UFC 209 almost lost another pivotal match-up last night (Sat. March 4, 2017).

Yesterday’s pay-per-view (PPV) main card kicked off with a massive heavyweight clash between No. 3-ranked Alistair Overeem and No. 8-ranked Mark Hunt. Overeem was able to score a massive third-round knockout win over ‘The Super Samoan’, but according to Dana White, the former heavyweight title challenger almost didn’t make it to the Octagon.

White crashed Overeem’s post-fight presser segment to throw praise on ‘The Reem’ for powering through a case of food poisoning and following through on his word to compete on the already injury-riddled card (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“Did you know that he was sick,” White said, taking the microphone from Overeem. “So, he’s been in the hospital for 24 hours. Food poisoning. Throwing up and all the other pleasantries of food poisoning for 24 hours. He was in the hospital, brought him home, and we had to bring him back to the hospital. They had to fill him with bags of fluids, and IVs, and at one point he was afraid to leave his room because he couldn’t stop throwing up and everything else.

“[He] did not want to turn down the fight. [He] still came out and fought tonight and knocked out Mark Hunt. So, and more to his credit, didn’t say one word about it in his interview, and obviously hasn’t said it here yet. I just came in to thank him and tell him how much I respect him.”

Overeem revealed he was given an IV at a local hospital to treat his condition, and took the necessary steps to get cleared for competition by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA):

“So, we went through all the steps necessary,” he said. “I got really sick. Yesterday at the weigh-ins I was out. I was like low energy. I mean, I put on my acting face looking angry, but I had zero energy, and if i felt today as I did yesterday I would not have been able to perform. But, I went to the hospital, got an IV, slept very good, took something to help me sleep. I could get some food in yesterday even before sleeping and recovered kind of okay, and [thought] yeah, we’re going to go for it. We’re going to do this.”

Veteran heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Mark Hunt did battle on the main card of last night’s (March 4, 2017) UFC 209 from Las Vegas, Nevada, and Overeem ended up finishing the fight in the third round when he landed a brutal knee to Hunt’s head.

“The Super Samoan” certainly had a rough night, as he also suffered a leg injury in the first round. There was a visible cut on his leg and he later announced on his Instagram account that he broke his tibia:

The loss to Overeem technically marked Hunt’s second loss in a row, although his decision loss to Brock Lesnar last July was later changed to a no-contest after Lesnar failed a drug test. Hunt has since gone back-and-forth with the UFC on the issue with Lesnar, and he’s even filed a lawsuit against the promotion as well as the ex-heavyweight champion.

As of now, a time table for Hunt’s return is currently unclear.

Despite having food poisoning before his heavyweight bout with hard-hitting Mark Hunt at Saturday’s UFC 209 PPV (pay-per-view) event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, top contender Alistair Overeem overcame all that was brought upon him and produced a great performance.

Due to Hunt’s ongoing lawsuit against the UFC and UFC President Dana White, this bout did take place on the main card but not where it should’ve been slotted, which is the co-main event. Instead, Lando Vannata vs. David Teymur was the co-main event while Overeem and Hunt opened the main card.

Overeem pressed forward and avoided the lingering danger that Hunt can create with his strikes to dominate Hunt in their fight. Overeem finished him the final round of their three-round bout via KO (knees), which saw Hunt faceplant to the canvas. No doubt it was a shocking ending to the fight as Hunt has a reputation for being tough to finish.

The UFC has uploaded highlights from the bout to the UFC on FOX YouTube channel, which you can watch here:

Following his UFC 209 loss to Alistair Overeem on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Mark Hunt revealed that he suffered a broken tibia.

Hunt made the news public in the following Instagram post:

The 42-year-old New Zealand native lost by knockout in the third round after taking a knee to the face.

Saturday marked Hunt’s first bout since he locked horns with Brock Lesnar at UFC 200. Hunt was originally ruled the loser of that fight, but it was changed to a no-contest after Lesnar tested positive for clomiphene and hydroxy-clomiphene.

Hunt now boasts a 12-11-1 record and has won just two of his past six outings.
