Bellator president Scott Coker believes Lorenz Larkin is next in line for Douglas Lima.

Larkin made it four wins in a row following his unanimous decision win over Keita Nakamura at Bellator Japan on Saturday. Michael Page, meanwhile, also competed on the card as he made it three wins in a row following his knockout of Shinsho Anzai.

Both fighters have campaigned to get the next welterweight title shot at Lima but it’s Larkin who will probably win the race according to Coker:

“To me, I think the fight that we would like to see is Lorenz fight Lima, because he hasn’t fought him before,” Coker said (via MMA Junkie). “But I’d also like to see Lorenz fight ‘MVP,’ too. So, we’ll see. We’re going to mix it up and have some fun with that weight class.”

Lima notably handed Page his first-ever career loss when he knocked him out en route to regaining the Bellator welterweight title. The Brazilian also believes “MVP” needs a step up in competition before thinking of a rematch.

As for Larkin, he is yet to face Lima and although he notably missed weight against Nakamura, Coker is willing to give him a pass:

“We can look past that,” Coker added. “He came a long way and it’s not an easy task. I think that the flight, the trip, it’s just a different environment. I think in the timeframe that was different, that had a lot to do with it.

“The guy has fought – I don’t know his record offhand – but I think in 24 fights he has never missed weight. So we’ve got to give him a pass for that one.”

Do you think Larkin deserves the next shot?

New Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima’s first title defense looks set to be against Lorenz Larkin.

Lima regained the welterweight title after outpointing Rory MacDonald in the main event of Bellator 232 last night. As a result, he became a three-time champion and also won the million dollar prize from the welterweight grand prix.

And despite what would seem to be the ideal choice in making a trilogy fight between Lima and MacDonald, Bellator president Scott Coker believes Larkin will be next in line:

“We’re going to be taking Larkin to Japan to fight on the 29th on our show,” Coker said in the Bellator 232 post-fight press conference (via BJ Penn). “They’re still working out the opponent but he will be fighting and representing Bellator against Rizin. So he’ll be busy there.

“I think Douglas Lima would probably like to take a couple of months off and then we’ll figure it out. But I think Larkin, unless he loses in Japan, he’s probably the No. 1 guy in that slot.”

Larkin faced Lima for the welterweight title back in 2017 but would lose a unanimous decision. Since then, “The Monsoon” would go 3-1 with his most recent victory coming against former champion Andrey Koreshkov earlier this month.

Provided he wins his next outing, he looks set to get another chance at defeating Lima and becoming a world champion.

Do you think Larkin should get the next shot at Lima?

Jorge Masvidal’s rise in 2019 has been a phenomenal one and Lorenz Larkin for one, is “pumped” for his old foe.

After going on a two-fight losing streak in 2017, Masvidal has now won two in a row — both in emphatic fashion with brutal knockouts of Darren Till and Ben Askren. His popularity has risen as a result as “Gamebred” now headlines UFC 244 against Nate Diaz for the BMF belt in Madison Square Garden, New York.

And all the love and popularity he’s getting makes Larkin — who defeated Masvidal via split decision back in 2016 — happy for him:

“When I see Jorge (Masvidal) getting all the love now, I’m pumped for him,” Larkin told MMA Junkie. “I’m happy for him. It kind of shows that this MMA game, you can be on top of it, on bottom of it. It’s so funny: All it takes is one fight, and the analogy is so real as far as when people say you’re as good as your last fight, and that’s how MMA is. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, you’re as good as your last fight.”

Masvidal Finally Getting Recognition

It’s taken a long time for Masvidal to become popular with the fans. After all, he’s been competing since 2003 and has faced a number of big names throughout his career.

For Larkin, Masvidal never got the recognition from the mainstream audience until that knockout of Askren:

“There aren’t even too many people who knew about Masvidal like that,” Larkin added. “People who really follow MMA do. Casual fans, they don’t know who Masvidal is. All it took is that one knockout. It’s just so crazy.

Something like that could change your life. He’s been putting in the work for so long, and just fighting so many good guys, that it took a knee to get him the paycheck now that he deserves. It’s crazy.”

What do you think of Masvidal’s rise?
