UFC Fight Night 122 emanated today (Saturday, November 25, 2017) from the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai, China. The UFC Fight Pass show was headlined by a middleweight showdown between former title-holder and late replacement Michael Bisping and up-and-coming finisher Kelvin Gastelum.

Gastelum took care of business in emphatic and devastating fashion, knocking Bisping senseless with a left hook in the very first round. Gastelum was one of four men to pocket an extra $50,000 for their Performance of the Night efforts.

Co-headliner Li Jingliang also took home a bonus check for his first-round knockout of Zak Ottow in his home country. This time, it was a right hand through the guard that dropped the loser, and Jingliang swarmed with relentless ground and pound until the referee had seen enough. “The Leech” had the feel-good moment of the night as he ran into the crowd to kiss his wife and infant daughter, and he’ll go home $50k richer as well.

In the featured prelim and perhaps the most highly anticipated bout of the night, Zabit Magomedsharipov confirmed himself as more than a flashy kicker, but a bonafide blue-chip prospect. He ran a clinic on the tough and talented Sheymon Moraes, making his debut as the biggest underdog on the card. Magomedsharipov largely negated Moraes’ dangerous Muay Thai striking, taking him down at will and running a grappling clinic. Seemingly on a whim, the Dagestani finished Moraes with an anaconda choke in the third round. He, too, will have an extra $50,000 in his bank account come Monday morning.

Finally, 19-year-old Chinese featherweight prospect Song Yadong dominated Indian wrestler Bharat Kandare and finished him in the first round. Kandare never got in range to utilize his takedowns. Yadong pressured and landed heavy punches whenever his Indian counterpart threw. Yadong closed the show with a step-in right hand that floored his adversary, and when Kandare shot in for a desperate takedown, Yadong snatched a guillotine. The youngest fighter on the UFC roster will take home a nice payday with his $50,000 bonus check.

UFC Fight Night 111 went down today (Saturday, June 17, 2017) from Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. The main event saw former bantamweight champion Holly Holm looking to right the ship against former title challenger Bethe Correia. She got back on the winning track in sudden and vicious fashion.

After a painfully uneventful first two rounds – toward the end of which referee Marc Goddard warned the combatants for inactivity – Holm got back in the win column with a highlight-reel knockout. Early in the third round, a question mark kick fooled Correia into blocking the body while Holm’s shin came up around her guard to land flush across her face. One follow-up punch iced the Brazilian completely, forcing Goddard to intervene on her behalf. Holm pocketed an extra $50,000 for her Performance of the Night.

The second Performance of the Night went to Japanese flyweight Ulka Sasaki, who got a stunning come-from-behind victory on the undercard. Facing the dynamic but inconsistent Justin Scoggins, Sasaki was taking a beating through the first round and a half. He had been dropped twice and pounded on from top position by the South Carolinian. A momentary lapse was all it took for Sasaki to capitalize, as he did not miss when he had his chance on Scoggins’ back. He slapped on a rear-naked choke and the tap came shortly after. Sasaki will leave Singapore $50,000 richer for it.

The Fight of the Night was also on the prelims, as welterweight sluggers Li Jingliang and Frank Camacho went to war. UFC newcomer Camacho repeatedly rocked “The Leech” in round one, looking on the verge of finishing it on multiple occasions. Only Li’s granite chin saved him. Camacho – a late replacement who fought just three weeks ago – started to fade as the cage time and the punishment began to mount. Li nearly finished “The Crank” in the third as leg kicks and hard punches upstairs took their toll, but Camacho gutted it out to hear the final horn. Both men were awarded an extra $50,000 for their spirited efforts.

One former welterweight prospect and a slew of other UFC fighters have been cut from the world’s leading MMA promotion.

Brandon Thatch, who just a few years ago was a highly touted prospect, is among the ten fighters who were given their walking papers this week, according to UFC Fighters Info.

Nate Diaz’s friend and training partner Chris Avila is also one of the names dashed from the UFC’s roster, after having lost his Octagon debut against Artem Lobov at UFC 202.

The remaining fighters who were cut this week are:

  • Li Jingliang
  • Yusuke Kayusa
  • Felipe Olivieri
  • Jason Novelli
  • J.C. Cottrell
  • Nicholas Dalby
  • Eric Montano
  • Dong-yi Yang

Thatch had entered the UFC with a 9-1 record back in 2013 before picking up two quick victories in th Octagon. The Coloradan fell in his last four fights, losing to Benson Henderson, Gunner Nelson, Siyar Bahadurzara, and most recently Niko Price at UFC 207.

Jingliang remains a top prospect out of China, and had picked up a respectable 4-2 record inside the Octagon before having his name removed from the UFC’s online roster.

However, Jingliang is coming off of a second round knockout victory over Bobby Nash in January, meaning his contract could have been up and he just hasn’t signed a new one with the UFC yet.

With the UFC trimming it’s roster in recent months, this appears to be the latest purge of fighters who will now have to work their way back into the UFC.
