Leon Edwards has joined forces with fellow MMA fighters Darren Till and Jimi Manuwa to help prevent knife crime among the British youth. It was announced on May 1 the three fighters would be linking up with the government to find a solution to the issue after a spate of stabbings took place in the UK despite the fact the country is on lockdown right now.

Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA, Edwards opened up about how he became involved in the effort to prevent knife crime in his home country and how he managed to link up with Till and Manuwa, he said.

“For me, I grew up in that same environment. I understand what these kids are going through and what’s going through their heads. I retweeted a video a few weeks ago on my Instagram about that kid getting stabbed in Birmingham – one of my friends’ cousin. So, I messaged my management straight away and said ‘what can I do to help?’ And set something up that can help and prevent this. Jimi Manuwa reached out to me literally the next day and he was saying the same thing as me and it would be good to get Till involved as well. So that’s it really. We all came from the same situation as these kids. We all understand the kids. I think martial arts changed our lives and it can hopefully change someone else’s life.”

A month since first announcing their plan the three fighters have spoken with government officials and are now hoping to launch their own program in collaboration with the UFC that will see young Brits get martial arts training and mentoring for free.

“At the moment we are still bouncing ideas,” Edwards said. “At first the plan that came was like we are going to join someone else’s organisation. Our thing is though we want to do our own thing. We want to do it in our own way. We don’t want to join a pre-existing organisation. So at the moment it’s bouncing ideas, speaking to the UFC – they want to be involved as well. We think we are going to be doing our own thing with the UFC. It’s moving forward and we are getting more people involved which is good.”

“It’s about getting them into martial arts. Some of these kids don’t have money to come to the gym and can’t afford the memberships. So somehow we are trying to get it so the government can help us get these kids in the gym for free basically by covering the costs and we teach them, we mentor them and use the UFC to help as well. So, we don’t really have a timeline as to when it will launch but I think in the next month we should have something up in running. At the moment we are just bouncing ideas on what the best way to do it is, hopefully, we can help.”

Leon Edwards thinks it’s bizarre that Jorge Masvidal is seemingly passing up on a title shot against Kamaru Usman. The British fighter has never seen anything like this before and is hoping to get the call to fill in for ‘Gamebred’ and get his chance at UFC gold.

The UFC has been trying to negotiate a fight between bitter rivals Masvidal and Usman all year. However, it appears those negoations have come to a standstill as the BMF belt holder offered to “run it back” with Nate Diaz last week.

Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA Edwards revealed his amazement at seeing Masvidal pass on a title shot in favour of a fight with Diaz who admits is a bigger name but shouldn’t be pursued over the chance to become a champion.

“It’s weird,” Edwards said. “It’s very weird. In the history of the sport I’ve never known someone to turn down a title shot. Like, literally running away from a title shot, it’s weird. He’s either outbidding himself or just now saying he’s fighting (Nate) Diaz. I know he’s probably a bigger name but as far as technically when it’s all said and done you want to be a champion don’t you? And he does want to be a world champion so it’s weird, I don’t know, I don’t know how to take it.”

If Masvidal does pass up on fighting Usman the Birmingham native is hopeful he’ll be next in line for a shot at the champ, despite talk of a potential fight between ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ and Conor McGregor.

“I am 100 percent next in line,” Edwards said. “Dana (White) came out yesterday, or the day before and said the Conor (McGregor) fight isn’t happening. It’s either me, Masvidal or Colby (Covington). I don’t know why he put Colby in there because Colby aint getting nothing. It’s just us two really. Either me or Masvidal is going to get the shot. I’ve done enough work to deserve a shot and I cannot wait.”

If Edwards doesn’t get a title shot he believes a fight with one-time UFC title challenger Covington will be next, he said.

“At the moment they (UFC) are saying it’s either Colby or a title shot. I know Colby got kicked out of his gym, so he probably won’t fight now for a while. So, I think it’s going to be a title shot, hopefully, this summer.

Do you think Leon Edwards will get the next shot at welterweight champion Kamaru Usman?

Welterweight contender Leon Edwards is backing his rival Tyron Woodley to return to the win column by beating Brazilian submission specialist Gilbert Burns in the UFC on ESPN 9 main event.

‘The Chosen One’ hasn’t fought since losing his welterweight belt to Kamaru Usman last year. He was supposed to face off against Edwards at UFC London in March before the event was cancelled a week out from fight night.

Instead Woodley will face Burns who is coming off a career-best knockout win over fellow submission specialist and long-time contender Demian Maia.

Speaking exclusively to LowKickMMA Edwards explained how the two fighters have similar styles and said he expects Woodley to emerge victorious from the bout.

“I think Woodley,” Edwards said. “I think they’re a similar build, (have) similar fighting styles – wrestlers looking for overhand shots. They both fight like short men, all overhands and lead hooks. So, I’ll probably go Woodley.”

Edwards and Woodley have been going back and forth on social media since their fight fell through. Earlier this week Woodley came after Edwards after watching the backstage altercation between ‘Rocky’ and Jorge Masvidal that went viral after UFC London in March 2019. ‘The Chosen One’ said Edwards took the biggest loss he’d seen in a while during the scuffle.

Edwards took his opportunity to fire back at Woodley calling him the biggest “clout chaser” in MMA who is using his name to create drama on social media.

“He’s the biggest clout chaser there is,” Edwards said. “He’s weird. He’s a weird man. He’s like ‘everyone talks and I fight’ blah blah blah but he does the most talking on social media which is weird. Even this week he said ‘ahh I just seen the (Masvidal) video’. Like, no you didn’t. It’s like you had nothing to say about me. He wanted to make something up and try to keep carrying something on. Like, shut up you’re weird.”

Do you agree with Leon Edwards? Will Tyron Woodley beat Gilbert Burns in the UFC on ESPN 9 main event?

Don’t expect Leon Edwards to fight anyone ranked below him in the near future.

Edwards is on an eight-fight winning streak and was expected to face former champion Tyron Woodley in the UFC London headliner last month. Of course, that card was eventually canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Woodley has since targeted fights with the likes of Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington while Edwards has been stuck in the United Kingdom due to travel restrictions.

Ideally, “Rocky” wants to compete against Woodley next. But if that’s not the case, he will only face fighters ranked above him.

“For me, it has to be someone above me,” Edwards told MMA Junkie. “I’ve worked too hard to get into this position to be fighting Top 10. I’ve the second-most wins in the division compared to the champion, so I truly believe that I deserve a world title shot already.

“So the only way I’ll fight again is either (a) title shot or the No. 1 contender spot. There’s no point of me going backwards and fighting someone in the Top 10, because it’ll defeat the point of me getting to this position.

“… (The) only reason I wanted to fight Woodley was because he was a former world champion and the Usman fight was taken away from me because of Masvidal, so anyone above me is the only option right now.”

The UFC has an “interesting” alternative for Masvidal according to Dana White. So perhaps, Edwards could be in line for a title shot or even a grudge match with Masvidal.

It all hinges on whether he can travel to the United States in the near future.

Who do you think Edwards will fight next?
