KSW 54 went down today (Sat., Aug 29) with one of the promotion’s most prominent stars Mateusz Gamrot defending his lightweight title in the main event.

It was a quick turn around for the 29-year-old, who also fought on the main event of KSW 53. Gamrot has been angling for a move to the UFC, and today’s fight was the last on his KSW contract.

Facing off against compatriot Marian Ziolkowski, after his initial opponent Shamil Musaev withdrew from the bout following an injury, Gamrot was just too good for his game but outmatched opponent. Ziolkowski did his best to make a fight out of the contest and did manage to last the distance. However, when the final scores were read out, it was a comfortable unanimous decision victory for the reigning champ. Two judges had it 50-45, with the third scoring it 49-46.

In the co-main event former heavyweight boxer, Izu Ugonoh made a solid start to his MMA career with a first-round TKO victory over France’s Quentin Domingos. However, the heavy-hitting Pole had little chance to show his true range after Domingos sustained a leg injury and wanted no more part of Ugonoh. The 33-year-old Ugonoh, who is also a former kickboxer, did demonstrate that his hands are still as deadly as ever and that he can still land chopping kicks when the occasion calls for it. He will be a fun addition to the KSW roster, and it will be interesting to see how he develops as a mixed martial artist.

The promotion also dropped a trailer for KSW 55, which take place on Saturday, Oct 10. Headlining the event will be a heavyweight clash between Szymon Ko?ecki and ?ukasz Jurkowski.

KSW Lightweight Champion Mateusz Gamrot will defend his title against Shamil Musaev at the main event of KSW 54. The card will be broadcast live from a studio in Warsaw, Poland, on August 29.

After being out of the cage for over a year, Gamrot successfully returned to action last month at KSW 53, with a third-round stoppage of arch-rival Norman Parke. The Polish fighter was simply too slick for his game opponent, whom he picked apart with relative ease. The undefeated 29-year-old has successfully defended his title on four occasions and has recently been angling to move to the UFC. He is set to face undefeated Russian Shamil Musaev, who has racked up a pair of first-round stoppages in his two promotional appearances.

After building a name for himself on the Russian regional scene, Musaev made his KSW debut at KSW 48, scoring a TKO victory over Hubert Szymajda. The 26-year-old then stole the show at KSW 52 after knocking out former title challenger Grzegorz Szulakowski with a perfectly timed spinning back fist.

The co-main event of KSW 54 will feature the promotional debut of former Polish heavyweight boxer Izu Ugonoh, who will face France’s Quentin Domingos. Ugonoh left boxing with an 18-2 record with 15 of his wins coming via KO, and it will be interesting to see how the heavy-hitting Pole adapts to MMA.

After a six-month hiatus, Polish MMA promotion KSW had a triumphant return to action over the weekend with KSW 53: Reborn taking place behind closed doors in Warsaw.

During the broadcast, the company made two notable announcements. The first was that KSW 54 would take place in just under a month on August 9. The second was the signing of Polish heavyweight boxer and former kickboxer Izuagbe Ugonoh.

Ugonoh’s professional boxing record stands at 18-2, with 15 of his wins coming via knock out. A noted power puncher Ugonoh spent several years training alongside former WBO heavyweight world champion Joseph Parker. The pair formed a tight-bond with Ugonoh fighting on several of Parker’s undercards in Parker’s home country of New Zealand.

During his time-fighting in NZ, Ugonoh captured several regional titles, including the WBO Africa title as well as the interim WBA Oceania belt. The Pole’s most significant bout to date took place against world heavyweight title challenger Dominic Breazeale. The two men put on a wild five-round brawl that ended with Breazeale stopping Ugonoh in the fifth.

The 34-year-old’s last outing was a fourth-round loss to compatriot ?ukasz Ró?a?ski in July 2019. Following this bout, Ugonoh turned his focus to MMA, and his signing will be an injection of excitement into KSW’s heavyweight division.

“He is a world-class boxer with big knockout power. So as a fan, I am also interested to see how he transitions to MMA. ” KSW CEO Martin Lewandowski said when speaking to Sherdog.

“We’ve been speaking a little while about this but now it’s finally time to see him in the KSW Arena. And you will see him compete sooner rather than later.”

There has been no announcement as to who ‘Izu’ will face when he makes his promotional debut, but with KSW 54 less than four weeks away, it will not be too long before the name is revealed.

MMA GIF of the Day: Fighter Nearly Invents New Punch, Gets Upkicked Instead

On Saturday night at KSW 28, Angolan lightweight Helson Henriquez nearly pulled off what MiddleEasy described as a “Showtime Shogun Punch.” You know, it’s that thing where you grab the fence and launch yourself into the air to land a diving punch into your opponent’s guard? And he would have gotten away with it too, if not for that meddling Anzor Azhiev (aka, the Polish dude on the mat), who landed a perfectly timed upkick to Henriquez’s shoulder, sending him into a tailspin. Henriquez went on to lose the fight by unanimous decision. Nevertheless, this remains the greatest “Yeah, But If That Thing Landed!” moment of 2014.
