Dana White revealed that Khamzat Chimaev will fight at middleweight upon his return to the Octagon.

Khamzat Chimaev quickly rose through the rankings of the promotion’s 170-pound division, scoring four straight finishes in the UFC before earning the biggest win of his career against one-time UFC title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. It appeared that ‘Borz’ was on his way to a welterweight title opportunity, but a weigh-in snafu at UFC 279 quickly changed that.

Scheduled for a main event clash with Nate Diaz, Khamzat Chimaev stepped onto the scale eight pounds over the limit for their welterweight contest. As a result, the promotion was forced to scramble at the last minute, shuffling around the card in order to save an event that was already being criticized for its underwhelming lineup. With Chimaev’s continuous struggle to make the 170-pound limit, speculation immediately began as to what division the Chechen monster would fight in going forward.

Speaking to the media ahead of UFC 286 on Saturday, Dana White was asked which division Chimaev will compete in for his return later this year.

“Yeah, he’ll fight at middleweight,” White confirmed. “He’s in a position where he should be fighting the top three guys in the world.”

Khamzat Chimaev’s Next Opponent Could Be Robert Whittaker or Winner of Pereira vs. Adesanya II

Currently, the top contenders in the middleweight division include former champion Israel Adesanya, former titleholder Robert Whittaker, and No. 3 ranked Jared Cannonier. Sitting on the 185-pound throne at the moment is Alex Pereira following his shocking fifth-round knockout of ‘The Last Stylebender’ at UFC 281.

Pereira and Adesanya will run back their November clash next month with both Khamzat Chimaev and Robert Whittaker in prime position for an opportunity to face the winner. ‘Borz’ has been previously tied to a potential title eliminator with ‘The Reaper’ but no official announcement has been made. Chimaev is currently focused on his religion during Ramadan which runs from March 22 through April 21. Once completed, Chimaev is expected to settle on a date and an opponent for his highly anticipated return.

Khamzat Chimaev take title from clowns Leon Edwards Kamaru Usman UFC 286

Khamzat Chimaev has his sights set on the winner between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman this weekend.

On Saturday night, Edwards will defend his UFC welterweight championship for the first time since capturing the title in what many have called the greatest comeback in UFC history last August. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ heads into enemy territory in an attempt to reclaim the crown, but both men may have a much bigger problem awaiting them once their battle at the O2 Arena is in the books.

Undefeated welterweight (and sometimes middleweight) contender Khamzat Chimaev plans on making a run at the emerging 170-pound champion. ‘Borz’ made that abundantly clear on Instagram while responding to a post authored by the UFC hyping Saturday’s main event.

“Soon I’ll take my belt from this two clowns,” Chimaev said in his response.

Khamzat Chimaev Rise Up the Rankings and His UFC 279 Debacle.

12-0 in his mixed martial arts career, Khamzat Chimaev quickly rose near the top of the UFC’s welterweight rankings with a win over one-time title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. Five months later ‘Borz’ was scheduled for a main event showdown with Nate Diaz at UFC 279. Chimaev stepped on the scale eight pounds over the limit, narrowly causing the entire card to be canceled. Fortunately, the promotion was able to shuffle things around, moving Chimaev into a co-main event slot against fan-favorite Kevin Holland at middleweight.

Chimaev made quick work of Holland, but fans quickly turned on ‘Borz’ due to his completely unapologetic response toward missing weight and forcing the promotion to scramble at the last minute while depriving fans of the previously promised main event.

In the aftermath, it appeared that Chimaev would be forced into a permanent move to 185 pounds, but UFC president Dana White later revealed that ‘Borz’ wanted to stay at 170 and he would get one more chance to do so. If things go Chimaev’s way, that chance could very well come against the winner of Saturday’s headliner in London.

Ahead of an rumored middleweight move for undefeated uber-prospect, Khamzat Chimaev, the AllStars MMA staple has opened as neither a betting favorite nor underdog against former UFC champion, Robert Whittaker – with markets currently offering pick ‘em money on both.

Boasting an undefeated 12-0 professional record, former Brave CF contender, Chimaev most recently co-headlined UFC 279 back in September of last year against Kevin Holland – securing his sixth Octagon victory with a dominant, opening round D’Arce choke victory.

Chimaev was initially scheduled to headline the pay-per-view event against former lightweight title challenger, Nate Diaz in his first flagship event main event feature for the organization, however, the matchup was shelved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, after Chimaev missed weight by a staggering seven and a half pounds.

As for Whittaker, the former undisputed middleweight champion has successfully rebounded from his championship rematch loss with former gold holder, Israel Adesanya back in February of last year – retaining his top-contender status with an eye-catching decision win over Marvin Vettori at UFC Fight Night Paris in September of last year to boot.

Suffering losses to just Adesanya in his last 15 walks, Whittaker has amassed a 13-2 record combined since June 2014.

Winning an interim title back in 2017 against Yoel Romero, Whittaker was then promoted to undisputed champion status following the retirement of Georges St-Pierre, before rematching Romero and retaining his title in a close, decision victory.

Beyond his losses to City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya in the last nine years, Whittaker has landed other notable triumphs over Derek Brunson, Ronaldo Souza, Darren Till, Jared Cannonier, Kelvin Gastelum, and the aforenoted, Vettori.

Linked with an welcoming a fight with the undefeated Chimaev later this year as the duo eye Octagon returns, Whittaker and the former have both opened at -110 in many markets – with little to nothing separating the two at the time of publication. Bovada bonus promo can likely help separate the duo with method of victory offers and outright winners odds.

Briefly expected to feature on home soil at UFC 284 last month, Whittaker saw a planned fight with Belo Horizonte native and one-time middleweight title challenger, Paulo Costa fall to the wayside as the Brazilian continues to run into contract disputes with the Dana White-led organization.

Touted as a future title challenger at both the middleweight and welterweight limits, Chimaev has landed other stunning Octagon triumphs over John Philips, Rhys McKee, Gerald Meerschaert, and Li Jingliang – before he was forced the distance against Gilbert Burns in a winning-effort at UFC 273 in April of last year.

For his exploits at the welterweight limit, Chimaev currently sits as the #3 ranked contender, behind just former interim champion, Colby Covington, and former undisputed best – incoming UFC 286 headliner, Kamaru Usman.

Losing his number one perch at the middleweight limit following Adesanya’s title loss to Alex Pereira at UFC 281 back in November of last year, Whittaker still sits at #2 at 185lbs.

Bo Nickal sees himself competing against Khamzat Chimaev in the ‘biggest fight in UFC history’

Bo Nickal

In his mind, Bo Nickal had made the walk to the Octagon many times before.

This Saturday night, the three-time NCAA Division I national champion will do it for real when he makes his official debut as part of a stacked lineup at UFC 285. Welcoming him to combat sports’ grandest stage will be Jamie Pickett, a 13-8 fighter with eight of those victories coming by way of knockout.

Ahead of his highly anticipated debut, Bo Nickal addressed the media to answer questions about his mindset going into his big debut at the T-Mobile Arena and how he plans to handle the pressure of the moment through visualization.

“I think the important thing about visualization is making it really real, making it a really visceral experience,” Nickal told reporters during a pre-fight news conference. “I think there’s technique that goes into visualization, just like there’s technique that goes into fighting. For me, it’s making the experience as real as possible, imagining not only what I’ll see but what it’s going to sound like, what it’s going to smell like, what the concrete is going to feel like underneath my feet, what the cage is going to feel like under my feet, and just making it as real as possible for me.

“So when I go in there for the first time, it really won’t be the first time because I’ve imagined it so many times in my mind. That’s just a very powerful practice” (h/t MMA Junkie).

Bo Nickal Envisions Himself Competing in the Biggest Fight in UFC History

One vision that Bo Nickal hopes to make a reality is a fight with undefeated Chechen monster Khamzat Chimaev. Nickal envisions the “inevitable” showdown taking place in Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium with a packed crowd of 100,000 people there to see what he believes will be the biggest fight in UFC history.

“(Khamzat Chimaev) is probably the biggest, most hyped guy coming up right now that hasn’t won a belt yet. I think eventually, us clashing is inevitable. That’s something that I visualize in my training and when I’m in a hard workout, getting my last bike sprint in, getting my last rep in, in the weight room, I’m visualizing that.

“Whether that fight comes in a year, or three years, or five years, or whatever it is, I’ll be ready. I do a lot of visualization and I see that fight happening as a main event in Raiders’ Stadium in front of 100,0000 people. I think it would be the biggest fight in UFC history. Only time will tell whether or not we get that, but I’m doing everything in my power to make that happen.”

After dispatching Zack Borrego and Donovan Beard in back-to-back fights on Dana White‘s Contender Series, Bo Nickal expressed his desire to compete against Chimaev during an appearance on Michael Bisping’s Believe You Me podcast. Of course, Nickal has a long way to go before the UFC can justify giving him a crack at the No. 3 ranked welterweight contender. A decisive win on Saturday night would be the first step toward making that possibility a reality.
