In the UFC Uruguay main event, women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko puts her title on the line against Liz Carmouche.

Round 1:

Carmouche lands a nice leg kick after a lengthy feeling-out process. Shevchenko responds with one of her own. “The Bullet” comes inside with a nice combination and Carmouche responds with a kick to the body. Pretty uneventful first round comes to an end.

Round 2:

Shevchenko lands a nice right hand as Carmouche steps inside. She starts to turn the volume up just a bit. A front kick to the body connects for Shevchenko. Carmouche shoots in on a takedown and Shevchenko defends it very nicely. A leg kick lands for Shevchenko.

A nice combination from Shevchenko, but the only significant strike that lands is the leg kick at the end. Shevchenko rips off a nice spinning back-first and follows it up with some nice shots. The round comes to an end.

Round 3:

Carmouche lands a nice kick to the body. Shevchenko lands a left hand at the end of a combination. She also gets a nice leg kick in as well. A lot of leg kicks and feints from both women throughout the fight. It has been pretty uneventful for the most part. Shevchenko uncorks a big combination that drops Carmouche, but Shevchenko is unwilling to meet her on the canvas.

The referee stands Carmouche up. Shevchenko strikes into the pocket, they lock up, and Shevchenko uses Carmouche’s weight against her to get top position as they fall to the canvas. Short shots are exchanged by both women on the ground to end the round.

Round 4:

A very nice combination connects for Shevchenko. Carmouche stumbles on her way in on a takedown and Shevchenko pounces on top of her. Carmouche has Shevchenko in mission control, mixing in heel shots to Shevchenko’s rear. Position battling for the most part on the ground. The referee breaks up the action and returns them to the feet.

A spinning back-fist drops Carmouche as she comes in, and Shevchenko has a front lock on Carmouche on the ground. Shevchenko threatens a choke to get her way into side control. Carmouche gets half guard beautifully. The round comes to an end.

Round 5:

Leg kicks are exchanged and the fight gets tossed to the ground again with Shevchenko into Carmouche’s full guard. Shevchenko grinds away at Carmouche, working her against the cage. Not much action going on, just position battling and short shots from both women. Shevchenko passes into half guard and lands a nice elbow. Shevchenko is desperately trying to pass into full mount but can’t do it. Shevchenko postures up, lands some shots, and stands on her feet to end the round and fight.

Official Result: Valentina Shevchenko def. Liz Carmouche via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

UFC Uruguay Staff Predictions

Jon Fuentes:

A lot of people seem to be overlooking Carmouche’s wrestling in this fight. While I don’t think it will ultimately be enough to dethrone Shevchenko, I do believe it will make the fight much closer than everyone is expecting. With that being said, Shevchenko has great takedown defense, an underrated submission game, and proven finishing power. She can win this fight any way she wants to, but I expect she leaves Uruguay with a unanimous or split decision win. (Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko)

Abhinav Kini:

I think this will be closer than people have come to expect, but that said, Valentina Shevchenko is still miles above anyone in the 125-pound division. She may have lost to Liz Carmouche back in 2010, but nine years is a long time and I expect “Bullet” – who has continued to grow better and better as a mixed martial artist – to convincingly win the rematch with possibly another finish. (Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko)

Andrew Ravens:

I find it hard to think that Liz Carmouche is someone who could realistically beat Valentina Shevchenko outside of a shock finish, whether it’s KO or submission. Valentina is clearly the best fighter in the division, and the only fighter who could/has beaten her is Amanda Nunes. I have Valentina winning in a dominant performance by unanimous decision (Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko)

Brady Briggs:

Shevchenko has only ever lost to two people. One of those losses was a doctor stoppage (to Carmouche), one was a three-round unanimous decision to Amanda Nunes, and the other was a five-round split decision to Nunes. Both of her Nunes fights were close. If the first one had two more rounds, she most likely would’ve won that one, and most people think she won their title fight rematch.

For being a 56-2 kickboxer, you really wouldn’t expect her to be so well rounded, but she is. Shevchenko’s ground game is very underrated; her body lock trips are some of the best around and she even has a submission (armbar) win over Julianna Pena, who’s a stud grappler.

That’s where Carmouche needs the fight in order to win. Carmouche has some very good wrestling. I don’t think what she brings to the table will be enough, however. Shevchenko can win this fight in multiple ways. I could see her outpointing Carmouche to a decision, I could see her submitting her, and I could see her winning via knockout. (Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko)

Cole Shelton:

Valentina Shevchenko looks like someone who will be a champion for a long time. She has all the skillset to take the fight wherever she wants, but it will be interesting to see how she handles Carmouche’s strength and power. I expect this fight to be much closer than everyone expects but Shevchenko will win by decision (Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko)

Liz Carmouche doesn’t view flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko as an unstoppable machine ahead of UFC Uruguay on Saturday.

Shevchenko has dominated the opposition since moving to her natural weight class at 125 pounds. She comfortably defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk via unanimous decision to win the vacant title. “Bullet” then defended the belt for the first time with a vicious head kick knockout of Jessica Eye.

But for former bantamweight title challenger Carmouche, some perspective is required:

“I think you have to really take things into perspective,” Carmouche told MMA Fighting. “If you look at Joanna, she moved up simply for this fight and then went right back down to her weight class. So she was mismatched because she was in the wrong weight class, didn’t even have to worry about cutting weight so already there’s going to be a strength advantage. Add to that, they’d already faced each other three or four times in Muay Thai and [Joanna] had been defeated. In my eyes, she stood no chance so really just scrap that fight and look at the Jessica Eye fight.

“Unfortunately [the fight with Eye] went exactly how I expected. Actually I thought it would happen in the first round instead of the second. So you can really go off of one fight and to me that doesn’t really show someone that’s unstoppable or has this mystique around them that they should be someone to be feared.”

Carmouche actually holds a win over Shevchenko. However, that was nine years ago and only because of a doctor stoppage. And while she’s a big betting underdog, Carmouche hopes Shevchenko realizes it won’t be an easy day at the office:

“I’ve been having like one fight a year because I tell them I want to fight more and people say ‘we don’t really want to fight Liz because even if we win, we’re going to pay for it, we’re going to have to take six months to recover’,” Carmouche added. “As much as it might be a win on your record, it’s not a win.

“So I’m hoping that she has that same thought in her mind. It isn’t going to be an easy fight and I hope she has it in her mind as such.”

Who do you think takes the UFC Uruguay main event?
