Chris Weidman isn’t one to make excuses for himself inside the Octagon.

Weidman, a former UFC middleweight champion tried to keep from discussing the series of injuries he had entering UFC 194 in follow-up interviews. However, word eventually came out detailing a broken foot in two places that “The All-American” suffered weeks before he lost to Luke Rockhold.

Now, as Weidman (13-1) continues to push toward a rematch with Rockhold at UFC 199 later this year, he finds himself working just as hard to prove the naysayers wrong another time.

“I know what I’m capable of,” Weidman said, in a recent interview with MMAFighting.com. “I know my potential and I know I wasn’t close to it. The fact that because of what I’ve accomplished in the past gives me the opportunity to get a rematch is a great situation to be in. In most situations, people don’t get the second chance, especially right away. So, I’m very grateful for the opportunity I have. There’s no question in my mind that I’m gonna go out there and make a statement, completely dominate him and make sure everybody knows the last fight was a fluke.

“I knew what I was getting myself into, but I still thought I could go out there and beat (Rockhold). Even with that stuff. And he proved that I was wrong. He came out to fight. He was better than me that night.”

Weidman won the title when he finished Anderson Silva, defending it vs. Silva in a rematch and against former champions Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort before suffering his first career loss.

Luke Rockhold: Maybe Chris Weidman Is On His Period

The tension has seemed to grow greater between middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and ex-boss Chris Weidman ahead of their scheduled rematch at June’s UFC 199 from the L.A Forum in California.

The two previously met at last December’s UFC 194 with Rockhold scoring a fourth round finish to steal the title away from Weidman.

The champion believes that losing the belt has gotten under the skin of Weidman, also noting that while the New York native is a great fighter, he’s simply the best:

“Obviously not having the belt has got to him” Rockhold told reporters at a recent EA Sports media event (Via MMAJunkie) . “I don’t know where he’s coming from, he’s just really emotional – maybe he’s on his period or something. … He doesn’t look like himself. We’ll see if this emotion helps him. But to my knowledge emotion doesn’t help you fight.

“He better check himself or this fight’s going to be over a lot sooner than he expects, maybe than even I expect. I don’t feel threatened by Chris. I really don’t see what he’s going to bring to the table to blow me away. … He’s a great fighter, but I’m the best.”

As far as how the rematch will play out, Rockhold doesn’t see it being close at all like the first scrap was. The American Kickboxing Academy product is expecting to make it a quick night for Weidman:

“I think you’re going to see a different fight,” Rockhold said. “It’s going to be quick, it’s going to be fast, it’s going to be precise and I’m going to go in there and execute”

Do you see Rockhold retaining the title, or will Weidman end up back on top of the 185-pound throne?

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman didn’t play around when describing just how critical his rematch with Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 later this year is.

As you can see from the above message posted by “The All-American” on Twitter, he is taking the fight very seriously.

Weidman, who lost to Rockhold this past December, won the title with a victory over Anderson Silva. He followed that up by proving his win was no fluke, defeating “The Spider” for a second time. Successful title defenses vs. Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort followed before Rockhold rocked him.

Luke Rockhold: Yoel Romero “Doesn’t Do Himself Any Favors”

Yoel Romero was believed to be on his way to challenging for the UFC middleweight title before a drug test came back with concern from the USADA.

While Romero continues to fight to clean his name, current champion Luke Rockhold isn’t sure he’ll ever be able to view the former Olympic wrestler in the same light.

“We all have our suspensions and what’s what,” Rockhold said (thanks to MMAjunkie.com for the quotes). “But Yoel is just…the guy doesn’t do himself any favors. Any fight he has he goes out there and doesn’t perform, and then he shoots himself in the foot on the mic. This is a business.

“I’m not going to waste my time in my life to fight someone for pennies. Go out there and earn it. Make the people want it. I would love to shut you down. Then he gets tested for something. It’s laughable at this point.

“Who knows if he’s clean or not, if it’s a tainted supplement. We all know the truth. Come back because I’ll beat that ass, too.”

Rockhold is set to defend his title later this year at UFC 199 vs. former champion Chris Weidman.

Building off the highly palpable buzz of tomorrow night’s (Saturday, March 5, 2016) UFC 196, the world’s biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion will unveil the spring’s biggest fights and events in today’s ‘Unstoppable’ press conference from Las Vegas.

Scheduled to appear are former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and his arch rival, current champion Daniel Cormier, who will once again meet for the belt in the main event of April 23’s UFC 197. Also set to make an appearance are middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and former champion Chris Weidman, the world’s top two 185-pound fighters who are set to clash again in a rematch at June’s UFC 199. Rockhold battered Weidman in a fourth round TKO to seal the belt at December 2015’s UFC 194.
