Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev has taken us all by storm over the last two weeks, winning, and finishing two fights in just ten days, setting a UFC record. Now he wants to fight again at UFC 252 on August 15, and UFC President Dana White isn’t opposed to it, he’s already his biggest fan.

White caught up with Brett Okamoto yesterday on ESPN MMA to discuss his thoughts on Chimaev. Okamoto asked White after it was all said and done who had the standout performance at UFC Fight Island. White immediately responded:

“Khamzat! I mean, the guy is so dominant, so confident, (he) wants to continue to fight every weekend. I love it, I love guys with that mentality. I love how talented this guy is. You know, we threw the hottest prospect out of the UK at him, and that kid is a badass, legit, great fighter. And he made it look like he didn’t belong there.”

Okamoto then asked him if he had any interactions himself with Chimaev on Fight Island:

“Yeah yeah, I mean, he said he wanted to fight, and I said done. I’ll make it happen. He wants to fight now again in August, and I’m gonna get him what he wants.” Okamoto then asked him if he was going to get him a fight in August, White replied, “hell yes I am.”

White went on to speak on what could be next for Chimaev:

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out. We were sitting in here this morning trying to figure out what we think is next. You know, you ask this kid, he’s ready to fight Usman, you know what I mean?” Okamoto added, “I’m kind of ready to see it”, White continued, “is he ready for Usman? The way he looks, who knows, maybe.

In his two UFC fights, Chimaev has out-landed his opponents 192-2, and scored three takedowns, one for each round he started. He wants to be champion of the welterweight and middleweight divisions as well, and thinks it’ll take one or two years to challenge for his first one. There have been many comparisons between himself and UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, and honestly, he’s more dominant at 8-0 than Nurmagomedov was at 20-0. Forget the sky, there really is no limit for this kids potential.

What do you think should be next for Khamzat Chimaev?

Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev is the UFC’s newest big star, as he’s gone 2-0 in just ten days since making his debut back at UFC Fight Island I. He absolutely mauled John Phillips in his promotional debut, out-striking his 124-2 in total strikes, and securing the D’Arce choke finish in round two. Ten days later, at UFC Fight Island III, he went down to his natural weight class of 170 lbs and TKO’d Rhys McKee in round one, out-striking him 68-0 in total strikes. Chimaev’s one of the most dominant fighters in the entire sport already, and he’s only 8-0 as a professional.

Following his win over McKee, at the post-fight press conference, he was asked if Donald Cerrone was still a fight he wanted. He has the following to say on this matchup:

“Yeah (he has a) good name, but I know this guy’s not (on my) level. I’m going to smash him for one (or) two rounds. I’m gonna beat him easy, easy money for me, but he have good name, I’m only two fights in the UFC.”

Conor McGregor also took to social media following Chimaev’s win over McKee, the picture is a snapshot from Chimaev’s phone. McGregor later deleted the post:

Chimaev responded to ‘The Notorious’ with this statement:

Dillon Danis also took to social media to say something about Chimaev, though he’s in Bellator. Too bad the UFC won’t do cross promotion fights, because this would be very interesting to see. Danis might only be 2-0 at this point in his career, but he’s one of the best grapplers in the sport, as Chimaev also appears to be, and they only have a combined total of ten fights.

Chimaev also called out Demain Maia following his win on Saturday, stating that he respects him and sees him as a legend, stating ‘sorry, you’re next…. let’s see who have better grappling…’. Maia is one fight away from retirement, but this would be an interesting match up. Anybody versus Chimaev right now is an interesting match up, he’s so dominant and dangerous already. He stated he wants to become a two-weight world champion, welterweight and middleweight, and he thinks he’ll be fighting for the title in one or two years.

He also said he’d like to compete again at UFC 252 on August 15, and Dana White said he’d make it happen. How crazy would that be, to go from 6-0 to 9-0 in exactly, to the day, one months time? Making his UFC debut and going 3-0 inside of a month would be insane, he already broke a record for two fights, and two wins in ten days. Hopefully, they can make it happen and we get to see him again, he’s incredibly entertaining to watch. He really is just like a lankier version of UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Khamzat Chimaev has talked about the fact many are comparing him to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov after just two fights inside MMA’s premier promotion.

Chimaev defeated John Phillips at middleweight in his UFC debut before taking on Rhys McKee at welterweight just 10 days’ later – making company history in the process.

In the UFC Fight Island 3 post-fight press conference Chimaev spoke confidently about how easy he finds fighting despite stepping up his level of competition, he said.

“Of course it easy for me. I born from this country when I was kid, it was war in my country. Everyone know Chechnya, like before how they was. I like to fight in the cage, and smash someone, it’s too easy. Too easy. Smash someone. Get money, brother. It’s perfect for me.

Chimaev commented on people comparing him to Nurmagomedov by saying he will soon replace the undefeated champion as the pound-for-pound number one.

“I like this guy, this guy is, I think I don’t know, pound for pound number one?” Chimaev said. “Yeah, I think he’s pound for pound number one. He’s 28 wins? Yeah. But soon … I’m going to be pound for pound number one. I’m gonna be champion. I have eight fights, eight finishes. I destroyed everybody. I’m going to do this. Next fight also.”

The 26-year-old is in no rush to claim UFC gold but feels like it is in an evitable part of his future which he predicts will happen sooner rather than later,  he said.

“For me it doesn’t matter. I don’t know, but I want to take this belt in one, two years? As soon as possible I’m going to take this. I know it’s not like movie, like Rocky Balboa. Like he want to fight and get the title shot. I’m going to take this soon.”

Once he does become champion Chimaev hopes to use his position and the money obtained through it for good.

“To help somebody,” he said. “I do this not only for me. I do this for everybody I can help. I don’t want to be like Mayweather, like McGregor, be one of the guys to show my money, show my cars like something like that. I want to help the people.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)
