UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson has predicted Colby Covington will defeat rising star Khamzat Chimaev.

The UFC are expected to book a 170lb clash between former interim champion, Covington, and No.3 ranked Chimaev.

Chimaev’s six-fight run in the UFC has been sensational, only ever facing adversity when taking on Gilbert Burns, who at the time was ranked No.2, in a bout he would ultimately win. The Chechen’s strong wrestling, submission game and punching power has garnered him a fearsome reputation, but one half of this week’s main event, Stephen Thompson, backs Covington to get the victory.

Talking to Submission Radio, Thompson feels that Chimaev’s weight issues could play a role in how the fight plays out.

I’m not really sure if that will happen,” Thompson began “I don’t think Colby wants it, obviously, and especially against a guy that hasn’t made weight. So, I don’t blame him.

If it does happen, I think if it goes five-five, I think Colby’s got it if it goes in the later rounds. Just because he’s got cardio for days. And we saw the fight with Chimaev and Gilbert Burns, and Chimaev started to fatigue. And I don’t know if that’s because he did make weight, right? And he was depleted? Cause he killed himself to get down to 170. Will he be able to do it again? I don’t know.

If he doesn’t make weight, I wouldn’t fight him,” Thompson continued. “I would say no. But if it does [happen], if Chimaev wins, it’s gonna have to be early on in the rounds. But if it goes all five, definitely Colby. He’s got cardio for days, and Chimaev is just a big 170-er man. He shouldn’t even be a 170, he should be up at 185.” (H/T MMA Mania)

Thompson will take on Kevin Holland in the main event of UFC Fight Night Orlando this Saturday night. ‘Wonderboy’ will hope to get back into the win column in what will be a far more stylistically favorable matchup, after facing two strong wrestlers his last two times out.

Alex Pereira

Recently minted undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Alex Pereira has offered to share the Octagon with undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzar Chimaev – at the light heavyweight limit, in a return to his native Brazi to boot.

Taking main event status at UFC 281 earlier this month at Madison Square Garden, Pereira managed to clinch the undisputed middleweight championship – stopping arch-rival, Israel Adesanya with a rallying fith round standing TKO victory.

Off the back of the victory, Pereira was linked with a future title fight against the undefeated, Chimaev, with the Chechen-born contender offering to make a stunning quickfire turnaround and fight the Sao Paulo native at UFC 282 later this month in ‘Sin City’.

Khamzat Chimaev has been offered a light heavyweight clash by Alex Pereira

Offering to make a fight with Chimaev a reality should the AllStars MMA staple remain keen on a matchup, Pereira, a former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing champion, has offered to make a light heavyweight return in a Brazil homecoming against Chimaev at UFC 283 in January.

“Okay, number one, he (Alex Pereira) said he’ll fight (Khamzat) Chimaev in Rio at light heavyweight, right,” Alex Pereira told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour through an interpreter. “Not a problem for him – number two, I think Brendan Schaub was running his mouth, you know, I don’t even wanna translate.”

“So, here’s the deal, he’ll fight Chimaev in Rio at 205 (pounds), and he proposes to do a bet with Schaub.” Alex Pereira said. “$50,000 if he beats Chimaev. If we both go, and those 50k from both sides, we donate to kids in aid. Also, 50 more ($50,000) that he (Chimaev) will not take him down in 30 seconds, to donate to the charity too.”

Despite urging Adesanya to think about some time off following his knockout defeat in New York City earlier this month, Pereira insists if the City Kickboxing trainee wants to fight him next, he will oblige in an immediate title re-run.

Khamzat Chimaev burst into the UFC leveling three straight opponents in two months’ time. After walking through John Phillips, Rhys McKee, and Gerald Meerschaert, nobody wanted a piece of Chimaev, except for one man; Neil Magny.

Openly lobbying for a crack at the UFC’s new welterweight monster, the two fighters were rumored to square off on more than one occasion, but an especially bad bout with COVID-19 kept Chimaev on the shelf for more than a year. Khamzat Chimaev has since returned, scoring three more impressive wins inside the Octagon, but the career trajectory of both men has gone in opposite directions making a fight between the two unlikely anytime soon.

Khamzat Chimaev and Neil Magny Spar Together in New York

However, a recent video posted on YouTube revealed that the two fighters had in fact met on the mat. Both fighters were putting in work at Renzo Gracie’s New York facility where the video footage was captured. Just over the 4-minute mark of the clip, Magny and Chimaev can be clearly seen grappling with one another.

‘Borz’ appears to lock in a mounted triangle before they reset and continue. Of course, this was nothing more than a light sparring session, but it could give fans an idea of how things might have gone had the two met inside the Octagon. At the very least, it’s an interesting behind-the-scenes glimpse at two of the best 170-pounders in the world.
