Bellator MMA heavyweight Kimbo Slice was admitted to Northwest Medical Center in Margate on June 3, complaining of severe abdominal pain, shortness of breath and nausea.

According to the medical report, Slice was found to have a liver mass and congestive heart failure and was placed on a ventilator in intensive care. Doctors advised his family that he would need a heart transplant. His family took the advice and on Monday, Doctors were preparing him for transfer to a facility in Cleveland, where he could be placed on an organ donor list. Unfortunately, Slice died at 7:30 pm that night.

Slice was supposed to fight James Thompson in the main event of Bellator 158, which takes place July 16 at London’s O2 Arena.

“This is like losing a brother,” ATT coach and co-founder Marcus “Conan,” Silveira told the Sun Sentinel.

“It was one of those oddities,” said ATT general manager Richie Guerrerio. “You see a guy doing these YouTube videos and you’re thinking, ‘Is he legit or not?’ People had their preconceived notions. He came in the gym with a humble attitude and was looking to learn. He wanted to become better and become a mixed martial artist. He was very much embraced. He was charismatic, and you were drawn to him.”

From all of us at Low Kick MMA, our thoughts and prayers are with the Slice family.

It would seem that Bellator officials approached Tito Ortiz about the former UFC light heavyweight champion stepping in and replacing Kimbo Slice at Bellator 158 next month.

Slice passed away Monday night, just about a month away from his planned bout with James Thompson in London, England. Previous reports have indicated that the event will remain on-schedule, airing live on Spike TV.

Ortiz last fought in September, losing to Bellator light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary. He has gone 2-1 overall with Bellator.

It’s been a hard year for combat sports fans, as just six months in we’ve seen a number of tragic deaths. Bellator MMA prospect Jordan Parsons died following a harrowing hit-and-run last month, former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman passed suddenly back in February, boxing legend Muhammad Ali left the earth this pas weekend and of course Kimbo Slice died unexpectedly just yesterday (Monday June 6, 2016).

The street fighting Youtube brawler rose from the streets to become the main attraction at Bellator, with stops in the UFC and pro boxing world along the way. He was taken ill from his home in Florida to the Fort Lauderdale hospital where doctors attempted to revive the fallen warrior. They were unsuccessful, and as a result the mixed martial arts world is once again, tragically, in mourning.

RIP-Kimbo-Slice[1]The passing of Kevin Ferguson (real name) at just 42 years of age has rocked our tight-knit community, thanks to BJPenn.com for the tribute image.

The exact circumstances surrounding Kimbo’s sudden death have not been fully revealed yet but a report on TMZ would indicate there is no suspicion of foul play:

we reached out to the Broward County Medical Examiner to find out if an autopsy would be performed.

We were told … “We were informed of his death and after review of the circumstances, we declined jurisdiction. It is not a medical examiner case.”

We asked if that meant the office believes his death is not suspicious and there’s no need for toxicology tests — to which the M.E. Chief told us, “No medical legal investigation, including toxicology is necessary.”

One of many performances in the cage, street, boxing ring and also on TV and the big screen that will make Kimbo one of the most fondly remembered fighters our era. Ask anyone who knew Kimbo Slice personally, they’ll tell you he was a kind and good hearted person who turned a tough upbringing in to a tale of success.
Once again, RIP Kimbo Slice.

The MMA world was turned upside down last night when news broke that Bellator heavyweight and fan favorite Kimbo Slice had tragically passed away at the age of 42 after being admitted to a hospital in his hometown of Coral Springs, Florida earlier that day.

The man officially named Kevin Ferguson who went by Kimbo Slice apparently passed away due to heart failure according to a report from The Orlando Sentinel, and it obviously left a big hole the size of Slice’s larger-than-life persona in the entire mixed martial arts community.

Not surprisingly, a large contingent of fighters, promoters, fan, teammates, and anyone mildly associated to MMA voiced their support for those close to Slice and their remembrances of what he had done for fighting, and the UFC, where Slice spent a part of his MMA career was a part of this emotional outpouring.

They released an official statement their website on his sad and untimely passing, noting that Slice had been nothing but a professional during his time on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10:

“UFC is saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Ferguson, known to fans around the world as Kimbo Slice.

Slice will forever be a part of UFC history as a contestant on season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2009, and for having fought twice inside the Octagon at The Ultimate Fighter Finale and UFC 113. He carried himself as a true professional during his time in our organization.

While he will never be forgotten for his fighting style and transcendent image, Slice will also be remembered for his warm personality and commitment to his family and friends.

UFC offers its sincere condolences to Slice’s family, friends and teammates at American Top Team.”

UFC President Dana White also voiced his support by posting a photo of Slice online:

After building up a controversial yet attention-grabbing reputation for his now-infamous YouTube backyard brawls some 10 years ago, Slice was a contestant on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) following a run in smaller MMA promotion EliteXC. Slice lost in the first round of the competition to eventual winner Roy Nelson, but rebounded to beat veteran Houston Alexander in the shows’ finale on December 5, 2009. Slice was eventually released after he lost to Matt Matrione by TKO in the second round of their bout the following May.

Most recently, Slice ha returned to MMA and gained fame and notoriety as the biggest draw in Bellator MMA, where his co-main event bout with fellow street fighter Dada 5000 drew a record number of viewers, it wasn’t without its question marks or controversy, however.

Regardless, none of that matters now, as the combat sports world will remember Slice as a polarizing, unique character who undoubtedly drew countless new viewers to the sport and left it all too soon.
