Ahead of his undisputed middleweight title defense at UFC 293 this weekend, Israel Adesanya has already announced plans for a third Octagon walk later this year – weighing up a potential clash with undefeated phenom, Khamzat Chimaev to boot.

Adesanya, the current undisputed middleweight champion, is slated to return on Saturday night in Sydney, Australia – taking on surging division contender, Sean Strickland in an attempted title defense.

Reclaiming the divisional crown at UFC 287 back in April, Adesanya managed to secure his first combat sports career win over common-foe, Alex Pereira, defeating the Brazilian with a thunderous one-punch KO victory in the second round in Miami, Florida.

Israel Adesanya flirts with fight against Khamzat Chimaev in the future

Announcing plans for a potential third outing this year ahead of his second walk this weekend at UFC 293, Adesanya has warned Chimaev about the ability of former foe, Paulo Costa ahead of his own respective return in October – however, expects him to eventually prevail with a win.

“I don’t know who’s going to win but I think if I’m favoring, I might be favoring Khamzat (Chimaev) a little bit more,” Israel Adesanya told MMA Fighting during a recent interview. “Because I like new blood.”

“I just made Paulo (Costa) look easy but trust me, he’s a hard fight,” Israel Adesanya explained. “He’s a hard fight but I made him look easy. But I think I’m rooting for Khamzat more in that fight.”

Slated to make his comeback fight at UFC 294 in October, Chimaev has been sidelined since he submitted Kevin Holland with a one-sided first round D’Arce choke submission win over the Californian striker in the co-main event of UFC 279 in September of last year.

Drawing Costa in his comeback to the Octagon, Chimaev has weighed up the pursuit of a middleweight title fight with Adesanya in the past, and is expected to land in and around championship contention with a successful outing against Brazilian rival, Costa in an October return.

Rhys McKee calls for Khamzat Chimaev rematch after UFC Paris

Seeing his initial Octagon tenure come to a close following a one-sided loss to Khamzat Chimaev and a close judging defeat to Alex Morono back in 2020, former Cage Warriors welterweight champion, Rhys McKee has claimed fans will be chomping at the bit for him to rematch the undefeated Chimaev following his return at UFC Paris today.

Ballymena native, McKee, a former undisputed Cage Warriors welterweight champion, makes his Octagon return today on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night Paris at the Accor Arena, attempting to right wrongs set prior in 2020, taking on Ange Loosa in a welterweight pairing as he kicks off his second stint under the Dana White-led banner.

Featuring against the above-mentioned Chechen finisher, Chimaev on short-notice on ‘Fight Island’ back in 2020, McKee was stopped a slew of opening round ground strikes by the AllStars MMA staple, before returning later that year in a close decision loss to Morono.

Landing three victories including a Cage Warriors title triumph in the time since, McKee, who turned in consecutive stoppages of Aleksi Mantykivi, Justin Burlinson, and UFC alum, Jim Wallhead since his UFC departure, claims fans will clamour for him to fight Chimaev in the future off the back of viewing his return to the Octagon in France.

Rhys McKee claims fans will clamour for him to rematch Khamzat Chimaev

“Obviously, when I fought Khamzat (Chimaev), I travelled half way across the world on six days’ notice, with no training, to fight a man,” Rhys McKee told TalkSPORT reporter, Jordan Ellis. “That alone shows I’ve got a big set of stones.”

“The next time, I fought (Alex) Morono who had over ten fights in the UFC,” Rhys McKee explained. “That was my last fight, that was over three years ago and he’s still in the UFC. This is a nice one back [against Ange Loosa], but don’t get me wrong, I’m going to come for these names again. I’m going to make enough noise – have enough clean performances here that people are going to be wanting me to fight Morono again and fight Khamzat again.”

Khamzat Chimaev to struggle with Paulo Costa at UFC 294 long night for him

Undefeated finisher, Khamzat Chimaev has been tipped to struggle with the striking ability of Paulo Costa per a former opponent of his, Gilbert Burns – who claims their UFC 294 clash will ultimately be decided when both men exhibit their skills in the clinch.

Chimaev, who boasts an undefeated 12-0 professional record, is slated to return to the Octagon at UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE – making a return to the middleweight limit for the first time since his promotional bow to boot.

As for Costa, the Belo Horizonte native will feature for the first time since August of last year in his return against Khamzat Chimaev, having most recently snapped a two-fight losing skid in a close unanimous decision win over former champion, Luke Rockhold in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Khamzat Chimaev warned of Paulo Costa’s striking ability ahead of UFC 294

Breaking down Chimaev’s middleweight ranks return against Costa later this year in the MIddle East, Burns, a former foe or the Chechen, claims his Brazilian counterpart could profit hugely if he manages to defend relentless takedown attempts from Chimaev.

“That is a good one,” Gilbert Burns said of the bout during an appearance at a Q&A event at UFC Singapore. “I’m even going to make a big breakdown of that on my YouTube channel, but it’s a very close fight. I think it’s going to be decided in the clinch.”

“I think Khamzat will come with a lot of pressure, [and] try to take Costa down,” Burns explained. “If he’s able, it’s going to be a big problem for Costa. But if Costa defends and can get away and use the striking, it’s going to be a long night for Khamzat. I think it’s a very close fight and it will be decided in the clinch. If Khamzat can take him down, Khamzat wins. But if Costa can defend it and use the striking, then Costa wins – very close fight.”

In terms of sought-after opponents for a return to the Emerald Isle for the Portmarnock native, Machado Garry has made no bones about his intention of standing opposite the above-mentioned, Chimaev in the near future.

“It would have to be in the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland as my dream venue because they’re [the UFC] never going to go to Croke Park,” Ian Machado Garry told Sporting Post during a recent interview. “And the gream opponent would be me versus Khamzat Chimaev, because everyone talks about him like he’s this badman and this boogeyman, but in the time I’m going to get a chance to lay hands on him – if he’s the baddest man that everyone is afraid of, I’m going to show the world what’s up.”

“He’d be my dream opponent in Ireland,” Ian Machado Garry explained. “I want that f*cking wofl. I want that badman. I want to be baddest man on earth, and everyone considers it to be him at the moment, but let me punch the mouth off him and we’ll see what’s up.”

Khamzat

Khamzat Chimaev will return to the Octagon this October after more than a year on the shelf.

‘Borz’ took the UFC by storm in 2020, scoring three wins in the span of eight weeks. Since then, he has added three more impressive victories, dispatching Li Jingliang, Gilbert Burns, and Kevin Holland. On October 21, Chimaev will look to score his 13th career win and a potential middleweight title opportunity as he faces his toughest test to date in one-time UFC title challenger Paulo Costa.

‘The Eraser’ will be making his first appearance since claiming a win over former middleweight champ Luke Rockhold at UFC 278.

Ahead of his highly anticipated return, Khamzat Chimaev was spotted putting in some work with doppelganger and fellow undefeated pro fighter, Khamzat Maaev. An image of the pair working together in the gym comes courtesy of BRAVE CF on X (formerly Twitter), the promotion that Maaev currently calls home.

Khamzat Maaev Kicks Off His Career with Four-Straight First-Round Finishes

Khamzat Maaev, like his UFC counterpart, is undefeated in mixed martial arts, boasting a 4-0 record with three knockouts and one win by way of a guillotine choke. All of his victories have come in the opening round. Maaev’s promotional debut at BRAVE CF 71 was a smashing success as the Chechen prospect walked through his opponent, Elie Farah, in just 41 seconds.

Maaev also competes in the welterweight division where Chimaev has spent most of his UFC career. Not only that, but the pair actually share the ‘Borz’ moniker.

Could we someday see a clash of Khamzats inside the Octagon?
