Khamzat Chimaev plans to break Bo Nickal in future UFC title fight

‘Borz’ Khamzat Chimaev is impressed with the skills of up-and-coming Bo Nickal. However, the Swedish fighter still committed to defeating him anytime.

Chimaev has bounced between the welterweight and middleweight divisions in the UFC. Thus far in MMA, he is unbeaten with impressive with over Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland, and Li Jingliang among others. His most recent bout was supposed to be a welterweight match against Nate Diaz however a large weight miss forced him into a catchweight fight against Holland.

Bo Nickal recently made his UFC debut in the middleweight division. The American fighter is a hot prospect given his collegiate wrestling background. Nickal is merely 4-0 in professional MMA but is a three-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion. During the Olympic qualifying trials, he would lose his spot against gold medalist David Taylor.

Khamzat Chimaev on Bo Nickal

While speaking in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, the unbeaten Khamzat Chimaev commented:

“I’ve seen his wrestling, he’s a good fighter. Maybe we’ll fight for a title one day. It’s too early to fight me, though … if they put him against me now, I’m gonna break him… He has to be stupid if he thinks like that.” [Transcript courtesy of MMA News]

Nickal and Khamzat may meet in the future but for now, they are a little ways apart. Bo Nickal has only recently made his UFC debut and is unranked in the top 15. Meanwhile, Chimaev is likely to be facing a top-three opponent very soon.

Khamzat Chimaev claims Alex Pereira easiest fight for him in the UFC

Undefeated UFC welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has claimed that undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, turned down a fight with him before inking terms to rematch former titleholder, Israel Adesanya at UFC 287 next month in Miami, Florida.

Chimaev, the current #3 ranked welterweight contender, has yet to return to active competition since September of last year, co-headlining UFC 279 against Californian striker, Kevin Holland in a reworked catchweight fight.

Initially scheduled to headline the pay-per-view event against Nate Diaz in a welterweight matchup, Chimaev submitted Holland with a first round D’Arce choke win, having missed weight by seven-and-a-half pounds for his slated bout with Diaz.

Expected to make a middleweight division return for the first time since his UFC debut back in 2020, Chimaev has been touted to fight contenders within the division’s top-3 by UFC leader, Dana White

Claiming he had signed bout agreements to fight former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington – as well as former middleweight kingpin, Robert Whittaker since his win over Holland, Chimaev also claimed middleweight kingpin, Pereira rejected a December turnaround to defend his title against him.

“I was told it [the fight was] for the belt,” Khamzat Chimaev said of a UFC 282 fight with Alex Pereira during an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “Then UFC say – I speak with Sean Shelby only about that fight [with Alex Pereira]. Sean Shelby says first, ‘Yes, brother – let’s try it.’ And then a day later he says, ‘No, brother, we’ll first fight Colby (Covington)’ And I said ok.”

“And then the guy [Pereira] said I said we should fight at 205 [pounds],” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “The UFC doesn’t want to see you fight [at light heavyweight yet], you only took the belt [at middleweight] and now you wanna go up and fight for a different weight class and no belt? I am 170 and he is 185 – we fight like 205? It makes sense? I don’t know. That’s why UFC maybe didn’t call me about that fight. I don’t know –  I was ready to fight in Brazil, at a different weight class, which weight class he wants. It’s the most easy (sic) fight for me in the UFC.”

Leon Edwards, Khamzat Chimaev

Leon Edwards, who successfully defended the UFC welterweight belt against Kamaru Usman at UFC 286, isn’t convinced that Khamzat Chimaev is deserving of a title shot.

With a second-straight win over Usman this past weekend, Edwards solidified himself as the true king of the 170-pound division.

Immediately after the fight, there were questions on who would be Edwards’ next opponent. There are multiple contenders in the welterweight division, including No. 3 ranked Khamzat Chimaev.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour, Edwards, who is the first Jamaican-born UFC champion, believes Chimaev hasn’t earned an opportunity at a title shot.

Khamzat [Chimaev] is a guy that I got matched up with three times in a row. I took the fight and he didn’t take the fight and then he’s getting rewarded..[when] I got removed out of the rankings,” Edwards said. “This Dana White privilege is definitely real.”

Chimaev has been outspoken about wanting to win UFC gold at welterweight. He labeled Edwards and Usman as “clowns” ahead of UFC 286.

He is unbeaten (12-0, 6-0 in UFC) in his career. His resume includes wins over Gilbert Burns, Kevin Holland and Li Jingliang to name a select few.

The Chechnya, native Russia hasn’t competed since his controversial weight-cut at UFC 279 last September. Originally scheduled to headline the pay-per-view against Nate Diaz, the 28-year-old missed the 170-pound limit by 7.5 pounds. He was then matched up against Holland, who he defeated by first-round submission.

Leon Edwards Has A Lot of Options in the 170-pound division

Edwards, 31, doesn’t believe there’s a clear-cut No. 1 contender in his division. Along with Chimaev, the Birmingham, England native has also dismissed a potential fight with Colby Covington, who UFC president Dana White said is next in line for a title shot.

“Rocky” will closely be watching UFC 287, where welterweights Jorge Masvidal and Burns are scheduled to co-headline the main card.

Khamzat Chimaev accepted 4 fights with Colby Covington UFC

Undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev has responded to criticizm from former interim division champion, Colby Covington, claiming his UFC rival rejected the opportunity to fight him on four separate occasions.

Chimaev, who boasts his own 12-0 undefeated record, most recently co-headlined UFC 279 back in September of last year, stopping Riverside striker, Kevin Holland in a first round submission courtesy of an early D’Arce choke.

As for Covington, the former interim titleholder most recently headlined UFC 272 back in March of last year in a long-awaited grudge match against former friend and teammate, Jorge Masvidal – handing the Florida native a one-sided unanimous decision loss.

Yet to return to the Octagon in the time since his judging win over Masvidal, Covington has been earmarked for a title shot against undisputed champion, Leon Edwards next by UFC president, Dana White – calling for a fight with the Birmingham native as early as UFC 280 during International Fight Week in July.

Questioned about a potential future pairing with undefeated Chechen ace, Chimaev in the future – Covington mocked his fighting ability, and labelled him a “dog-faced motherf*cker”.

“That dog-faced motherf*cker, c*mshot [Khamzat Chimaev] – he said all these things about me in the media,” Colby Covington said. “He had the easiest fight in the division against Nate Diaz and he still missed weight by nine [seven and a half] pounds.”

“He’s laughing it off like it’s a f*cking joke,” Colby Covington continued. “He’s a f*cking joke, the guys sucks at fighting he’s unprofessional.”

Khamzat Chimaev appears to call UFC rival, Colby Covington’s bluff

Responding to Covington, Chimaev claimed he had accepted offers to settle their differences inside the UFC’s Octagon on four separate occasions, however, to no avail.

“Colby (Covington) is lying, he doesn’t want to fight,” Khamzat Chimaev said during a video on his YouTube channel. “I swear with everything I have – I swear with the Gods. I accepted that fight four times – all the Muslims understand, I swear on the Quaran. I get four times call (sic), we’re going to fight, I say ‘Yes’.”

“I have a conversation with [UFC matchmaker] Sean Shelby – I can show it as well,” Khamzat Chimaev explained. “We’re going to fight this guy (Covington). We’re going to fight with this guy, but it’s never happened.”
