When new UFC Bantamweight Kris Moutinho makes his Octagon debut on Saturday night, he will be opening up a Conor McGregor pay-per-view against one of the best up-and-coming prospects in the sport in ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley.

When it comes to Moutinho however, this came as a welcome surprise for him and his team in New England.

“It was a surprise to me, as well,” Moutinho told reporters at a UFC 264 media session at the UFC Apex. “I’m just as thrown for a loop as you guys, so it’s crazy. I love it. My coach, when the sweepstakes came out, the Sean O’Malley sweepstakes, he was like, ‘It’s a long shot man. You want to just throw your name in?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, why not? Let’s do it.’ A couple of days went by. I wasn’t hearing anything. I was like, ‘It’s probably not going to happen.’

“He was like, ‘OK, you made it past the first round. They took your name. They’re going to look at it. Within 15 minutes, I was getting DMs from random people telling me that I’m going to get knocked out and get beat up and I was like, ‘Oh man, what are you guys talking about?’ Five minutes after that, he called me back and he was like, ‘Yeah man – we got it. Just get ready. Cut the weight’ and let’s go show the world who I am.”

Moutinho hasn’t had much time to prepare for O’Malley, but knows the opportunity in front of him is a potentially life-changing event and feels as if he’s prepared for this moment for some time now.

“He’s a very talented, explosive kid, but I just don’t think somebody’s been in there to test, to push him that way,” Moutinho said. “The only time he was kind of pushed was the (Marlon) ‘Chito’ (Vera) fight, and he got hurt. So he has a little fallback to why he was going to win that fight, but he got hurt. I think I’m just going to stay in his face, put the pressure, and I think that’s something that he’s not comfortable with.

“I’ve been putting on great fights my entire career, and I’ve fought some of the best talent outside the UFC and some of them are in the UFC now. I fought Manny Bermudez when he was in the UFC in my amateur career and then I fought Tony Gravely not too long ago in a crazy fight. So I’ve been fighting some of the better dudes in the country for a very long time.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

It’s hard to deny O’Malley as the big favorite going in, but it certainly cannot be understated that Moutinho has put in the work and will be ready for the challenge.

How do you feel about Kris Moutinho going into this fight? Should Sean O’Malley have gotten a fighter on the roster?

Sean O’Malley Defends UFC 264 Opponent: ‘He’s Not Just A Scrub’

After a staph infection forced Hawaii’s Louis Smolka [17-7-0] out, the search began to find a short-notice replacement for 135lb showman, ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley [13-1-0] at July 10th’s UFC 264.

The bright spark, O’Malley, is said to have had a number of contenders chomping at the bit for the chance to face off against the high-profile fighter. Yet many fans arched their eyebrows following the announcement that the little-known Kris Moutinho [9-4-0] would be squaring off with Suga, in his debut for the promotion. Better still, the clash serves as a tasty hors d’oeuvre to the McGregor vs Poirier III main meal at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, live on PPV. Quite the induction for the 5’7” Moutinho.

The initial frontrunner to face ‘Suga’ was Vancouver, Washington native, Ricky Simón but that bout fell out of bed when the American Top Team Portland alumni was unable to make the 135lb bantamweight cut-off.

“They sent me a list of a couple of guys, Simón being one of them,” O’Malley told MMAJunkie I told them, ‘I want to stay on the card. I’ve had a great camp and my weight is trending towards a bantamweight fight. Find me someone that can make ’35.’ They sent me a list of names, Simón was the toughest one on there and I picked him. They called me and said, ‘He can’t make weight.’ I don’t know if it was a miscommunication that they put his name in there, for ’45. I told the UFC, I was pretty clear that I want to fight at ’35. So, I dunno. There’s a lot of people on Twitter that called me out that weren’t on that list. I’m just happy I’m on the card at ’35.”

O’Malley comes in as a -900 favourite for the bout. Yet, despite the criticism from the fans, the Montana Maverick remains wary that Moutinho isn’t getting the props he merits.

“A lot of people think it’s a lose-lose for me. I make a lot of money to go out there and knock the guy (out). This guy’s tough. I watched one of his fights this morning and he’s not just a scrub, he’s not a nobody. Well, he is kind of a nobody because no one really knows who he is. But to be fair, not a lot of people know who Simón is, really. He’s beat a couple dudes in the UFC. I couldn’t tell you how many fights he’s had in the UFC. So he comes in there, he shocks the world, it’s a huge fight for him. Props to him for stepping up to take it.”

While there’s evident respect for the skills of Moutinho, the 5’11’’ KO specialist, O’Malley, will still be looking to sizzle in Sin City.

“He might go in there thinking it’s a win-win for him. He goes out there and loses, he’s in the UFC. But I don’t just knock people out. I change people’s careers. Mentally, the way I knock people out, they step into that cage and they’re different the next time they get out there. So it could be the beginning of his career or it could be the end of his career. So, we’ll see.”

UFC 264 will take place on July 10th, 2021 headlined by the lightweight trilogy between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Accompanying them on this pay-per-view card is UFC rising star turned mainstay Sean O’Malley.

O’Malley was scheduled to face Luis Smolka, who has amassed a 3-2 UFC record with all three wins coming via stoppage, but was forced withdraw from the bout due to an undisclosed injury.

With this short notice opportunity to face one of the sport’s biggest stars came plenty of bids from a number of fighters. The only bid that turned into a buy was newcomer Kris Moutinho‘s, who will now face O’Malley on short notice via one of the biggest pay-per-view cards of the year.

O’Malley will welcome Moutinho to the UFC, who is 9-4 professionally and has won his last two bouts with the CFFC. Not only is this a short notice opportunity of a few weeks, but Moutinho just fought on May 28th, so this will mark one of his quickest professional turnarounds.

As for O’Malley, he has gained traction across the macro of the sport and at just 26 years of age, he looks to be apart of the UFC’s plans at bantamweight for the foreseeable future. He suffered his first professional loss against Marlon Vera at UFC 252, but answered with a knockout win over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260.

With just a few weeks to prepare, does Kris Moutinho have a live chance to halt the metaphorical train that is Sean O’Malley?
