UFC welterweight Leon Edwards still plans on throwing down with Jorge Masvidal — but for now, he’s focused on his next fight.

Edwards takes part in arguably the biggest fight of his career when he meets Rafael dos Anjos in the UFC San Antonio headliner this weekend. Many, however, expected him to face Masvidal by now, especially after their infamous backstage brawl back at UFC London.

“Rocky” — who is on a seven-fight winning streak — still holds a grudge towards Masvidal and claims his day will eventually come:

“Masvidal is a twat, and he did what he did, but his day will come,” Edwards told reporters. “We’ll prove to the world he’s this ‘gangster’ he thinks that he is. We’ll prove to the world he’s a ‘gangster.’”

With a potential win over dos Anjos, Edwards is hoping to either face Masvidal next or after he gets a title shot at Kamaru Usman and becomes champion. Regardless, UFC gold is the main priority for the Birmingham native:

“My aim is to be world champion,” Edwards explained. “I’m not chasing Masvidal. Like I said that fight will happen either next or after the title shot. But that fight will happen down the line.

My aim right now, my focus is to beat RDA Saturday night and then get to Usman, the rematch with Usman. But the Masvidal fight will happen.”

Do you think Edwards vs. Masvidal will happen? Or do you think RDA will deliver a first loss in eight fights for the Briton and put a wrench in those plans?

UFC San Antonio goes down tomorrow night (Sat. July 20, 2019) from the AT&T Center in Texas.

In the main event of the night, welterweights Rafael dos Anjos, a former lightweight champion, and Leon Edwards will go head-to-head. The up-and-coming Edwards will get to test himself against a former UFC champion in dos Anjos, who is one of the most well-rounded fighters under the promotion’s banner today.

Check out LowKickMMA’s UFC San Antonio staff predictions for the main event here below.

UFC San Antonio Staff Predictions:

Jon Fuentes:

This is undoubtedly the biggest fight of Edwards’ career. He’s taking on a former UFC lightweight champion that Dana White himself has admitted he uses as a measuring stick for up-and-coming talent. If Edwards wants to jump into title contention, a win over “RDA” is a must.

However, dos Anjos is a far superior grappler, and his pressure may be too much for Edwards to handle. Also, “RDA” has some serious knockout power, and if he’s able to land an overhand flush on “Rocky’s” chin, it might be a quick day at the office for him. The former champion is simply all-around superior to Edwards. I expect “RDA” to finish this one. (Prediction: Rafael dos Anjos)

Abhinav Kini:

Rafael dos Anjos is arguably the toughest opponent Leon Edwards will have faced (considering he faced Kamaru Usman back in 2015), and a win over the former lightweight champion would not only make it eight-straight wins for “Rocky,” but also move him into title contention.

That said, “RDA” really impressed me with his win over Kevin Lee, and he’ll be a considerably big step up from Gunnar Nelson. Edwards is dangerous in the clinch and is a good all-rounder in general, but dos Anjos is as well, maybe even better in all areas too. He might not have the youth, but I still think RDA takes this one. (Prediction: Rafael dos Anjos)

Andrew Ravens:

I question how much “RDA” can be trusted to be favored in this fight against such a young lion in Edwards, who has been making a name for himself in the welterweight division.

Dos Anjos has been struggling in his latest outings, and with such a hungry Edwards coming into the biggest fight thus far in his MMA career, I find it hard to think that “RDA” can out-class him. The Brazilian must finish early to get the win, and I don’t see that. I’m taking Edwards in a dominating decision win. (Prediction: Leon Edwards)

Brady Briggs:

This is a great matchup between two of the best in the world at 170 pounds. We have one of the most experienced and well-rounded fighters out there in Rafael dos Anjos, and a really talented former BAMMA champion trying to crack the top ten, who’s on a seven-fight win streak. The former champion has the experience edge, and has overall fought better opponents, and in higher profile situations. Rafael dos Anjos via decision. (Prediction: Rafael dos Anjos)

Cole Shelton:

“RDA” was counted out in the welterweight division after two losses to Usman and Covington. And the recipe to beat him was pressure and wrestling, yet, that is the opposite of what Edwards does well. I think dos Anjos will be able to push the pace, use his grappling, and win by decision to snap the Englishman’s long winning streak. (Prediction: Rafael dos Anjos)

Tomorrow night (Sat. July 20, 2019) we have a great night of fights at UFC San Antonio, ending with a stellar welterweight matchup between former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and former BAMMA welterweight champion Leon Edwards.

This is going to be a great matchup to see where each athlete is at in their respective careers. “RDA” is 4-2 since moving up to welterweight, and Edwards is on a seven-fight win streak at 170 pounds.

The former lightweight champion has been in the UFC since 2008, and has really fought the who’s who of contenders at both 155 and 170 pounds. “Rocky” came into the UFC with an 8-1 record, with his only loss via disqualification. He went 2-2 in his first two UFC fights, before racking up seven straight wins in one of mixed martial arts’ (MMA’s) deepest divisions. Edwards is five inches taller and will have a four inch reach advantage, but dos Anjos is no stranger to being the smaller man.

Dos Anjos is one of the most well-rounded mixed martial artists out there. His only kryptonite has been with the best wrestlers in the sport. He does well against fairly respected wrestlers. However, when he fights elite wrestlers, he generally has troubles. Dos Anjos’ last two losses at lightweight were against Eddie Alvarez and Tony Ferguson; both are wrestlers, neither are the best at it.

Cutting to lightweight got to be too much for him. His last loss at lightweight before that was to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and his two most recent losses were to Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington, three of the best in the sport.

Edwards does not have a wrestling heavy game. He generally picks his shots and doesn’t take too many unnecessary chances. This is why many of “Rocky’s” wins are decisions, and a few that aren’t were ended in round three after he waited long enough to see an opening. An example of this would be his fights with Albert Tumenov and Peter Sobotta.

“Rocky” was doing well in the Sobotta fight throughout, but just didn’t see much margin to take a chance until the end of round three, where he has tied the record for the latest finish ever in a three-round fight. The Tumenov fight was very close, and the winner was ultimately determined by the third round.

The 27-year-old made sure it didn’t matter who out-scored who that round, as he sunk in the rear-naked choke and got the finish. Edwards also had two third-round finishes before coming to the UFC; one of which was when he won the BAMMA title, and the other was when he defended it.

The style clash in this fight is very interesting, because dos Anjos, like has been stated, has only really lost to the elite of wrestlers lately, and “Rocky” has looked nothing short of incredible his entire UFC career. Edwards’ only clear loss was to Kamaru Usman in his fourth UFC fight.

He lost a split decision to Claudio Silva in his UFC debut, which was a very close fight, and his only other defeat came via disqualification. To have your only dominant loss be to the UFC welterweight champion, a stud like Usman, and to have the resume of Edwards, inside and outside of the UFC, is very impressive.

Will dos Anjos be able to climb to 5-2 at welterweight, or will he fall to 4-3? Both of these men throw tons of volume and are very technically sound strikers. Both are also incredibly technically sound on the mat, especially third degree BJJ black belt dos Anjos. Lastly, both can also wrestle very well. This is such an exciting matchup between two of the best in the world at 170 pounds.
