#4 ranked contender, Cory Sandhagen entered tonight’s headliner opposite one-time title challenger, Marlon Moraes as the betting favourite – and he’s most definitely upset the bantamweight apple cart with a stunning wheel-kick knockout over the Brazilian in the second round.
Sandhagen, ever the one to vary his strikes – landed to the legs, body, and head on cue throughout the opening round to grab Moraes’ attention. Dropping a later takedown after scoring a punishing body kick – Sandhagen may have just about found himself on the wrong end of the opening scorecard.
After finding a home for a high kick early in the second-frame – Sandhagen informed his corner that Moraes has broken his orbital bone, before launching a stunning wheel kick – catching the Brazilian on the top of his head. Following up with ground-and-pound, Sandhagen forced referee Marc Goddard to step in and call a halt to the action – securing the biggest win of his career to date.
With eyes firmly planted on the winner of the long rumoured bantamweight title clash of champion, Petr Yan and former opponent, Aljamain Sterling – Sandhagen noted the title aspirations of former division best, T.J. Dillashaw who returns from suspension in January, as well as former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar – aspirations he holds himself.
Below, catch the highlights from Sandhagen’s shocking knockout of Moraes.

Round 1: Both men open up with low leg kicks. Cory Sandhagen is getting the better of the early leg kick exchanges. He’s been able to slip out of the way of his opponents and land his own. Marlon Moraes knee early is already reddened up. The Brazilian is starting to put his hands together now. Sandhagen rips to the body. Moraes lands up top. Both men are looking really good early. Each shot landed by one man is immediately answered by the other. Moraes slides out the way of a shot then lands a spinning backfist. Sandhagen is clearly targetting the bodt in round one, it looks like he’s counting on tiring his man out. As round one comes to a close Moraes gets a takedown but doesn’t have time to make use of it.
Round 2: Back to the middle of the cage at the start of round two. Good body and leg attacks from Sandhagen. ‘The Sandman’ lands a perfect spinning heel kick that drops Moraes. He follow up to finish the fight!

Taking main event honours, one-time bantamweight title challenger, ‘Magic’ Marlon Moraes looks to possibly earn another crack at division gold, as he meets with division all-rounder, Cory Sandhagen. Hoping to score his second consecutive win, Moraes last featured at UFC 245 in December of last year – taking home a close split decision win over former featherweight champion, José Aldo. Despite the close win, Moraes was overlooked in favour hos compatriot Aldo in regards to a title shot. Hoping to rebound to winning ways, Sandhagen dropped his first promotional loss when he dropped a rear-naked choke defeat to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 250 in June.
In our night’s co-main event, former lightweight mainstay, Edson ‘Junior’ Barboza looks to score his premier victory at his new featherweight home, as he clashes with Finish grappling ace, Makwan ‘Mr. Finland’ Amirkhani on short-notice. Barboza was originally scheduled to meet with ‘Super’ Sodiq Yussuf – with passport issues preventing the streaking division prospect from making the date.
In his second Octagon outing of the year, Barboza attempts to rebound to winning ways after a close decision loss to ‘Dynamite’ Dan Ige at UFC Fight Night Jacksonville in May. Making his second appearance on ‘Fight Island’ this year – Amirkhani scored an eye-catching anaconda finish over Danny Henry in July.

In the UFC Fight Island 5 main event, we have an intriguing bantamweight battle with title implications. Long-time contender Marlon Moraes is set to take on Cory Sandhagen over five rounds on ‘Fight Island’ later tonight. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…
Jordan Ellis: I really like Marlon Moraes in this fight, especially as an underdog. He pretty much steamrolled the entire bantamweight division on his way to a title shot. The Brazilian only fell short due to the incredible ability of Henry Cejudo. Last time out he beat Jose Aldo despite the fact a lot of fans want to discredit that victory. Cory Sandhagen on the other hand is still somewhat unproven at this level. He has height, reach, and youth on his side but lacks elite-level experience. In his biggest test to date, he was easily subbed by Aljamain Sterling so I struggle to understand why he’s the favourite heading into this fight.
Prediction: Marlon Moraes
Ross Markey: For, Moraes this opportunity against Sandhagen may come with some legitimate title implications. Given the UFC’s hastiness to confirm Aljamain Sterling as the next contender to Petr Yan’s throne, and the fact Moraes holds a rather convincing win over the former – a victory over Sandhagen could potentially see Moraes leapfrog his way into the challenger position. Moraes has been in this sort of position before as well. He was overlooked in favour of José Aldo despite taking a victory over his compatriot, albeit close, but his prior high-level experience should be enough to see him through opposite Sandhagen. Saturday represents another massive, high-profile pairing for the Colorado native, but a change of pace may have benefited him better than a matchup as severe as this. He was out-grappled rather easily by the above mentioned, Sterling in June, but certainly still has the skills to tackle the division’s elite – just not on this occasion I believe.
Prediction: Marlon Moraes
Karim Nathan: This is a fight I’ve been looking forward to for a long time and I think could be fight of the night. Moraes will come out aggressive and look for an early stoppage but I think Cory has a good chin and will be able to weather the storm in the early rounds, then I think Moraes might start to fatigue as he did in the Cejudo fight and that will allow Cory to fight his fight and win by late stoppage.
Prediction: Cory Sandhagen
Abhinav Kini: I can see this being a Fight of the Night. Marlon Moraes is super explosive and very fun to watch, but as seen in his two previous fights, there are many things that the creative Corey Sandhagen can exploit. Moraes doesn’t seem to have the best gas tank either and if he is unable to finish Sandhagen — who is very durable — in the first two rounds, I can definitely seen this being a late finish or decision for Sandhagen which is what I’m currently edging towards.
Prediction: Cory Sandhagen
Ryan MacCarthy: Im shocked Marlon is the underdog here. Im not very confident in Sandhagen after his fight with Sterling. What we’ve seen Marlon do with his switch kicks, the way he disguises it and throws quick, it’s beautiful. He switches like his feet are on fire. He knocked out Aljamain like that. He knocked out Jimmie Rivera like that. And i believe he will do the same to Cory Sandhagen. I expect to see Marlon looking to chop Sandhagen down, a lot of low kicks initially. And then Marlon weighs heavy on his experience and what it takes to win a five-round fight. I think Marlon is gonna win by TKO. I’m gonna say in the third round most likely. Im surprised he’s the underdog, but i also love it. Great way to make some dough.
