Khamzat Chimaev made waves on Twitter when he revealed that he had accepted a short-notice fight with newly crowned UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira.

With Pereira fresh off his shocking fifth-round knockout of Israel Adesanya at UFC 281, it seemed highly unlikely that he would be ready to go on such short notice, making a quick turnaround to compete at UFC 282 on December 10th. Especially against an opponent as formidable as Khamzat Chimaev. However, the recent revelation that Jiri Prochazka is out of the previously scheduled UFC 282 main event led some to speculate the UFC was attempting to make a massive middleweight title fight between the two behemoths in place of the light heavyweight title rematch.

UFC fan favorite Sean O’Malley shared his thoughts on the hypothetical pairing through his YouTube channel. The No. 1 ranked bantamweight contender is confidently backing Khamzat Chimaev, believing his grappling and power would be enough to take out Alex Pereira.

“Khamzat could f**k Alex up… That left hand is nasty, but if I had to put money on Alex vs. Khamzat I’d put it on Khamzat… He can grapple big scary guys like that. I’d put money on Khamzat if they fought… His grappling is good, and he can knock motherf***ers out,” O’Malley said.

Khamzat Chimaev vs. Alex Pereira Unlikely as the UFC Promotes Blachowicz vs. Ankalaev to Main Event

Fans immediately began salivating over the potential of a surprise showdown between Khamzat Chimaev and Alex Pereira, though the bout seems unlikely to happen anytime soon, if ever. The UFC may have looked into the possibility as a knee-jerk reaction to Jiri Prochazka’s withdrawal from the event but with the event roughly two weeks out, it seems that the promotion has moved onto another plan.

Following the announcement that Prochazka had withdrawn and vacated his UFC light heavyweight championship, the promotion promoted Jan Blachowicz vs. Magomed Ankalaev to the main event slot. The two will now compete for the vacant 205-pound title.

As for Sean O’Malley, the outspoken striker is coming off the biggest win of his career, scoring a split-decision victory over Petr Yan. The victory extended his win streak to four and improved his overall UFC record to 8-1. Now sitting at No. 1 in the bantamweight rankings, O’Malley is eyeing a fight with the returning ‘Triple C’ Henry Cejudo or a title opportunity against reigning division champion, Aljamain Sterling.

Undefeated UFC welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has questioned reigning heavyweight division champion, Francis Ngannou’s high-profile issue with fighter pay and compensation issued by the organization, defending UFC president, Dana White over the publicized issue.

Last featuring in the co-main event of UFC 279 back in September, Chimaev managed to improve 12-0 as a professional, submitting incoming UFC Orlando main event feature, Kevin Holland with a first round D’Arce choke at the T-Mobile Arena

As for Ngannou, the Cameroon native headlined UFC 270 back at the beginning of this year, unifying the division titles with a unanimous decision win against interim titleholder, Ciryl Gane over the course of five rounds.

Off the back of his victor, Ngannou’s victory, the Batie native’s contact with the organization came to an end, however, he is still subject to a champion’s clause, which would see him tied to the promotion for the period of a year.

Voicing his displeasure with fighter pay under the UFC umbrella, Ngannou’s dispute with the organization has been the target of Chimaev, who questioned his gripe with his contract.

“If Dana (White) calls me, ‘Let’s do these things,’ I do it,” Khamzat Chimaev told ESPN MMA during a recent interview. “I appreciate it, what Dana and UFC did for me, you know? A lot of guys talking about ‘UFC don’t us good money’ and those things. Go back, and where they’ve been one, two, three years ago? They don’t remember that, you know? I was homeless almost, you know? Lot of guys as well.”

“And big guy, what his name? [Francis] Ngannou, he’s talking about don’t give him good money and all these things,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “And he was speaking about living outside before. Why don’t he do it right now? He has to appreciate everything that’s happened with him. He has to fight, fight, the money coming.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Yet to be booked for his next Octagon appearance akin to Ngannou, Chimaev has been linked with what would come as a potential welterweight title-eliminator against former interim champion, Colby Covington next year in a United Kingdom return to the promotion.

Surging unbeaten UFC welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev certainly fancies his own chances against recently minted undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira – claiming he’s already agreed to fight the Brazilian in just over two weeks’ time at UFC 282 this month.

Chimaev, who currently boasts an undefeated 12-0 professional record, co-headlined UFC 279 most recently back in September of this year, stopping incoming UFC Orlando headliner, Kevin Holland with a quickfire opening round D’Arce choke.

The AllStars MMA staple was slated to headline the event against the exiting, Nate Diaz, however, Khamzat Chimaev would miss weight by a whopping seven and a half pounds for the UFC 279 main event, resulting in the bout’s shelving by the organization.

For Pereira, the Sao Paulo striking phenom managed to mint himself as the undisputed middleweight champion earlier this month at UFC 281 in New York City – stopping then-champion, Israel Adesanya with a fifth round standing TKO victory.

Appearing ready to take on all comers at both welterweight and middleweight in his pursuit of Octagon gold, the undefeated, Chimaev has offered to fight Pereira at the promotion’s final flagship pay-per-view event later this month.

“@AlexPereiraUFC 10 December let’s go, I already agreed,” Khamzat Chimaev tweeted. “Now it’s your turn (crossed sword emoji).”

While Chimaev has welcomed the opportunity to fight Pereira later this month, it appears the Brazilian is all but penned to fight the aforenoted, Adesanya in an immediate championship rematch next year – in what will come as his fifth Octagon outing.

UFC president, Dana White, also recently claimed that the organization were exploring the possibility of booking a welterweight fight between Chimaev, and former interim division champion, Colby Covington – potentially at an event in the United Kingdom in the opening quarter of next year.
