Leon Edwards recently declared that he has no interest in settling his beef with Jorge Masvidal inside the Octagon. The streaking welterweight contender says he will instead wait for his shot a UFC gold.

‘Rocky’ is coming off a dominant decision win over Nate Diaz at UFC 263 in June. Edwards was wobbled in the fifth and final round of the fight but clearly believes that win was enough to secure him a long-overdue title shot.

“My next fight will be for the world title,” Edwards tweeted. “I don’t want to hear nothing about a guy coming off of a two-fight skid and got KO’d in his last fight.”

Masvidal took to social media to respond to Edwards’ post that was clearly referencing him.

“If you not gonna fight then keep my name out your p**sy a*s mouth you clout chasing biatch #supernecessary,” Masvidal wrote.

‘Gamebred’ has dropped to consecutive defeats against Kamaru Usman. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ scored a lopsided decision win when they fight fought before knocking Masvidal out in their second meeting.

The UFC fan favourite is now looking for his route back to the welterweight title and it appeared that a fight with Edwards was very much on the table until recently.

Gilbert Burns is another man trying to work his way back into title contention. The Brazilian submission specialist suffered a third-round knockout loss when he challenged Usman for the welterweight strap at UFC 258. ‘Durinho’ has since picked up an impressive three-round decision win over Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson but it appears he’ll need a least a couple more wins to earn another shot at the champ.

Burns took to social media to mock Edwards’ for refusing to fight Masvidal.

“Man this make zero sense to me,” Burns wrote on Twitter. “First the guy hit you with 3 pieces and a on your on country nothing happened. You being asking for this fight for years, last month you just did and now you turn the fight down it’s just me or this guy doesn’t like to fight? It’s crazy!”

Usman is set to defend his welterweight title against Colby Covington at UFC 268 on November 6.

So, Edwards is almost certainly out of action for the rest of 2021 waiting for a title shot he might not actually get.

Jorge Masvidal has reacted to Leon Edwards shutting down the idea of them meeting inside the Octagon.

There is unfinished business between Masvidal and Edwards. Back in 2019, Masvidal punched Edwards backstage following a UFC London event. Edwards has insisted that he’ll meet Masvidal again one day, whether inside the Octagon or on the streets. The bout has yet to materialize.

Ariel Helwani reported that the UFC was primed to make the fight happen in early 2022. Edwards seemingly poured cold on those plans with the following tweet.

“My next fight will be for the world title. I don’t want to hear nothing about a guy coming off [a] two-fight skid and got KO’d his last fight,” Edwards wrote.

Jorge Masvidal caught wind of Edwards’ response to Helwani’s report. He decided to send a not so friendly, yet “super necessary” message to “Rocky.”

“If you not gonna fight then keep my name out your p**sy a*s mouth you clout chasing biatch”

Edwards has received some criticism for shutting down a bout with Masvidal. Top-ranked welterweight Gilbert Burns ripped Edwards on social media.

“You are scared! You call Masvidal out now you don’t want to fight. You call me out only when I have a title shot, now [you’re] ducking! You are fake. Man this [makes] zero sense to me. First the guy hit you with three-piece and a soda [in] your own country, nothing happened. You been asking for this fight for years, last month you just did and now you turn the fight down. Man [is it] just me or this guy doesn’t like to fight? It’s crazy!”

Edwards is the number three-ranked UFC welterweight. Masvidal sits at the number six spot. Masvidal is coming off a second-round knockout loss to UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman in their rematch. Edwards has gone 9-0, 1 NC in his last 10 outings.

In another twist in the Leon Edwards/Jorge Masvidal saga, Edwards is now adamant that his next fight will be for the world title.

Ever since the viral “three-piece and a soda” that Jorge Masvidal served Leon Edwards in 2019, fans have latched on to the idea of the two settling their beef in the cage instead of on the streets. Naturally, no one wanted the match more than Edwards himself after being assaulted for the world to see. Unfortunately for the Brit, he was unable to gain Masvidal’s interest in putting the fight together. Whenever Edwards’ name was brought up to “Gamebred,” his response was typically one that claimed he already defeated Edwards.

Two years and two consecutive losses later, Masvidal finally opened the door to a bout against Edwards. While Masvidal did not single Edwards out, he was one of the names that Masvidal pinpointed as someone who could get him back in the title picture with a win. Edwards volunteered his services during this July exchange, stating that he would be ready to roll in November or December.

Leon Edwards Changes Tone Despite The UFC’s Plans

Dana White has also expressed an interest in putting a grudge match between Masvidal and Edwards together. And according to MMA reporter Ariel Helwani, the UFC was looking to finally book the fight sometime in early 2022 once Masvidal meets with the UFC brass in the near future.

However, in a Wednesday social media post, Edwards changed his tone and firmly put his foot down on what would need to be at stake in his fight.

“My next fight will be for the world title. I don’t want to hear nothing about a guy coming off 2-fight skid and god KO’d his last fight,” Edwards wrote.

Leon Edwards is currently enjoying a nine-fight winning streak (one no contest), with his most recent bout being a victory over Nate Diaz at UFC 263 in June. Meanwhile, Masvidal’s most recent victory also came over Diaz, only this was two years ago. To Edwards’ point, Masvidal has since been defeated by welterweight champion Kamaru Usman on back-to-back occasions, the second loss coming by way of second-round KO.

Is this the right play by Leon Edwards?

Leon Edwards Mocks Idea of Jorge Masvidal Fight, Waiting for Title Shot

Leon Edwards

UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards apparently has zero interest in a potential No. 1 contender fight with Jorge Masvidal and is willing to play the waiting game for a rematch against Kamaru Usman for the welterweight belt.

Edwards is fresh off his largely impressive win over Nate Diaz at UFC 263 earlier this year, surviving a late barrage to secure a unanimous decision victory. It has been quite a battle back to fighting for Edwards, who fought to a no-contest against Belal Muhammad in his first fight in nearly two years back in March.

Edwards and Masvidal have had their fair share of history in the past, stemming from their post-fight brawl following UFC Fight Night 147 in London. Both fighters won their bouts and proceeded to engage in trash talk which escalated into an all-out melee backstage.

Despite the obvious fan interest that an Edwards vs. Masvidal fight would generate, Edwards isn’t very keen on the idea of that happening next for his fighting career.

“My next fight will be for the world title,” Edwards tweeted. “I don’t want to hear nothing about a guy coming off of a two-fight skid and got KO’d in his last fight.”

Edwards is obviously alluding to Masvidal’s back-to-back losses to Usman, most notably his knockout defeat to Usman at UFC 261. Masvidal hasn’t fought since but is anticipating and planning for a return to the octagon before year’s end, although nothing is currently in the works.

Edwards will likely have to wait quite a bit as Usman will fight Colby Covington in a title rematch at UFC 268. He’s also in the middle of a title hunt which includes the surging Vicente Luque along with former title challenger Gilbert Burns.

Edwards remains one of the top welterweight contenders and will assumingly get a title shot sooner rather than later.
