UFC bantamweight Marlon Vera has recently come out and said that he accepted a rematch against rival Sean O’Malley but O’Malley turned it down.

These two met last summer at UFC 252. O’Malley was undefeated at the time and was coming off of a vicious walk-off knockout of Eddie Wineland. Vera had just dropped a controversial unanimous decision loss against Song Yadong but had won five straight before that.

The fight started off with both trying to get each others timing down early on. Vera then started beating up O’Malley’s lead leg pretty bad with calf kicks. Eventually in the first round, O’Malley suffered an ankle injury that rendered him one footed. He would fall to the mat on his back and get finished by Vera with strikes from the top.

After this fight, O’Malley and many of his fans were calling for an immediate rematch because of the injury. Meanwhile, Vera and many of his supporters said the Ecuadorian fighter should move on and move up the rankings to find a new opponent. Both would eventually move on and find different opponents for their next fights. Vera would go on to drop a decision loss to Jose Aldo in December of 2020. O’Malley would not come back until recently at UFC 260, where he knocked out Thomas Almeida.

All of this brings us to where we are today, with the possibility of a rematch rearing its head again. According to Vera, the UFC has already offered him the rematch, which he claims he accepted. Vera also claims O’Malley and his camp have been silent about the bout agreement. He would explain this in a quote tweet about the possible rematch.

With O’Malley coming off of a win and having huge star potential, I see the UFC giving him a bigger name for his next fight. He has recently called out Dominick Cruz and made a whole video about it.

A rematch right now would make sense for Vera, seeing that he is coming off a loss and would love to get another win over a high profile guy that he has already beaten.

Both guys are still young and have many of their prime years of fighting still ahead of them. I think that you have to let both guys build their resumes up again and have them possibly rematch a couple of years down the line.

UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling, believes Sean O’Malley is a legit contender at 135lbs.

‘Suga’ is fresh off an impressive return to the win column at UFC 259.

The 26-year-old put on a striking clinic against Thomas Almeida before earning a brutal KO in the third and final round.

During a recent interview with James Lynch, Sterling gave his thoughts on O’Malley as a potential player at bantamweight.

“O’Malley, I think he’s the real deal,” Sterling said. “We don’t know how good he is off of his back yet. But in terms of his feet, his footwork, he’s a tough out I think for a lot of people because he’s long, he’s rangy, and he knows how to move on the feet.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

‘The Funk Master’ refused to pay much attention to the fact the only time O’Malley has stepped up his level of competition, he was stopped inside one round by Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

“I think people kind of wrote him off too soon,” Sterling said. “The Chito fight was a very fluke-ish kinda scenario, not saying it was a fluke kick cause he threw the kick. But it was just one of those things like what are the odds that it actually happens.”

“The fight was just getting going, and if his foot was okay and the fight was going from there, when he was on the ground,” Sterling continued. “I don’t know, it makes it tough to take that away from Chito, but that kind of fight-ending could really put a damper on O’Malley’s performance what he was able to do one, two minutes before that. It was just such a short fight you can’t put too much stock into that.” (Transcribed by Essentially Sports)

Marlon Vera is not one to make excuses following his defeats.

Vera is coming off a unanimous decision defeat to Jose Aldo in their bantamweight clash at UFC Vegas 17 last month. Despite having his moments, he was largely outclassed by the former featherweight champion.

And for that, Vera blames nobody but himself.

“I believe, when you lose, there are a million things you can make up. You can make up a million excuses,” Vera told MMA Junkie. “I tried just to see the realistic (reasons) why I (lost) or what I could’ve done better. I believe coming into the third round, I was too excited. I was so sure I was about to finish him in a really spectacular way that I came in too heavy.

“… It’s my fault. There is no coach to blame. There are no teammates to blame. … I don’t want to erase this memory because that’s what’s going to get me through the next things. I’m going to use that chip on my shoulder to not overcommit or get too excited. I went for the kill and got stuck in a weird position. (Expletive) happens.”

Of course, one fighter who took pleasure in seeing Vera lose was Sean O’Malley.

O’Malley suffered his first professional defeat to Vera after a first-round TKO defeat in their UFC 252 co-headliner in August. However, “Sugar” — whose foot was injured during the bout — has since maintained that he’s still undefeated and has taken various shots at Vera who he believes won by a fluke.

O’Malley would also later claim he had no interest in a rematch with Vera either unless he went on a winning streak.

Vera, however, isn’t too bothered by O’Malley. And if he does end up facing him again, he believes it’ll just be a repeat of the first meeting.

“Everybody’s always got something to say,” Vera added. “What can we do about it? There’s nothing you can do about it. I won’t lose time arguing with a (expletive)(expletive). What I can do for sure is kick his ass – again. I’m not looking to fight nobody. I’m just looking to fight whoever the (expletive) UFC puts in front of me.”

Sean O’Malley has shut down talk of a potential rematch with Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

‘Suga’ suffered his first and only career defeat against Vera at UFC 252 back in August. O’Malley ate a low leg kick early and never really covered. ‘Chito’ swarmed with nasty ground and pound before the referee stepped in to save the young prospect from suffering a vicious knockout.

O’Malley has been very vocal about the loss being something of a fluke and insisted he is a much better fighter despite losing on the night. Vera has since gone on to suffer a decision loss at the hands of former featherweight champion Jose Aldo. The Ecuadorian has spoken recently about not wanting to rematch O’Malley who has now done the same.

“For me to rematch (Vera), he’ll have to be on a win streak. It’ll have to make sense,” O’Malley said on his YouTube channel.  “I feel like I’m just a different level fighter. That would be like fighting someone backwards.”

“He said there’s not enough money in the world to fight me again,” O’Malley added. “But dude, if he loses another fight and he’s like, ‘I want to fight Sean.’ He’s about to be Chito ‘Prelim’ Vera.” (Transcribed by MMA News)
