Edwards Masvidal

Leon Edwards is ready to settle his feud with Jorge Masvidal.

On Wednesday, the Birmingham native called to face Masvidal next as it was the only fight that made sense for him outside of a title shot.

“Let’s make it happen, it’s the only fight that make sense for me outside the championship, everyone else in the top 5 already booked so let’s get it”

It certainly makes sense for Edwards.

Current UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman just defeated Masvidal at UFC 251 last month and is set to defend his title against Gilbert Burns next.

That means Edwards — currently on an eight-fight winning streak — can either wait for the winner or remain active. Given his history with Masvidal along with the rankings, it’s not a surprise to see why he wants that fight too.

But whether it makes sense for Masvidal is a different story.

“Why would jorge fight him? cause it makes sense for Leon? Don’t think we are interested in making fights that make sense for Leon,” Masvidal’s co-manager Abraham Kawa tweeted. “Hopefully Leon gets a good fight soon. We are interested in making fights that make sense for Jorge.”

Gilbert Burns

UFC welterweight contenders Gilbert Burns and Leon Edwards traded insults as they argued about who is next in line for 170lb champion Kamaru Usman. Usman defended his title against Jorge Masvidal in the UFC 251 main event this past weekend.

Burns was supposed to face ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ at UFC 251 but was forced out of the bout due to the fact he tested positive for COVID-19. However, Edwards was the first choice to face Usman on ‘Fight Island’ but he was forced to turn down the bout due to the ongoing global pandemic.

Speaking post-fight at UFC 251 Dana White said Burns will get the next title shot but MMA reporter Ariel Helwani suggested Burns face off against Edwards instead to prove himself the number one contender much to the disappointment of ‘Durinho’ who replied with the following before Edwards got involved.

“Only fair? Come on @arielhelwani I know you don’t like me and I couldn’t care less. But let’s go to facts I just k.o the number 5 and dominate the number 1(former champ) Leon has good wins but no one in the top 5 So as the REAL BOSS @danawhite said I’m Next! That’s Only Fair”

“Shut your mouth boy you’re only where you are at due to good luck and circumstance. You have no place in the top 5 and you know it so sit the fuck down. You knocked out a 46 year old jujitsu guy and a washed woodley sit the fuck down,” Edwards fired back.

“Who you beat journeyman Cowboy? Split decision on Nelson?? RDA is the only real one you beat, but he wasn’t in the top 5. And you just fight once or 2 a year! Sit down ? the boss already said I’m next!”

“Remember boy you got the Woodley fight because I couldnt. You got the title shot because I couldnt. You are always steps behind me and you are levels below me.”

“Yes Leon you couldn’t fight twice, and your last fight was a year ago, and you want a title fight? Leon go try to revenge the 3 piece and a (soda) I just spoke with the boss I’m next! Better start to calling Jorge or Thompson forget bro no one cares abt Leon.”

Leon Edwards would like nothing more than to face the winner of the UFC 251 headliner taking place this weekend.

Kamaru Usman defends his welterweight title against Jorge Masvidal in the main event taking place Saturday in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Of course, it may have been Edwards challenging for the title himself as he is on an eight-fight winning streak and appeared to be a strong contender for the shot.

However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to those plans as his UFC London fight with Tyron Woodley in March was canceled while travel restrictions prevented him from competing afterwards. For now, he is just happy the division is moving forward, but would undoubtedly like to face the winner next.

“I’m just happy that the division (has) got some movement to it,” Edwards told MMA Junkie. “For a while, it’s been stagnant and nothing was happening, so it’s good to see them fighting. I got history with both men and I’d love to fight the winner.”

Edwards Believes He Deserves Shot Over Burns

Of course, it looked like Gilbert Burns was going to get the shot as he was booked to face Usman at UFC 251 following his win over Woodley in May. However, he tested positive for COVID-19 allowing Masvidal to step in.

Edwards sympathizes with Burns, but believes he should be given precedence over the Brazilian when it comes to the next shot.

“We both lost opportunities to coronavirus,” Edwards said. “For me, I couldn’t travel because of coronavirus and that’s the only reason (Burns) got to fight Woodley. Same as the title shot: I couldn’t travel because of coronavirus and they offered me a title shot, so we both lost opportunities to the same thing. So I can’t see why they would look over me when I’ve got the most wins in the division (compared) to the champion.”

That said, “Rocky” hasn’t competed since last July and if the winner on Saturday requires a long layoff, he is open to staying active and fighting Burns.

“It depends how long we’re waiting for,” Edwards added. “If it’s a long time waiting – like (the) end of the year, or next year – then I’d rather compete. My last fight was in July when I fought RDA, so that’s almost a year. So I would like to compete and stay active.”
