Top UFC Welterweight contenders Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards are once again back at it on social media. Masvidal told MMA Junkie this week that he’s targeting a December return against “anyone that gets me to the title again.”
Edwards responded on Twitter saying he’d be ready in “November or December. Stop with the excuses.” Edwards and Masvidal have plenty of verbal sparring history and a backstage altercation after Masvidal’s KO win over Darren Till in March 2019. They have yet to meet in the octagon however.
There is certainly some steam for a matchup between these welterweight contenders. It would make logical booking sense for these two to serve as the Co-Main event in November’s UFC 268 Welterweight championship main event between Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington.

Leon Edwards may have picked up the biggest win of his career at UFC 263 but it didn’t come easy.
‘Rocky’ bossed the majority of his five-round fight against Nate Diaz back in June.
The Englishman was forced to show a ton of heart in the final frame when he was rocked by Diaz.
The Stockton, California native swarmed but was unable to find the finishing blow.
Edwards made it to the final bell and ultimately walked away with a lopsided decision win.
During a recent appearance on The James English podcast, Edwards revealed his mother had a hilarious reaction to seeing him get rocked at UFC 263.
“She’s a proper Jamaican, Jamaican, you know,” Edwards said. “She was watching (the fight) when I got rocked by (Nate) Diaz. When I came back, I was like ‘Mum, what did you do?’. Like what happened when (I was rocked)? She was like ‘I opened the window and started screaming ‘help!’”

Unfortunately, Mrs. Edwards may have to see her son in a few more compromising positions as the fights only get tougher from here on out. ‘Rocky’ is currently riding a long winning streak and appears to be on the cusp of a welterweight title shot. The current 170lb king Kamaru Usman is set to defend his crown against Colby Covington later this year. In the meantime, potential fights between Edwards, Gilbert Burns, and Jorge Masvidal are being discussed.

Gilbert Burns has yet to hear back from any of the men he recently called out, and he’s getting tired of waiting.
Burns returned to the win column at UFC 264 with a unanimous decision victory over Stephen Thompson. While it was far from a standout performance, Burns did what he needed to do to get the victory over a top contender. Following the win, he used his post-fight interview to list off a list of names he wanted to face next.
Two weeks later, he’s yet to get a reply from Leon Edwards, Jorge Masvidal or Nate Diaz.
Apparently growing tired of waiting for anyone to respond, Burns took to Twitter to call them out again.

In a crowded welterweight division, it would be easy for a fighter to get lost in all the commotion, so it’s probably a good idea for Burns to keep his name floating out there. That being said, all 3 of the men he’s looking for fights against have made it clear they’re only interested in title shots or fights that will promise big financial gain. Despite being a former title contender, Burns isn’t either of those.
Still, you can’t blame him for shooting his shot. And, given that there’s only so many fighters that can fight for the title at once, Burns is bound to face a top contender at some point.
The only question is, will he get his wish and have the fight happen sooner rather than later?
