Yet another high-profile UFC main event fell apart yesterday (Tues., May 17, 2016) when news came that former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman had been forced out of his rematch with Luke Rockhold in the main event of June 4’s UFC 199 from Inglewood, California, with an undisclosed injury.

It was the fourth title fight that Weidman had pulled out of in the last 25 months, and it understandably lead to a considerable backlash for his latest main event cancellation, which the UFC has experienced in droves in the first half of 2016. However, Weidman addressed the injury on his Facebook page today, describing how he never would have pulled out of the fight but had a serious neck injury:

“I just wanna let my fans know as many details as possible about what happened to me because I want them involved as much as possible. It’s the least I can do to give back for all the love and support I have received now and over the years.

To all the people bad-mouthing me right now, I understand it and you’re entitled to your opinion. Just wanna make sure you know this is a fight I refused to pull out of no matter what. I was never in better shape, more healthy, motivated, confident and excited for a fight in my life. I also felt I was the best fighter I have ever been and made some great improvements.

Since my high-school wrestling days, my neck, every once in a while, would get stiff. Every athlete who has been competing in any sport experiences this, but it usually goes away pretty quickly in a day or two. It never has been a real problem for me or slowed me down.

So, I recently sparred on a Thursday night and nothing drastic at all happened during sparring. After sparring, my neck was fine and our team actually discussed afterwards how good I was feeling as a fighter. The next morning, I happened to wake up with a stiff neck and with a little nerve pain in my neck and arm but figured it go away in a day or two. Like I said, I’m used to this pain. So I went on with my workouts on Friday and actually felt relatively good. It got a little more serious Friday night and Saturday morning.

Friday night, I couldn’t sleep or get comfortable and went from my bed to my daughter’s to my son’s then to the couch, just trying anything to get comfortable. When I finally woke up on Saturday, which is a sparring day, I had severe vertigo which I never experience before. I was losing my balance and not walking straight and the neck was worse then ever. So I got scared and ended up going to an urgent care where they sent me to get a MRI. I then found out I had a large extrusion herniation, which was stuck on a nerve that shuts down the tricep and forearm area. So I figured I could get an epidural and I would be good and there was zero chance in my head I was pulling out.

The first spine specialist I went to in NYC was blown away by the size of it and told me he wasn’t very optimistic about an injection for me and thought surgery was the way to go, but I just figured he’s a surgeon and let him know about how big this fight is and that there is zero chance I’m backing out and getting a surgery. So he sent me to a specialist who does injections, and by looking at MRI images, agreed that the chances of epidural relieving that nerve pain would be minimal, but I was still optimistic and thought either way I’m fighting through this.

So a few days pass until I could get approved for the injection, so I just continued doing cardio and whatever I could to work around the neck until they could get me in for that epidural.

After finally getting the epidural, nothing changed. During this time I couldn’t sleep or get through any regular-day activity with the pain I was experiencing. I actually felt my best when I was working out but I couldn’t survive throughout the day and night without painkillers and other medication to try to block nerve pain. I had another epidural scheduled for this Thursday but the doctors said again that it most likely wouldn’t make a difference. I still planned on fighting until yesterday when my coaches and loved ones really just put their foot down. The people I trusted most were not behind me fighting and pushing through. So before getting the second epidural I decided to give the UFC a fair amount of time to find another opponent for Luke. This was obviously a fight bigger than any for me and I trained harder and smarter then ever but apparently GOD has other plans for me.

I am being told I’m going to need surgery. Either they take the disc out or they fuse it and I have to meet with surgeons today to figure out what they will do. The good thing is it is c6-7 which is low in the neck, so I will have full range of motion either way and will be back better then ever. I’m told it’s six-to-eight week recovery for
the disc coming out and twelve weeks for a fusion. Even though it’s very hard for me to see a bright side right now, the one silver lining I’m focused on is the timetable would allow me to fight on that NY card in November.

I want to apologize to my family, friends, coaches, management, sponsors, fans, the UFC, and of course, Luke for letting you guys down. I promise I’ll be back and I will get that belt back. I also want to publicly thank everyone close to me for their unconditional love and support, and especially thank my physical therapists and doctors for all of their great help.

Thanks for the support and love you all.”

Based on his description, it doesn’t sound like an injury Weidman could have fought through and will disappointingly keep him on the sidelines for yet another lengthy amount of time.

When he returns, his title shot may or may not be waiting for him, but as of now the show must go on as the UFC searches for a late replacement to face Rockhold on the Southern California card.

Unfortunate news broke earlier today (May 17, 2016) revealing that former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman had suffered an injury and was being forced out of his scheduled June 4th rematch with Luke Rockhold.

Rockhold dethroned Weidman last December, and the two were set to run it back in the main event of the upcoming UFC 199 card from Inglewood, California.

It has been reported that the UFC is actively looking for a replacement to fight Rockhold, but that may be tough on just a few weeks’ notice.

A few fighters have thrown their names into the hat, however, as No. 4-ranked Michael “The Count” Bisping and No. 10-ranked Uriah Hall both took to their respective Twitter accounts to campaign for the fight:

Derek Brunson and Tim Kennedy expressed their interest as well:

Rockhold and Bisping have actually met before with the champion coming away with a submission victory over “The Count” back in 2014. Bisping has since won three-straight and is coming off of the biggest victory of his lengthy career: a February decision over Anderson Silva.

Hall, on the other hand, was slated to meet Silva at this past weekend’s (May 14, 2016) UFC 198 from Brazil, but “The Spider” was forced to withdraw with an injury that required surgery.

Bisping also took a jab at some of the downed 185-pounders, implying that the stricter drug testing under USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) may have something to do with the injuries:

Who you would you like to step up and meet Rockhold?

Chris Weidman Injured, Out of UFC 199 Bout With Luke Rockhold [SHOCKED FACE]

In a dramatic twist that would shock even the most seasoned MMA fan, word has it that Chris Weidman — as in the previously unbreakable, punch-a-hole-in-your-f*cking-chest Chris Weidman — has been forced to pull out of his UFC 199-scheduled rematch with Luke Rockhold due to an injury suffered in training.

We know what you’re thinking, and yes, this is probably the end of the physical world as we know it.

Details after the jump.

We know what you’re thinking, and yes, this is probably the end of the physical world as we know it.

Details after the jump.

News of Weidman’s undisclosed injury was first broke by Talk MMA, then later confirmed by MMAFighting.

Now just two weeks out from UFC 199, the UFC is currently pursuing a last second replacement opponent to meet Rockhold in the main event. The obvious choice would seem to be Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, who aside from racking up 6 wins against 1 loss in the UFC and handing Vitor Belfort his ass on a silver platter at UFC 198 last weekend, also happens to have a bit of history with Rockhold — the pair first met at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov back in 2011, where the then-champion Souza was defeated by Rockhold via unanimous decision.

Of course, there is also another fitting option for Rockhold: Michael Bisping, who has rattled off three straight wins in the middleweight division since suffering a second round submission loss to Rockhold at Fight Night 55 in 2014. For what it’s worth, Bisping seems more than up for the challenge.

Personally, we’d like to see the UFC go a little off-book and pit all three of these guys against each other in a TLC match — which in MMA, translates to “Toe Holds, Leg Kicks, and Crucifixions” — as a way of making up for the untimely falling out of their main event, but we’re sure that stupid things like “regulation” and “fighter safety” will prevent that from ever happening. This PC culture, man, let me tell you. It’s ruining everything that was once pure about this sport.

In any case, we’ll make sure to keep you updated when a replacement opponent for Weidman is announced. In the meantime, let’s all enjoy this video of Weidman in his natural habitat…

According to a report via FloCombat, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman has been forced out of his scheduled UFC 199 title rematch against Luke Rockhold due to an injury.

The report surfaced on Twitter earlier this afternoon from TalkMMA:

The report was later confirmed by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.

Weidman (13-1) suffered his first professional MMA defeat after being finished by Rockhold in their co-main event bout at UFC 194 back in December.

Weidman won the title back in July of 2013 when he defeated the former middleweight king Anderson Silva in dramatic fashion at UFC 162.

Rockhold (13-1) is a former Strikeforce middleweight champion who has amassed an impressive UFC resume that includes finishes of names such as Michael Bisping, Lyoto Machida, and now Chris Weidman.

The two men have gone back-and-forth at one another over the past few months leading up to their expected clash in June during media events and interviews.

It is not yet know who will replace Weidman, however, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza is coming off of an impressive first round finish of former title challenger Vitor Belfort in Brazil at UFC 198 this past Saturday night. The No. 2-Ranked middleweight would be an excellent replacement, as the hungry ‘Jacare’ has claimed he is ready for a title shot.

‘Jacare’ and Rockhold have a history with one another, as the two men met under the Strikeforce banner back in 2011, where Rockhold won the middleweight championship from the Brazilian after a unanimous decision victory.

UFC 199 is set to go down at The Forum in Inglewood, California on Saturday June 4th, and is set to feature a bantamweight title bout in the co-main event between rivals Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.

UFC on FOX also confirmed the news shortly after it broke:
