Notorious knockout artist and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has run through a murderer’s row of contenders on his quest to securing 145 pound gold, which he did with a spectacular 13 second knockout of Jose Aldo at December 12, 2015’s UFC 194.

The Irishman appears to be hungry for the toughest of challenges, however, as he’s set to take on reigning lightweight king Rafael dos Anjos at March 5’s UFC 196 in an attempt to become the first man in promotional history to simultaneously hold two titles.

Getting that second title will be no easy task for McGregor, as dos Anjos has been a force to be reckoned with as of late.

The Brazilian champion has won five straight including three finishes over the cream of the crop at 155 pounds, leading UFC president to call McGregor crazy for taking on RDA:

“Conor wants to be a two-belt champion, so he wants to fight dos Anjos, which is crazy,” the UFC president said on “Opie with Jim Norton” on Thursday. “If you look at that guy, look what he did to ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, look what he did to Ben Henderson, look what he did to Anthony Pettis. And now Conor wants to fight this guy. It’s gonna be awesome.”

While many feel as if he may have problems with dos Anjos inside of the Octagon, McGregor has already begun to unleash his relentless trash talk in hopes of playing mind games with the Brazilian.

White feels as if it’s more than just trash talk, however, noting that the “Notorious” is very calculated and intelligent with mental warfare:

“It’s not even about shit talk with this guy,” White said. “His mental warfare game is better than anything I’ve ever seen in how he gets in guys’ heads immediately. Very intelligent, calculated. Conor McGregor is a very interesting guy.”

At the end of the day, McGregor has combined his mic skills with his world class fighting abilities to become one of the promotion’s biggest draws. White wasn’t afraid to admit that the “Notorious” one is the “money fight”, claiming that there aren’t many fighters who don’t want a piece of him:

“From flyweight to heavyweight, they all want to fight Conor McGregor,” White said. “It’s the money fight.”

Can the Irishman add another title to his resume?

RDA: McGregor Is In My Head, But I Will Dominate Him

Aside from his ferocious knockout ability, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has used his relentless and tactical trash talk to seemingly break his opponents. Aside from his ferocious knockout ability, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has used his relentless and tactical trash talk to seemingly break his opponents.

Scheduled to move up in weight and challenge lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at March 5’s UFC 196, the “Notorious” one has not changed the script, verbally assaulting the Brazilian champion from the get go at a recent press conference.

Dos Anjos isn’t too pleased with McGregor’s antics, claiming that the Irishman’s style has cast a black cloud over the sport:

“He crosses the line all the time. He answered questions the media asked me, talked about my kids, said I’m not a Brazilian. Man, all the time. He said I’m sloppy. He crosses the line all the time. He’s here to confuse everyone, give the sport a bad image. He thinks it’s nice to dress up like a drug dealer. I don’t think that’s a nice way to promote a fight. That doesn’t add anything to the sport. Georges St-Pierre always sold well as a champion doing exactly the opposite.” dos Anjos told MMAFighting.

While McGregor’s talk certainly adds an entertainment value to a fight, he has also used it to get into the mind of his opponent before the two even step foot inside the cage. While previous opponents have fought hard to keep the “Notorious” one out of their heads, dos Anjos admits that McGregor is on his mind constantly.

However, the Brazilian ensures that he will dominate come fight night:

“Every opponent gets inside my head because I think about them for three of four months. He’s in my head just like every other opponent before. I wake up thinking about him, I go to the gym thinking about him. That’s how he’s in my head. Nate Diaz pushed me at the weigh-in, but I fight even better when my opponents make it personal. I will dominate him.”

In a clash of two champions, McGregor will look to make history by becoming the first man to simultaneously hold two titles.

Can he get through the bulldozing dos Anjos?

Werdum Would’ve Fought Velasquez Injured, Miocic’s Manager Blasts Champ

Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum was supposed to defend his title for the very first time at February 6, 2016’s UFC 196 in a rematch against former boss Cain Velasquez. Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum was supposed to defend his title for the very first time at February 6, 2016’s UFC 196 in a rematch against former boss Cain Velasquez.

Things were shaken up, however, when Velasquez was forced out of the bout yesterday (January 24, 2015) due to a back injury suffered in training. The UFC quickly announced that No. 2-ranked Stipe Miocic would step up on short notice to battle Werdum for the title, which is why fans were so shocked to hear today (January 25, 2016) that Werdum will also be pulling out of the fight due to an injury.

Speaking with MMAFighting.com, “Vai Cavalo” elaborated on his injury, adding in that if Velasquez hadn’t pulled out that he would’ve still fought:

“I was already injured,” Werdum told Brazilian journalists on Monday. “I have a foot injury, and haven’t been able to throw kicks in training for two weeks. I would still fight Cain because I was injured the last time, but I also hurt my back last Friday. I went to the doctor, tried to continue training, but couldn’t spar as I should spar.

“I decided not to fight because I’m not 100 percent,” he continued. “If Cain was the opponent, I would go on. It’s not his fault, it’s nobody’s fault. Injuries happen. You can’t avoid them. I have no option. I made this decision because I’m not feeling 100 percent.”

Team Miocic wasn’t too pleased with this, as the Croatian’s manger said a champion shouldn’t “pick and choose opponents”:

“We’re extremely disappointed to hear that Werdum is pulling out of the fight,” Miocic’s manager, Greg Kalikas, told MMAFighting.com via text message. “If he’s [Werdum is] healthy enough to defend against Cain, we can’t understand why he’s not healthy enough to fight Stipe, who would only have 12 days to prepare for him as it stands.

“A champion shouldn’t pick and choose opponents. A true champion fights all comers. If he won’t fight Stipe with a short camp, are we supposed to believe he’d fight Stipe coming off a full training camp? No, he wouldn’t… and that’s a bad look for the supposed best heavyweight on the planet. All we can hope is that Werdum ‘heals’ up quick and will agree to fight Stipe sooner rather than later.”

Do you agree with Miocic’s manager, or should Werdum heal up and fight at his best?

The circus surrounding February 6, 2016’s UFC 196 from Las Vegas has continued.

Yesterday (January 24, 2016) it was announced that former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez would be forced out of his scheduled main event rematch with current champion Fabricio Werdum due to a back injury.

It was then quickly made clear that No. 2-ranked Stipe Miocic would step up on short notice to take on “Vai Cavalo” for the undisputed world title. Now, however, it appears as if the title won’t be up for grabs at all.

MMAFighting.com has reported that Werdum will also be pulling out of UFC 196 due to an undisclosed injury.

The nature of the Brazilian’s injury is currently unknown, and the UFC has yet to comment on the situation, but it appears as if they may have some trouble on their hands.

The scheduled co-main event features a welterweight bout between former champ Johny Hendricks and Stephen Thompson, not exactly a pay-per-view (PPV) headliner.

VanZant On “Awesome” Loss To Namajunas: No Excuses, But Lots Of Blood

Rising UFC women’s strawweight contender Paige “12 Guage” VanZant suffered a slight set back in her last bout when she took on former title challenger “Thug” Rose Namaunas in the main event of December 10, 2015’s UFC Fight Night 80 from Las Vegas. Rising UFC women’s strawweight contender Paige “12 Guage” VanZant suffered a slight set back in her last bout when she took on former title challenger “Thug” Rose Namaunas in the main event of December 10, 2015’s UFC Fight Night 80 from Las Vegas.

Despite being on the short end of a brutal and bloody five round beating, “12 Guage” recently called the loss “awesome”:

“I think it’s awesome,” VanZant told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “I don’t know. I thought it was awesome. I was just looking to see how bad the cut was or where it was, because I wasn’t really sure. I saw it was under my eye, so it was good to go for the next five rounds or four rounds.”

Namajunas would go on to score a submission victory in the final frame, proving to the world that was a legitimate threat at 115-pounds, while also making it clear that the 21 year old VanZant has some holes in her game to improve on.

Although the fight was fairly one sided, PVZ has received quite a bit of praise and support regarding her pure heart, grit, and toughness, something she didn’t necessarily expect:

“I really didn’t expect that much support,” VanZant said. “I thought I embarrassed myself out there and I put on an embarrassing performance. But then afterward I had all these positive articles. I was reading all these positive things after the fight. It felt really good, especially after taking a loss not to take a ton of criticism for it. It was really neat that I still had a lot of fans come forward and my stock grew even after a loss.”

While Namajunas’ skill set was clearly the superior on fight night, VanZant was also a bloody mess from the first round on, something that may have hindered her performance as well. Not making any excuses, the Team Alpha Male product admitted the she had blood in her ears for weeks after the scrap:

“Especially because we did go to the ground a lot, I couldn’t see at all,” VanZant said. “And the blood completely filled my ears. I was cleaning blood out of my ears for three weeks after the fight. So I couldn’t hear anything. I couldn’t hear anything, I couldn’t see anything. No excuses. But yeah — a lot of blood.”

At the end of the day, VanZant proved that while there’s obviously room for improvement, she isn’t one to give up too easily:

“I have a no-give-up attitude,” VanZant said. “It didn’t surprise me in that sense, but it was definitely a good test.”

Who should “12 Guage” meet next?

Conor McGregor Unhappy With Promotion Of UFC 197: Those Posters Are Garbage

UFC 197, which is slated for March 5, 2016 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, will play host to arguably one of the biggest fights in not only promotional history, but sport history as well.

Reigning featherweight champion and Irish superstar the “Notorious” Conor McGregor will be moving up to challenge lightweight boss Rafael dos Anjos for the 155-pound title.

Although McGregor’s title won’t be on the line, this is a bout between champions, and a sure super fight to say the least. According to the “Notorious” one, however, the fight isn’t being promoted that way, and the Irishman isn’t too happy about it.

Recently speaking at the UFC 197 press conference which was held in Las Vegas earlier this week, McGregor wondered why he wasn’t holding his belt in the event’s promotional posters, even going as far as to call the work “garbage”:

“This is a super fight. I look upon that poster, I see myself tucked in the back there. That’s what I just noticed, where is my damn belt? Where are all these historic images? These are posters that will be looked back on long after it’s all said and done and you’ve got to look back on that absolute garbage. So you know, I think I might have to go into that department because they must be getting comfortable in that poster department. They wanna get their act together and start doing their damn job. [Dos Anjos] fought on free TV. He’s never brought a dime to the company, he’s never made a dime yet there he is sitting on the front of my poster.”

When asked what the reasoning behind this was, UFC President Dana White simply stated that it was because McGregor wasn’t defending his title.

This isn’t the first time two champions have gone head to head in the Octagon, as former lightweight champion BJ Penn took on former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre back at UFC 94 for St-Pierre’s then held 170-pound strap.

Oddly enough, Penn’s 155-pound title was in the event’s posters, with “The Prodigy” carrying it around leading it up the bout as well. It was made clear that UFC 94’s main event was a bout between two champions making this current scenario quite odd, especially given McGregor’s star power.

What do you make of the situation?
