Former interim UFC welterweight titleholder, Colby Covington has unleashed an expletive-filled tirade against undefeated division contender, Khamzat Chimaev – labelling the Chechen a “dog-faced motherf*cker” – and mocking his fighting ability.

Covington, who attended UFC 286 last night at The O2 Arena – flew out to London earlier this week, serving as an official backup fighter to the event’s headliner between welterweight champion, Leon Edwards, and former titleholder and past two-time opponent, Kamaru Usman.

Yet to return to the Octagon since March of last year, Clovis native, Covington headlined UFC 272 most recently – defeating former title challenger and arch-rival, Jorge Masvidal in a one-sided, unanimous decision win at the T-Mobile Arena.

As for Chimaev, the AllStars MMA staple improved to 12-0 as a professional back in September of last year at UFC 279 – taking home a first round D’Arce choke submission win over Kevin Holland in a reshuffled catchweight co-headliner.

Speaking of the welterweight contender’s exploits during his Octagon tenure during a media scrum at UFC 286 last night in England, Covington labelled Chimaev a “dogfaced motherf*cker”.

“That dog-faced motherf*cker, c*mshot [Khamzat Chimaev] – he said all these things about me in the media,” Colby Covington said. “He had the easiest fight in the division against Nate Diaz and he still missed weight by nine [seven and a half] pounds.”

Following the aforenoted, Edwards’ majority decision win over common-foe, Usman last night on home soil, UFC president Dana White confirmed that the Birmingham native would be making his second attempted title defense against Covington – with the latter calling for a July pairing with the UK standout during International Fight Week at UFC 290.

Khamzat Chimaev quickly rose through the rankings of the promotion’s 170-pound division, scoring four straight finishes in the UFC before earning the biggest win of his career against one-time UFC title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. It appeared that ‘Borz’ was on his way to a welterweight title opportunity, but a weigh-in snafu at UFC 279 quickly changed that.

Scheduled for a main event clash with Nate Diaz, Khamzat Chimaev stepped onto the scale eight pounds over the limit for their welterweight contest. As a result, the promotion was forced to scramble at the last minute, shuffling around the card in order to save an event that was already being criticized for its underwhelming lineup. With Chimaev’s continuous struggle to make the 170-pound limit, speculation immediately began as to what division the Chechen monster would fight in going forward.

Speaking to the media ahead of UFC 286 on Saturday, Dana White was asked which division Chimaev will compete in for his return later this year.

“Yeah, he’ll fight at middleweight,” White confirmed. “He’s in a position where he should be fighting the top three guys in the world.”

Khamzat Chimaev’s Next Opponent Could Be Robert Whittaker or Winner of Pereira vs. Adesanya II

Currently, the top contenders in the middleweight division include former champion Israel Adesanya, former titleholder Robert Whittaker, and No. 3 ranked Jared Cannonier. Sitting on the 185-pound throne at the moment is Alex Pereira following his shocking fifth-round knockout of ‘The Last Stylebender’ at UFC 281.

Khamzat Chimaev has his sights set on the winner between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman this weekend.

On Saturday night, Edwards will defend his UFC welterweight championship for the first time since capturing the title in what many have called the greatest comeback in UFC history last August. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ heads into enemy territory in an attempt to reclaim the crown, but both men may have a much bigger problem awaiting them once their battle at the O2 Arena is in the books.

Undefeated welterweight (and sometimes middleweight) contender Khamzat Chimaev plans on making a run at the emerging 170-pound champion. ‘Borz’ made that abundantly clear on Instagram while responding to a post authored by the UFC hyping Saturday’s main event.

“Soon I’ll take my belt from this two clowns,” Chimaev said in his response.

Khamzat Chimaev Rise Up the Rankings and His UFC 279 Debacle.

12-0 in his mixed martial arts career, Khamzat Chimaev quickly rose near the top of the UFC’s welterweight rankings with a win over one-time title challenger Gilbert Burns at UFC 273. Five months later ‘Borz’ was scheduled for a main event showdown with Nate Diaz at UFC 279. Chimaev stepped on the scale eight pounds over the limit, narrowly causing the entire card to be canceled. Fortunately, the promotion was able to shuffle things around, moving Chimaev into a co-main event slot against fan-favorite Kevin Holland at middleweight.

Chimaev made quick work of Holland, but fans quickly turned on ‘Borz’ due to his completely unapologetic response toward missing weight and forcing the promotion to scramble at the last minute while depriving fans of the previously promised main event.

In the aftermath, it appeared that Chimaev would be forced into a permanent move to 185 pounds, but UFC president Dana White later revealed that ‘Borz’ wanted to stay at 170 and he would get one more chance to do so.
