Marlon Moraes felt the stoppage in his second-round TKO defeat to Cory Sandhagen was a little premature.

Sandhagen returned to the win column with an impressive spinning wheel kick that dropped Moraes in the UFC Fight Island 5 headliner last night. The referee stopped the bout soon after as Sandhagen pounced to land ground and pound on the Brazilian.

While many had no problems with the stoppage, some observers felt the fight could have gone a bit longer and Moraes certainly agrees.

“I thought we had a very good first round. But I thought I won the round,” Moraes said during the post-fight show on ESPN+ (via Sherdog). “And then he started the second and I don’t know, I think he kind of catch me with a kick and bloodied my eye a little bit and right after he surprised me. He didn’t come this way, he came the other way and that’s it.

“Probably a little early stoppage but whatever. I thought I was [OK to continue] but the ref just jumped on me. I didn’t have time enough to get up.”

Regardless of how he felt about the stoppage, Moraes made no excuses about the defeat and believes it just wasn’t his day as he was simply caught.

“I just got caught,” Moraes added. “He catch me. I was doing good the first round, it was a good fight. I was very excited for this fight. I knew we were going to do the ‘Fight of the Night’ for sure.

“But unfortunately, I got caught. I caught a lot of guys before but that was my day.”

There are only two fighters who make sense to be Cory Sandhagen’s next opponent.

Sandhagen returned to the win column with an emphatic second-round TKO win over Marlon Moraes in the UFC Fight Island 5 headliner on Saturday night.

It put Sandhagen right back into the title mix as he bounced back from what he labeled to be an “embarrassing” first-round submission loss to Aljamain Sterling in June. That victory for Sterling all but assured him of the next shot at the bantamweight title and although it’s yet to be official, it’s highly-expected that the next championship fight will see him face current champion Petr Yan.

If that is the case, Sandhagen only envisions two fighters for him to face next.

“The only other guys who have an argument is TJ when he gets back in January and Frankie [Edgar],” Sandhagen said in his post-fight interview with Dan Hardy. “All the respect to both of those guys but I want that belt. Those are the only two guys ahead of me and then I want the winner of Yan vs. Sterling.”

Dillashaw, of course, is serving a two-year ban from USADA after testing positive for EPO in 2019. He will be eligible to compete in January and a fight with Sandhagen would certainly be an intriguing affair.

Edgar, meanwhile, recently enjoyed a successful bantamweight debut after outpointing Pedro Munhoz in their August headliner.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see what the UFC’s plans are.

In the main event, we saw a bout between two top-ranking Bantamweight’s Marlon Moraes and Cory Sandhagen. The result saw Sandhagen find the finish via a stunning wheel kick in round two. In the co-main event, we saw a three-round striking clinic from Edson Barboza who found victory over Makwan Amirkhani. The first round saw Barboza establish a small lead on scorecards leading into the second where he showcased some impressive knockdowns to take the round. In the final round, Amirkhani managed to take the fight to the ground and accrue some control time before the pair returned to their feet and Barboza continued to land effective strikes. Outside of these two fights, there were plenty of moments warranting of bonuses on the card.

The First Performance of the Night went to Joaquin Buckley for his stunning spinning back kick knockout of Impa Kasanganay. Spoken of by many as the greatest knockout in UFC history, Buckley threw a kick that was caught by Kasanganay, he then proceeded to hop in the air and throw a spinning back kick that would secure him the win and a heft bonus cheque.

The second Performance of the Night came in the next fight between Chris Daukaus and Rodrigo Nascimento Ferreira. After initially knocking Ferreira down and landing some ground and pound Daukaus let Ferreira up to his feet just to knock him back down and close the fight.

The Third Performance of the Night went to Tom Breese for his first-round knockout of K.B. Bhullar. The finish started with a straight left that sat down his opponent and allowed him to finish the fight with hammer fists.

The final Performance of the Night bonus went to Cory Sandhagen in the main event. After a competitive first-round Sandhagen came out in the second landing a head kick on Moraes. Following this, he continued pressing forward throwing a spinning heel kick that knocked Moraes down. Sandhagen immediately jumped on top of him and finished the fight via ground and pound shortly after.
