Nate Diaz

Nate Diaz has taken aim at welterweight contender Leon Edwards and lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in his latest post on social media.

Diaz has a long running beef with the undefeated Russian. The two men even got into it at a World Series of Fighting show back in 2015, resulting in Diaz slapping Nurmagomedov. They again exchanged words at UFC 239 which led to Diaz being kicked out of the event.

However, his feud with Leon Edwards is relatively new and only came about because the Englishman took a shot at the rumoured BMF rematch between Diaz and Jorge Masvidal.

“Stop being a p*ssy and f*ckin’ let’s fight, right? You say you’re the Street Jesus and you’re (the) BMF, let’s prove the case,” Edwards said to ESPN. “You can’t go out there and fight a guy you just f*ckin’ battered for three rounds and then do it again and say you are the BMF. That’s not how it works, so stop being a p*ssy and step up.”

Diaz then mocked Edwards for allowing Masvidal to hit him with the three piece and the soda backstage at UFC London, while simultaneously reminding Nurmagomedov he did something similar to him a few years ago, he wrote.

“You got f*cked up in the back for acting like you were tight. This fight sh*t is the same everywhere, in or out of the cage… don’t get punked ever. That goes for kabob also, you guys are in last place now lol.”

Edwards is currently without an opponent and has been inactive since his UFC Fight Night San Antonio headliner against former lightweight titleholder, Rafael dos Anjos in July of last year – a relatively comfortable decision win.

Edwards was scheduled to headline UFC Fight Night London in March opposite former division champion, Tyron Woodley until the entire event was shelved amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In his place, this time in Las Vegas at the UFC APEX facility stepped Gilbert Burns who would go on to takeout Woodley and secure his status as number-one contender to Kamaru Usman’s throne.

What do you make of Nate Diaz firing shots at Leon Edwards and Khabib Nurmagomedov?

EDITORIAL – Who Could Leon Edwards Fight Next?

Edwards

Englishman Leon Edwards is currently on an eight-fight UFC winning streak and if not for COVID-19, could well have made the move to even bigger things.

However, it was not to be as a fight with Tyron Woodley ended up being postponed indefinitely with the American now turning his attention to Colby Covington, who he fights on September 19.

As we know, things change quickly in the fight game and one should never rule anything out, so, with that in mind, who should the most exciting fighter ever to come out of Birmingham fight next?

Kamaru Usman

There are two reasons why Usman could be next on the cards for Edwards. Firstly, ‘Rocky’ was actually offered the fight with Usman after Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID-19 but had to decline due to a lack of resources to prepare properly.

That coincides with the second reason which is that Usman is actually the last man to beat Edwards in the Octagon and surely the Birmingham fighter would love a chance of revenge.

The only issues remains is if the UFC will want to book it or if they will ask Edwards to prove his title chops once more before granting him a shot at the champion.

Tyron Woodley

Yes, it may seem an obvious choice but that is exactly why Woodley is on this list. Woodley is a former champion which appeals to Edwards and although the Englishman is ranked higher according to the UFC rankings, Edwards is well aware that if he takes down Woodley, a title shot could be in the making.

Jorge Masvidal

Admittedly, Edwards has stated he is not interested in fighting anyone beneath him, there may be few options left to him.

As mentioned above, Jorge Masvidal did just lose to Usman in what was hardly a surprise, but the 35-year-old is no fool and would prove a stern test for Edwards especially if he is looking to build an impressive welterweight CV.

However, the fight seems unlikely due to the fact Masvidal is more interested in chasing “money” fights against the likes of Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor – something Edwards is not happy about. ‘Rocky’ and ‘Street Jesus’ have an ongoing beef which stems from Masvidal giving Edwards a “three-piece and a soda” at UFC London.

Gilbert Burns

The number one contender is now negative for COVID-19 after recovering well but did admit in July that he was only 85% physically fit.

Burns would prove an appealing prospect for Edwards however the Brazilian submission specialist is now set to square off against Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 256 on December 12. Will Edwards be willing to wait until 2021 to face the winner or loser of this 170lb title fight? Probably not. ‘Rocky’ hasn’t fought since defeating Rafael dos Anjos at UFC on ESPN 4 back in July 2019 and is in desperate need of a fight sooner rather than later.

Leon Edwards

Welterweight contender Leon Edwards has gone in on Jorge Masvidal for accepting a fight against #12 ranked Nate Diaz rather than fight him to decide who is next in line for the winner of Kamaru Usman vs. Gilbert Burns and settle their ongoing beef.

Edwards was not happy after the news broke of Masvidal-Diaz II. The Englishman took to social media to chastise ‘Gamebred’ for opting to fight a lower-ranked guy rather than settle their beef, he wrote.

“Could have fought number 3, yet chose to fight number 12. Eventually this p*ssy will fight me, I’m all for money fights but watching two journeymen go at it again when it wasn’t even competitive is a joke. And this is the “BMF”.

Edwards and Masvidal have been expected to fight ever since the pair got into a physical altercation that saw Masvidal land his famous three-piece and a soda on Edwards backstage at UFC London in March 2019. However, the fight is yet to come to fruition with Masvidal instead opting to fight Ben Askren and Nate Diaz before taking a last minute title shot against Usman at UFC 251 in July.

Edwards has not fought in over a year since beating Rafael Dos Anjos in July 2019. The Birmingham, England native currently boasts an eight-fight win streak and hasn’t lost since 2015. He is perhaps just one more win away from taking on the last man to defeat him – Kamaru Usman.

Now that Masvidal, Diaz, Covington, Woodley Burns and Usman are off the table it is unclear who will be next for Edwards. The next available contender is Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson who is currently ranked #6 at 170lbs. Beyond him you have the likes of Demian Maia and Michael Chiesa but it seems unlikely Edwards will accept a fight that some may consider a backwards step.

Do you agree with Leon Edwards? Should Jorge Masvidal be trying to fight higher ranked guys than Nate Diaz?

Edwards Masvidal

Leon Edwards is not giving up on a fight with Jorge Masvidal.

Earlier this week, the Birmingham native called for the fight to take place especially as everyone else in the top five of the welterweight division were booked.

He would reiterate the same following a recent Masvidal tweet on Sunday where “Gamebred” was seemingly calling for his next fight to be booked.

“6 days. 20 pounds. Flew to Vegas. Vegas to Abu Dhabi. Fought the champ. Created the damage. He’s out for a minute. I’ve been ready since I got back. Time to move the division forward. Your move #supernecessary”

Edwards: Give The Fans What They Want

Edwards responded soon after.

“Fight me then p*ssy.”

“Rocky” would then post an image of the rankings and explain how a fight between the pair was the only one that made sense.

“Let’s get it.. stop with all the excuses and give the fans and the @ufc what they want,” he added.

It certainly makes sense to match them up, especially given the rankings and their infamous brawl last year at UFC London.

Whether Masvidal accepts is another question.

Do you think we’ll see them fight next?
