Paddy Pimblett: ‘Fickle’ MMA Fans Will Be Back On My Side After I Knock Bobby Green Out At UFC 304

Having seen a portion of the fanbase turn against him, UFC lightweight Paddy Pimblett expects to reverse that at the expense of Bobby Green.

Pimblett broke onto the scene in a big way following his UFC signing in 2021, winning his debut via knockout and subsequently recording two memorable submissions on home soil at London-held UFC Fight Nights in 2022.

But just as his following grew and rise to stardom accelerated, the tide appeared to turn when “The Baddy” made his pay-per-view debut opposite Jared Gordon in Las Vegas later that year.

While all three scorecards went in his favor, many cried robbery and began to dismiss the Liverpudlian as a legitimate threat to those high up the 155-pound ladder. And having suffered a foot injury, Pimblett had to wait a full year to answer his critics.

Last December at UFC 296, he remained unbeaten by getting the better of former interim champion Tony Ferguson. But having once again gone to a decision, and given the length of “El Cucuy’s” losing streak entering the bout, the result appeared to do little to stifle “The Baddy’s” detractors.

He’ll have another chance to do so at the upcoming UFC 304 pay-per-view event in Manchester, England, where Pimblett is set to share the Octagon with ranked opposition for the very first time.

And with a violent victory over Bobby “King” Green on July 27, the former Cage Warriors champ expects the “fickle” MMA fans to start backing him once again…

Pimblett: It’s ‘Popular’ To Hate On Me Right Now

During a recent interview with Ben Fowlkes for Yahoo! Sports, Pimblett looked ahead to his opening assignment of 2024 and first outing on home soil in two years.

When asked about some of the backlash he gets from the fans for topics ranging from in-cage performances to weight gain in-between his Octagon appearances, Pimblett suggested that it’s simply “popular” to speak negatively about him.

But with a dominant and emphatic display at the expense of Green at UFC 304, “The Baddy” expects his former supporters to return.

“Haters are gonna hate. I don’t give a f*ck what people on the Internet say, lad. I see people comment stuff all the time,” Pimblett said. “It’s a popular thing at the minute to hate on me. Ever since that Jared Gordon fight, it’s popular. Before that fight, I was the best thing since sliced bread. I was great, everyone loved me. Then I have a close decision that three judges decided I won — not me, I didn’t pick the winner — and everyone turns on you.

“That’s the thing in this sport, lad. MMA fans are so fickle. It’s one of them. I come out in this fight and knock Bobby Green, everyone will be back on side,” Pimblett added.

Pimblett will look to make good on his promise to finish Green inside the distance. More so than regaining fan support, that’s in order for “The Baddy” to debut in the lightweight rankings and begin his planned four-fight path to the title.

UFC 304's Paddy Pimblett claims Bobby Green changing his name proves that 'CTE is real'

Paddy Pimblett is convinced that King Green is suffering from CTE.

Recently, lightweight standout Bobby Green revealed that he had officially changed his first name to King weeks ahead of his return to the Octagon at UFC 304.

Paddy Pimblett vs. King Green

Meeting him in Manchester will be Paddy Pimblett, who had plenty to say about Green’s name change during a recent interview, suggesting that his lightweight rival may have taken a few too many shots to the dome.

“No, his name is Bobby, lad,” Pimblett told MMA Junkie. “He was born Bobby, he was Christened Bobby, his mom, and daddy call him Bobby. His name is Bobby. … The fact that he’s changed his name at nearly 40 years of age shows that CTE is real.”

‘The Baddy’ pointed to Green’s recent outings, specifically a brutal knockout loss against Jalin Turner that saw Green absorb a slew of unnecessary strikes.

Jalin Turner KOs King Green

“I do think it’s still affecting him because he got clipped with a few shots against Jim Miller [at UFC 300], who’s not a big puncher … I think he’s a little bit chinny now. Not even just the Jalin Turner one, he got knocked out clean by Drew Dober as well a couple of months before that.”

Paddy Pimblett says King Green is ‘stuck up his own a**’

Green has had plenty to say about Pimblett in the weeks leading up to their clash in the UK, going so far as to suggest that he’ll finish ‘The Baddy’ in a manner that will allow him to make a quick turnaround for a fight with Dan Hooker in Perth.

“He’s an arrogant c*nt,” Pimblett said. “He’s very arrogant. He’s stuck up his own a**. He thinks he’s better than he is. That’s the way I look at it.”

Pimplett goes into the bout with a spotless record inside the Octagon, scoring five-straight wins including a unanimous decision victory over former interim champion Tony Ferguson at UFC 296 in December.

Green, on the other hand, is carrying a far less exciting 13-10 record under the UFC banner, but heads into his next bout having won three of his last four, the most recent coming against Jim Miller at the promotion’s landmark event in April.

Perennial lightweight contender, Bobby Green has revealed he has officially changed his name to ‘King’ Green via an amendment to his brith certificate, following through on prior plans put in place earlier lastyear

Green, a fan-favorite lightweight staple under the banner of the promotion, returned to the winner’s enclosure at UFC 300 back in April, rebounding from a massive knockout loss to Jalin Turner.

Landing a unanimous decision shutout in the massive pay-per-view card, San Bernardino native, Green turned in a one-sided judging victory against fellow promotion veteran, Jim Miller over the course of three rounds.

And following his ‘No Contest’ fight with Jared Gordon back in April of last year, Green confirmed he would be changing his name legally to ‘King’ – claiming his former self had now retired.

Bobby Green changes name legally to ‘King’ Green

On social media tonight, Green, 37, confirmed he had legally changed his name to ‘King Green’ – and would be competing under that alias from now on whilst fighting under the banner of the UFC.

“My name is King now, just to let people know,” Bobby Green said on his official Instagram account. “I wasn’t playing. I really changed my name.”

A veteran fan-favorite contender, Green had landed an impressive three-fight unbeaten run before his knockout loss to Turner back in December of last year.

Taking out former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson with a fifth round arm-triangle submission win, Green then booked his sophomore main event bout under the promotional banner, turning in a shocking upset win over American Top Team mainstay, Grant Dawson – courtesy of a massive 33-second KO victory.

Overnight, Green attended the Honda Center in Anaheim, supporting his fellow California native, Nate Diaz en route to his majority decision win over fellow UFC veteran, Jorge Masvidal in their professional boxing rematch.

As always, the latest action on offer inside the Octagon has seen some climb the ladder toward contention and others fall away.

And in the aftermath of UFC 304, MMA News has you covered with this week’s updates to the official UFC rankings.

Men’s Pound-For-Pound: In addition to reaching the mountaintop at 170 pounds, Belal Muhammad’s title-winning triumph over Leon Edwards this past weekend has seen him join the P4P rankings. The newly crowned welterweight champion has debuted at #6, with his defeated opponent dropping three spots to #7. Muhammad’s arrival has resulted in the removal of former bantamweight champ Aljamain Sterling.

Also on a climb is the other man who left the Co-op Live with gold in his possession, Tom Aspinall. The interim heavyweight kingpin’s rapid knockout of Curtis Blaydes has seen him rise by two places to #9, jumping above Max Holloway (#10), Dricus Du Plessis (#11), and Alexandre Pantoja (#12).

Women’s Pound-for-Pound: No changes.

Women’s Strawweight: No changes.

Women’s Flyweight: No changes.

Women’s Bantamweight: No changes.

Flyweight: After some controversial antics and a lackluster victory at UFC 304, Muhammad Mokaev evidently didn’t do enough to convince the promotion he was worth re-signing. As a result of his departure, “The Punisher” has been quickly removed from the 125-pound rankings. That’s paved the way for Cody Durden to return at #15.

The man he beat at UFC 304, Manel Kape, has fallen by one position to #9, with both Steve Erceg (#7) and Matheus Nicolau (#8) receiving two-spot boosts to jump above “Starboy.”

Bantamweight: No changes.

Featherweight: Arnold Allen’s decision win over Giga Chikadze in the early hours of Sunday morning was enough to secure his return to the top five at 145 pounds. “Almighty” has moved up by one spot to share the #5 place with former opponent Movsar Evloev.

Lightweight: Paddy Pimblett was among the biggest winners to emerge from UFC 304, putting King Green to sleep with a triangle choke to record his first success over ranked opposition. As expected, the result has pushed “The Baddy” into contention, with the Liverpool native replacing Green at #15.

Welterweight: With Muhammad surging to the throne in Manchester, Edwards has slipped back to the #1 position as the leader in the chasing pack. That’s also left former champ Kamaru Usman one place worse off at #2.

Middleweight: No changes.

Light Heavyweight: No changes.

Heavyweight: After falling short in his first UFC title shot, Blaydes has been relegated to #5 in the heavyweight pecking order, with Sergei Pavlovich replacing him at #4 a month on from his defeat to Alexander Volkov in Saudi Arabia.

It wasn’t to be King Green’s night at UFC 304 as he made the trip over to Manchester to take on a home crowd favorite.

Liverpool’s Paddy Pimblett provided a much-needed boost to the fans inside the Co-op Live in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The energy from his walk out carried into the fight itself, where after Green shot for a takedown and “The Baddy” was able to showcase his submission skills off his back.

Locking up a slick triangle, Pimblett was able to choke his opponent unconscious whilst extending his arm at the same time, to secure a huge first-round finish against his first ranked opponent.

King Green Reflects On First Round Loss At UFC 304: ‘Kill Or Be Killed’

Green spoke for the first time since the fight via a video that he posted on his Instagram stories, where he prepared himself for fan backlash.

The 50-fight veteran made no excuses for the defeat and said that he expects to receive negative messages and comments from the fans after being submitted.

Green is no stranger to being on both sides of highlight reel finishes so this isn’t a new experience for him and as he said himself, it’s kill or be killed at his level.

“What a day. Thank you guys for checking in on me, I’m okay I guess. You know, s*** happens. Felt like I slipped into some s*** and it just all went the perfect way, I had a bad night. No excuses, s*** happens. I live by a code, kill or be killed. Today I got killed. Let the ridicule begin, you know, I know what comes with this. You guys can talk your s***, I know what comes with this. Let’s go.”
