Madison Square GardenNEW YORK — Inside one of the world’s most famous sports arenas, the UFC for the first time clearly and publicly stated its intent to help promote mixed martial arts sanctioning in the state of New York and produce an event at Madison Square Garden as soon as possible.

While the Empire State has always been one of the promotion’s biggest targets, it remains one of the last holdouts in the US; 44 of the 48 states with athletic commissions sanction MMA. With a renewed commitment to getting the sport regulated, the UFC hopes to run an event as soon as late 2011, and promised two events in the state within a year of sanctioning.

“I honestly think it’s happening,” said UFC president Dana White, who made the announcement. “Look who’s represented today. All the people we talk to, from politicians to Madison Square Garden and the list goes on and on. Was New York tougher than every other place? Absolutely. But I feel like we’re right there. We’ve done a great job. Ten years of nothing but success and safety and continuing to grow the sport. I think we’re right there in New York. We’re ready to grow the sport and make it happen.”

UFC held a press conference in New York City’s Madison Square Garden to announce their commitment to hold two annual UFC events in New York, once the sport is regulated in the state. Dana White and Zuffa CEO, Lorenzo Fertitta sat alongside, Jersey’s own Frankie Edgar who is the current UFC Lightweight Champion and Scott O’Neil, President of Madison Square Garden Sports to reveal their plans for New York and present an in depth economic study they’ve performed which shows the positive impact MMA events would have on the city. A press release from the UFC promotion stated:

The study found that holding two UFC events in the state (one at Madison Square Garden and one in Buffalo) will create roughly $16 million in new spending. Additionally, the study found smaller MMA operators will likely hold events that would bring an additional $4 million. In total, $23 million of annual new spending and hundreds of new jobs will be created in the local economy by regulating MMA.

Lorenzo Fertitta went on to say “We’ve done similar economic studies in major cities such as Boston, Las Vegas and Philadelphia and each showed the substantial positive impact hosting a UFC event has on the local economy. This study shows that by regulating MMA, New York can reap the economic benefits statewide.”

Although calling the announcement  "a monumental one" may have been a bit of an overstatement, the UFC announced today at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro today that it would be returning to Brazil for the first time since Zuffa bought the organization in 2000 and only the second time ever August 27, 2011.

UFC president Dana White made the announcement of the yet-to-be named event in Rio city hall alongside Zuffa CEO Lorenzo Fertitta,  mayor Eduardo Paes and Brazilian UFC luminaries Royce Gracie, Anderson Silva, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Vitor Belfort and Jose Aldo.

Although he would not commit to naming names of Brazilian fighters who will likely appear on the card because the event is more than eight months away and injuries may change the planned card several times between now and then, White intimated that all of the currently contracted fighters at the presser and guys like Demian Maia, Junior Dos Santos and Wanderlei Silva are all being considered for the card.
