IT’S TIME! The UFC Vegas 16main event is finally upon us. Jack Hermansson takes on Marvin Vettori in an intriguing clash between two of the best middleweights on the planet. Who’ll win? Let’s find out…
Round 1: Jack Hermansson opens up with a low leg kick. Marvin Vettori lands a left hand early. ‘The Joker’ is trying to stay on his toes and keep the distance but Vettori is enjoying success pushing forward and landing shots. The Italian is super aggressive early and is landing good shot but Hermansson is hanging with him and landing counter strikes. Vettori steams forward and eats an uppercut. Unfazed he continues to throw and drops Hermansson. Vettori tries to swarms with strikes and even threatens with a choke but his opponent survives. Just over a minute left on the clock and Hermansson is trying to work his way to his way back up but Vettori shuts it down by repositioning the head. He maintains top position until the final few second when Hermansson popped back up and landed an uppercut before the horn sounded.
Round 2: Hermansson lands with a right hand early. He’s aggressive at the start of round two and clearly wants to get that round back. ‘The Joker’ drops down for a takedown. He’s attacking it relentlessly and manages to sit Vettori down twice before the Italian hits the switch and reverses the position. Vettori is now sitting in his opponents guard. He’s not being aggressive on the ground and is content to maintain control rather than hunt for the finish or advance at all. Vettori gets back to his feet and is standing over Hermansson throwing kicks at his downed opponent who eventually stands up. Hermansson shoots in against the fence but immediately bails and lands a nice knee to the body. They break and he lands a kick to the body, Vettori returns with a upstairs before round two ends.
Round 3: Hermansson is really struggling to get anything going right now. Every time he moves into range Vettori pops him with something. Hermansson shoots for a takedown but the Italian has terrific defence and again avoids hitting the mat. Another attempt from Hermansson see both men fall to the mat awkwardly before popping back up. ‘The Joker’ lands a nice shot. He’s definitely looking a bit better in this round. Vettori is still throwing and landing hard shots though. Hermansson lands a big right hand but doesn’t follow up. Vettori goes to the body. Hermansson lands a straight shot as his opponent tried to lean out of range. A Hermansson jab seemed to get a significant reaction from Vettori who is circling on the outside waiting for the round to end.
Round 4: Vettori is aggressive at the start of round four after being told in his corner he dropped the previous one. Hermansson is meeting him in the middle though – things are heating up now. It’s so even on the feet right now. Both men are just trading up at the point. Every punch landed is immediately answered on both sides. Hermansson dips up a punch and comes back up with an overhand. Vettori just keeps popping out a straight left which just cannot miss right now. Hermansson puts a flurry of punches together. Uppercut, hook, and straight shots that combo had everything. Vettori answers back again and very clearly is the more heavy handed guy. A terrific pace throughout round four which for my money has been the best round of this fight.
Round 5: Vettori opens up with another one of those hard straight lefts. He’s really putting it on Hermansson early. ‘The Joker’ throws a wild four-punch combo. He’s showing lots of grit right now is certainly going down without a fight in this main event. They continue to trade up but Vettori lands the most significant shot. Another straight down the pipe. Without fans in attendance you can really hear the crack when he lands that shot. Hermansson is going for is now. He lands a hook and is egged on by Vettori before landing another. Just 90 seconds on the clock and he’s pressing the action. Vettori ducks under a punch and initiates the clinch. He pushes his opponent up against the fence. Vettori is content to ride of this position but referee Herb Dean is urging him to work. He drags the fight down and is forced to defend a heel hook attempt before round five ends.

For Swedish-born submission specialist, Jack ‘The Joker’ Hermansson, he’s finally made it to Fight Night for UFC Vegas 16. And more importantly, with an opponent finally nailed down. Intially scheduled to tackle Darren ‘The Gorilla’ Till, and then Kevin ‘The Trailblazer’ Holland, Hermansson now clashes with Marvin Vettori who replaces Holland after he contracted COVID-19, who had replaced Till who was dealing with a reoccurring ACL injury.
Hoping to strike two wins from two in 2020, middleweight contender, Hermansson returned to winning ways on UFC Fight Island 2 in July, scoring a highlight-reel, quickfire heel-hook stoppage over former interim title chaser, Kelvin Gastelum in a co-headlining pairing.
For former Venator FC titleholder, Vettori, the Italian contender brings his Octagon walk a week forward, replacing Holland. The Trento native was slated to meet with returning former Strikeforce 185-pound best, Jacare Souza at next weekend’s event, with Holland now clashing with the Brazilian in a middleweight switcheroo.
Riding a three-fight winning spree, Vettori last featured opposite Karl Roberson at UFC Vegas 2 in June, nabbing a first-round rear-naked choke victory.
Taking co-main event honours tonight, one-time interim light heavyweight title challenger, Ovince Saint Preux takes on Jamahal ‘Sweet Dreams’ Hill, looking to build a head of steam off the back of his stunning one-punch knockout win over touted prospect, Alonzo Menifield.
Undefeated in seven professional outings, Dana White‘s Contender Series alum, Hill made his mark on the UFC roster with a unanimous decision victory over Darko Stosic at UFC Fight Night Raleigh in January, before a ‘No Contest’ outing opposite Klidson Abreu at UFC Vegas 1 in May.

Jordan Ellis: I’m backing Jack Hermansson in this one. I think this is a 50-50 fight on paper but give the edge to ‘The Joker’ for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he has already beaten people who are at a higher level. Secondly, Vettori was supposed to compete at UFC 256 next week and a rushed weight cut could impact him at some point in this five-round fight. I expect Hermansson to ultimaley edge this one out on the judge’s scorecards.
Prediction: Jack Hermansson
Karim Nathan: I was quite surprised to see Vettori being the favourite for this one, Hermansson is the more experienced fighter and I feel they balance out in the grappling department but Hermansson has a slight edge in the stand up. I believe we will see a lot of clinch fighting in this one and will come down to who can get the better in the clinch situations and who can control the other one better. Im going with a Hermansson unanimous decision based on that he was training for 5 rounds and I believe his experience will help him out in this one.
Prediction: Jack Hermansson
Ross Markey: Given the short-notice circumstances surrounding this matchup, it’s hard to separate either Vettori or Hermansson in my opinion. Credit to Hermansson for remaining on this card following fallouts with both Darren Till and Kevin Holland, and credit to Vettori for drafting in on short-notice. I’d have to agree with Karim on this one. It’s quite puzzling how Vettori enters this one as a favourite in most books. He’s certainly able to match the grappling chaps of Hermansson, although the Swede may have the better finishing instincts in some of those possible exchanges. While it’ll certainly prove difficult for Hermansson to put someone like Vettori away on the feet, I’m picking him to score a finish in this one, against a very gritty Vettori.
Prediction: Jack Hermansson
Abhinav Kini: I was also surprised to see Vettori being the betting favorite for this. While he’s a good grappler in his own right, I feel Hermansson is on a slightly higher level and will have success taking him down. If Vettori is able to stop those takedowns, the fight is certainly interesting on the feet and he has a much better chance of winning. That said, I don’t see that happening as I predict a submission win for Hermansson in the first few rounds.
Prediction: Jack Hermansson
Ryan MacCarthy: I was very surprised to see Jack Hermansson as the underdog in the bout. Vettori is really a guy who flies under the radar. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves, but this this is a very big step up in competition for him. I really like Hermansson in this one. I just feel stylistically he matches up tough and he’s been fighting much higher level competition. I see Hermansson taking this in the 3rd round via submission.
