Likely to crack the UFC bantamweight top-5 come the release of the official rankings next week, surging contender, Marlon Vera turned in a career-best performance against division staple, Rob Font in the main event of UFC Vegas 53 — battering the Massachusetts native in a unanimous decision (48-47, 49-46, 49-46) victory.
Managing to land a trio of spectacular knockdowns against Font in the second, third, and fourth rounds, Vera rallied from a slow-start in the first frame, to take the latter frames — toying with New England Cartel staple, Font toward the end of the fight.
Clipping Font upon entry in the final stages of the second round, Vera dropped the #5 ranked contender, before then launching with a pair of hook kicks, wobbling and dropping Vera once again.
Following his victory, Vera, who was overcome with emotion, was joined in the Octagon by his partner and children set sights on the contenders within in the top-5 of his bantamweight division.

Taking main event honors at the UFC Apex facility, a bantamweight pairing between the #5 ranked contender, Rob Font, and the surging #8 rated challenger, Marlon Vera.
In his most recent outing, Font dropped a rather one-sided unanimous decision loss to former featherweight champion, Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC Vegas 44 back in December of last year.
In the month prior at Madison Square Garden, Ecuador native, Vera landed arguably the most high-profile victory of his professional career with a third round front kick knockout win over former lightweight titleholder, Frankie Edgar on the main card of UFC 268.
For tonight’s main event bout, Font tipped the bantamweight scales at 138.5lbs, tipping the divisional scales by 2.5 pounds, resulting in a catchweight main event against RVCA staple, Vera.

UFC bantamweight contender Marlon Vera says he’s always looking to cause his opponents pain, and upcoming foe Rob Font is no different.
After 18 fights in the UFC spanning eight years in the promotion, Vera is finally set to feature in his first main event on MMA’s biggest stage. The opportunity comes after “Chito” ascended to #8 on the 135-pound ladder with back-to-back victories over Davey Grant and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
If he’s to secure a place among the bantamweight elite, Vera will have to go through top-five contender Font at tonight’s UFC Vegas 53 event.
While victory is the most important thing for Vera, the Ecuadorian is happy to welcome the violence and pain that could come with it…
Vera: I’m Always Looking To Hurt Opponents
During UFC Vegas 53 media day on Wednesday, Vera assessed his first chance in the headline spotlight and the man he’ll be sharing it with. While he credited Font’s abilities, “Chito” firmly expects to deliver a beating when the cage door shuts.
“I feel great. Saturday will come and I’m gonna kick Rob’s ass,” said Vera. “He’s a good fighter. I think he’s a great athlete. I think he’s got experience. His advantage, really, is that he’s big for the division… I know it’s gonna be a tough fight. I know it’s gonna be a hard fight.”
When asked whether he believes a finish is essential to stake his claim for a first title shot, Vera suggested that he’s always looking to hurt his rivals. While a win is the name of the game tonight, causing Font pain would be the cherry on top of what Vera hopes will be a violently-created cake.
“I’m always looking to hurt you. I’m always looking to finish it. So, I know I have the tools for that, I have the endurance for that,” insisted Vera. “I’m just thinking about the win, and if I can hurt you in that process, good for me.”
One man who certainly experienced a level of pain against Vera was Edgar. When the pair collided at UFC 268 last November, “Chito” provided the Madison Square Garden crowd with a memorable knockout, finishing “The Answer” with a vicious front kick.
He’ll certainly be looking to make a similar impact when he goes toe-to-toe with Font in tonight’s main event.
Who do you think will have their hand raised in this weekend’s main event, Marlon Vera or Rob Font?
Rob Font doesn’t seem to be sweating his UFC Vegas 53 main event tilt with Marlon Vera too much. Font is scheduled to meet Vera in the main event of UFC Vegas 53 tonight, Saturday, April 30, 2022, from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. He recently spoke to The AllStar to preview the…
Rob Font doesn’t seem to be sweating his UFC Vegas 53 main event tilt with Marlon Vera too much.
Font is scheduled to meet Vera in the main event of UFC Vegas 53 tonight, Saturday, April 30, 2022, from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. He recently spoke to The AllStar to preview the matchup and was asked about what’s on the line for him heading into this fight.
Simply put, aside from money and notoriety, Font doesn’t see much that affects him either way in this matchup.
“Nothing [LAUGHS]. Not much, man, not much. Some money and obviously my health, but it’s not much. I don’t gain much from this fight. Exposure, experience, and the fact that I get to go back out there, have fun, and do what I love to do. But yeah, this is not one of those fights where I gain much, except for maybe more followers.”
Font is currently ranked the No. 5-rated bantamweight in the UFC. His last Octagon appearance resulted in a unanimous decision loss to former featherweight king José Aldo. The loss put a stop to a four-fight win streak that included wins over names such as Cody Garbrandt, Marlon Moraes, Sergio Pettis, and more.
Interestingly enough, Vera’s last defeat inside the Octagon also came at the hands of Aldo. Vera is the No. 8-ranked 135-pounder under the UFC’s banner, his last loss coming in December of 2020 against “Scarface.”
Since then, Vera has been able to string together back-to-back wins over Davey Grant and Frankie Edgar. A potential win over Font would certainly put him in the top five, where he could make a case for a title opportunity.
Yesterday, Font missed weight for the bantamweight bout, weighing in at 138.5 pounds. He’ll forfeit 20% of his fight purse, but will still compete tonight as scheduled.

Rob Font vs. Marlon Vera
In the main event of the night, we see Now England Cartel product Rob Font take on Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera. Both men are extremely durable customers, neither with a KO loss on their records. However, Rob Font’s striking, especially his educated jab, will give him the advantage in the stand-up department.
Vera may have the advantage on the ground, but Font’s takedown defense will likely be enough to fend off any attempts by ‘Chito’ to bring the fight to the mat for any extended period of time.
We are going to take Rob Font by decision in this one, which can be found at 2.62 odds on Betway.
Andrei Arlovski vs. Jake Collier
This is a simple enough pick to make. Andrei Arlovski typically defeats most heavyweights who aren’t of a top 15 caliber level. Collier is a tricky fighter with some inventive striking, especially for the division. However, expect Arlovski to neutralize the output of the former middleweight, in typical ‘Pitbull’ fashion.
We will once again go for a decision prop, with Arlovski by point available at a line of 2.30.
Andre Fili vs. Joanderson Brito
This seems like a bizarre matchup for the UFC to have made in all honesty. Fili is a 17-fight UFC veteran who is just entering his prime at the age of 31. Brito is 0-1 in the UFC, having lost a close decision to Bill Algeo at the start of the year.
Fili is an excellent competitor who has been in the octagon with the likes of Max Holloway, Yair Rodriguez, and Bryce Mitchell. He is the obvious pick, and yet again, we will predict the fight to go the distance, in Fili’s favor. He can be found at 2.50 odds on Betway.
