Anthony Smith believes that the UFC is holding off on booking a Light Heavyweight title fight, because they want to see how his fight pans out first.
‘Lionheart‘ will be taking on Magomed Ankalaev this Saturday at UFC 277. Smith is currently the fifth ranked fighter in the division, while Ankalaev is the fourth ranked fighter and currently on an eight fight win streak.
Light Heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka, has recently accepted Glover Teixeira’s offer to run their title fight back, claiming that it wasn’t a good enough performance and he still had more to prove after their first fight. Smith doesn’t quite buy into that just yet.
Anthony Smith believes that this fight with Ankalaev will determine who the number one contender in the Light Heavyweight division is.
“[UFC President] Dana [White’s] already said that this is the No. 1 contender fight, so the winner gets a title shot, and I think the fact that they haven’t re-booked Glover and Jiri – or Jan Blachowicz vs. Jiri, I think that’s them waiting what happens with Ankalaev and I,” Smith said. “If we have a stinker and it sucks, I think they’ll slide one of those guys in. But if I think we go out and do what Ankalaev and I can do, I think the winner of this fight gets a title shot no matter what.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)
Smith claims that this fight will be a very competitive, fun fight to watch and not a “snoozer”. Smith challenged for the title back at UFC 235 in 2019. He lost that fight to Jon Jones in a one sided, five round beatdown. Since that loss, Smith has been on a tear, winning four of his last six fights. His only other defeats came by the hands of Glover Teixeira and Aleksander Rakic. Teixeira went on to become the oldest first time champion in UFC history, and Rakic looks like he may be a champion, or at the very least a top contender for the rest of his career.
A win for either Smith or Ankalaev may just get them a fight with Prochazka, but most likely will get them a fight with Jan Blachowicz in the near future. Only time will tell if Dana was true to his words, or if he will book Teixeira vs Prochazka once again.
UFC light heavyweight Anthony Smith has a bone to pick with the oddsmakers having seen the line for his upcoming fight against Magomed Ankalaev. At UFC 277 late next month, two top-five contenders will look to their stake their claim to the next title shot. Following Ji?í Procházka’s memorable crowning in Singapore, two options for…
Per BetOnline.ag, Ankalaev currently sits as a -450 favorite, with “Lionheart” carrying underdog status at +350. Reacting to those odds during an interview with The Schmo, Smith, a former title challenger, branded them as “criminal.”
“+350? Go get your money. +350? That’s crazy,” said Smith. “That’s criminal. Goddamn. You hear that? [gestures behind camera] +350. That is crazy. If I was fighting goddamn Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou at the same time, I (still) shouldn’t be f*cking +350, that’s crazy.”
52-fight veteran Smith has experienced the highs and lows in MMA and has shared the cage with the best during his time under the UFC banner.
Following a failed title bid against Jon Jones and quick rebound victory over Alexander Gustafsson in 2019, “Lionheart” went through one of the rougher patches of his career, losing back-to-back fights in the UFC for the very first time.
But since tough setbacks to former champ Glover Teixeira and top-five contender Aleksandar Raki?, Smith has returned to contention by halting the surge of Jimmy Crute and picking up a pair of main event victories over Devin Clark and Ryan Spann.
With that in mind, Smith is a difficult man to count out, something he’ll hope to prove by spoiling the plans of Ankalaev at UFC 277.
Do you agree with Anthony Smith? Is he being regarded as too big of an underdog for his fight against Magomed Ankalaev?
Stakes will be high in the light heavyweight division at UFC 277, with top contenders Magomed Ankalaev and Anthony Smith set to share the Octagon. The clash between the rising Dagestani and “Lionheart” is the latest bout featured in leaked pictures of the UFC matchmaking board to be confirmed since the images emerged. The revelation…
The UFC 277 pay-per-view, slated for July 30, does not have a confirmed location, but the leaked war room images listed Dallas, Salt Lake City, Boston, and Chicago as possible host cities for the event. The addition of Ankalaev vs. Smith was confirmed by MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn.
Smith (36-16), a former title challenger and the current #5-ranked light heavyweight, has shot back into title contention with three consecutive victories.
After going 1-2 in a trio of bouts following his failed shot at dethroning Jon Jones in 2019, including defeats to current champion Glover Teixeira and Aleksandar Raki?, “Lionheart” has rebounded with a pay-per-view triumph over Jimmy Crute, as well as main event victories over Devin Clark and Ryan Spann.
Now, as the 52-fight veteran looks to secure a second opportunity at holding gold on MMA’s biggest stage, “Lionheart” will have to go through a man tipped as a sure-fire future champion.
Ankalaev (17-1), a former WFCA light heavyweight champion and the current #4-ranked UFC contender, has risen into the group of elite at 205 pounds with eight straight wins inside the Octagon. Since falling to a last-second submission loss to Paul Craig on debut in 2018, the 29-year-old has added the likes of Klidson Abreu, Ion Cu?elaba, and Nikita Krylov to his résumé.
In his latest appearance, which marked his main event debut, Ankalaev dispatched former title challenger Thiago Santos on the scorecards. He’ll now be hoping to secure a title shot by adding the name of another elite contender to his impressive record.
The current fights expected to take place at UFC 277 are as follows:
Derrick Lewis vs. Sergei Pavlovich (heavyweight)
Magomed Ankalaev vs. Anthony Smith (light heavyweight)
The recent matchmaking leak included a heavyweight contest between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic as the UFC 277 headliner, though it’s unclear if that remains the plan after news emerged that Miocic won’t be ready to return until September.
Who do you think will have their hand raised at UFC 277, Magomed Ankalaev or Anthony Smith?

Magomed Ankalaev has continued his rise through the UFC light heavyweight division with a victory over Thiago Santos in the main event of UFC Vegas 50 this evening.
The duo went five rounds at the UFC Apex in what was for the most part a cagey affair. Dagestan native Ankalaev, who went into the bout on a seven-fight win streak, pushed the pace early on before Santos earned a knockdown in round two. But Ankalaev responded by landing the only takedown of the fight in round four and rounding out a unanimous decision win by outstriking Santos 70-60.
The #6 ranked Ankalaev’s UFC record now stands at 8-1, and with victory over #5-ranked Santos, we’ll likely see the 29-year-old break into the top five in the coming days.
You can catch the highlights of the main event below.
This was Ankalaev’s eighth UFC win in a row.
Ankalaev won the final scorecard of 49-46, 49-46, 48-47.
Now, let’s see how fighters reacted to the UFC Vegas 50 main event.
Streaking light heavyweight contender, Magomed Ankalaev continues his run through the ranks with a rather tentative and composed unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-46) victory over one-time title challenger, Thiago Santos to round out a hugely entertaining UFC Vegas 50 card. Scoring his seventh consecutive victory and arguably the most high-profile win of his Octagon tenure to date, Ankalaev managed to outland Santos on the feet beyond a brief late second round knockdown, as well as impose his wrestling against the Brazilian to set up a eventual dominant decision victory.
Adding Santos to an impressive résumé of wins recently, Ankalaev, who entered the bout as the #6 ranked contender in the official light heavyweight pile — will likely leapfrog the Brazilian striker and land within the division’s top-5 off the back of his judging success.
