During the live broadcast of Bellator 170 tonight (Jan. 21, 2017) at The Forum in Inglewood, California, the promotion announced that a rematch between former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal would be taking place on March 31, 2017 presented on Spike.

Commentator Jimmy Smith also mentioned that the fight would be taking place at heavyweight.

The two rivals met for the first time at Bellator 120 in May 2014 in a bout that Jackson won via unanimous decision, although many felt as if “King Mo” should’ve gotten the nod.

Since then, “Rampage” has won two straight including a unanimous decision victory over Fabio Maldonado at UFC 186 in April 2015 as well as a split decision victory over Satoshi Ishii at Bellator 157 last June.

“King Mo”, on the other hand, has been extremely active since dropping a decision to Jackson. After his fight with “Rampage”, Lawal put together a seven fight win streak before losing to reigning Bellator light heayweight champion Phil Davis last May. He then bounced back with a unanimous decision victory over Ishii before being stopped by Mirko Cro Cop at a Rizin event last month.

Who do you expect to win the rematch between Jackson and Lawal?

Mirko “Cro-Cop” Filipovic was successful in his Rizin FF Openweight tournament second round fight against King Mo Lawal, finishing the American fighter in the second round with a flurry of ground strikes. The bout was the headliner of Rizin FF 3’s second round event, held December 29 in Saitama, Japan.

Lawal, a replacement for Wanderlei Silva, who pulled out of the fight with less than a month to go, found the takedown early, but was unable to finish the dangerous striker. From that point, Cro-Cop seemed to shore up his takedown defense while softening Lawal up with kicks prior to the end of the first. The second round saw Cro-Cop catch King Mo along the ropes, dropping him to the canvass before finishing him with some powerful ground strikes.

The win makes it five straight victories for Cro-Cop (33–11–2 (1)), while Mo (20–6 (1)) loses just weeks removed from his December 16 victory over Satoshi Ishii in Bellator. Cro-Cop now advances to take on Baruto Kaito in the semi-finals of the tournament. The other bracket will see Iranian wrestler Amir Aliakbari, who picked up a win over Heath Herring earlier in the night, face Russia’s Valentin Moldavsky.

Bellator MMA put the finishing touches on 2016 last Friday night with Bellator 169 from the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

Despite the card airing via tape-delay on Spike, it still generated solid ratings numbers, according to a release from the network.

The ratings for the show included 699,000 viewers with a peak of 965,000, making it the most watched of the international Bellator MMA cards to date.

Bellator 169 included a main event that saw Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal defeat former Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii. Also, James Gallagher earned a win in the co-main event over Anthony Taylor.

Sinead Kavanagh made her promotional debut with a decision win over Elina Kallionidou, Daniel Weichel secured his position as No. 1 featherweight contender with a first round submission vs. Brian Moore and Cameron Else finished Dylan Tuke in just 20 seconds.

Bellator returns in January with Bellator 170 on January 21 featuring Chael Sonnen vs. Tito Ortiz.

“King Mo” Lawal Feels “Shocked” By Love From Irish Fans

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal will headline Friday’s Bellator 169 card against former Olympic gold medalist Satoshi Ishii.

And despite being thousands of miles away from his base of operations in the U.S., the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion has developed a cult-like following.

“I’m shocked (by the support from the Irish fans),” said Lawal during a pre-fight press conference. “I came here to do PR last time and everyone was cool, but this time around it’s been even better. I went to Nandos (a restaurant) and got hooked up with like $70 worth of food. If y’all haven’t eaten at Nandos yet I suggest you try it out because that place is good.”

Lawal had his seven-fight win streak snapped by Phil Davis this past May. Davis went on to capture the light heavyweight title after the win.

For Lawal, the bout is a chance to shine on Spike from Dublin, but he just wants Ishii to “bring it” come fight-night.

“Don’t run around the cage. Fight me square, entertain the fans, and put on a good show,” he said. “All the people out there, ya’ll better tune in and watch me kick and beat Ishii’s (expletive) out the cage.”
