As MMA fans we’ve almost become immune to stories of fighters getting injured, from broken hands and feet through to fractured noses, orbital bones and torn ACL’s.

These kinds of ailments are easily diagnosed from MRI scans and x-rays, but what’s harder to pinpoint is the toll that being repeatedly punched, kicked, elbowed and kneed in the face does to the brain and overall mental health of the fighters.

In recent years the brain disorder Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) has come to light in American Football, a condition caused from repeated blows to the head that can cause memory loss, difficulty thinking and eventually dementia, but it’s something that can only be fully diagnosed via an autopsy after death.

It’s often argued that MMA is still such a young sport, relatively speaking, that we don’t fully understand the extent of the damage it may or may not be causing, but while that may be true to an extent, there are already a growing body of anecdotal evidence that some fighters are paying a high price for their exploits in the cage.

In this article we’ll acknowledge the elephant in the room and focus in particular on 10 alarming stories of MMA stars who have suffered from one of the leading symptoms of brain trauma – memory loss, whether it’s in the immediate aftermath of some of most violent knockouts in UFC history, or in some particularly troubling cases on a daily basis even long after they’ve retired from the sport.

Krzysztof Soszynski

In 2014, 35-year-old UFC fighter Krzysztof Soszynski not only announced his retirement from the sport, but also bravely spoke out about the deeply troubling reasons for his decision.

By that stage Soszynski was already over two-years removed from his last fight against Igor Pokrajac at UFC 140, where he’d been knocked out cold for the first time in his career after just 35 seconds.

Soszynski said on ‘Inside MMA’ that his brain didn’t wake up for 40 minutes after the fight and so he has no recollection of being in the Octagon, giving a post-fight interview backstage, showering or changing afterwards.

Soszynski took six months off afterwards, but then admitted to UFC President Dana White that he was still having “head trouble,” including forgetting things, struggling to find words, mixing things up and having difficulty counting backwards from 20 to 0.

Upon hearing that White retired Soszynski on the spot and sent him to a brain specialist to get checked out, but unfortunately for ‘The Polish Experiment,’ even a few years later he was still dealing with the same issues.

“I’m sitting here now, and I can tell you I don’t remember Wednesday. And that’s two days ago,” Soszynski told Bas Rutten and Kenny Rice on ‘Inside MMA’.

Soszynski hasn’t bowed down to his ailments though and has gone on to become the UFC’s Director of MMA for their U.S. gyms as well as landing small roles in movies like ‘Logan’ and ‘Here Comes The Boom.’

UFC welterweight fighter Matt Brown rose up the ranks in the promotion, and now it seems that he is on a decline. In his most recent fight, which was against Donald Cerrone at UFC 206 in December, Brown lost by knockout. During a recent interview with ESPN, Brown noted that he couldn’t get amped up for the fight and that he had no pre-fight nerves even though he was fighting a fan favorite in the co-main event. At the start of the third round of the fight, Brown acknowledged a request from Cerrone to touch gloves and hug in the center of the cage. Moments later, Cerrone knocked Brown out with a head kick.

“I hate to sound like I’m making excuses, but these last few fights I’ve went in with no real hunger in my heart,” said Brown, on ESPN’s 5ive Rounds podcast. “Last fight, I remember being in the back warming up and I said to myself, ‘Man, I’d rather go back to the hotel and chill. I don’t even feel like being here.’ “And I guess that third round, that’s what happened. I relaxed even more. A lot of people are talking about, ‘He shouldn’t have shook hands or gave him that hug.’ I look back on it myself and say, ‘I never would have done that a few years ago. I never would have hugged a guy. If a guy came up to hug me, I’d punch him in the face for it.’”

Brown has now decided to take an extended break from fighting due to lack of fire as well as a few disappointing losses in his recent fights. Brown noted that at any time those plans could fly out the window but he is having an honest conversation with himself regarding the state of his career.

A lack of fire, coupled with the disappointing results of his recent fights, has convinced Brown to take an “extended break.” He admits that at any moment, under the right circumstances, that plan could fly out the window, but he’s having very honest, pointed conversations with himself regarding the state of his career.

“What it really comes down to in the end is I look at myself and wonder, ‘Have I peaked out?’” Brown said. “Have I gotten as far as I could possibly get? I’m not going to go into a fight just to fight and I’m not going to go in just for money. I’ve gotten up to No. 5 in the world and I’ve fought former titleholders. I’ve performed well against the best in the world. If I’ve peaked out, that means it’s time to stop.”

Brown doesn’t want to stop fighting but he doesn’t want to show up for a fight with lack of motivation again either as that is a dangerous combo for someone getting in a cage and having a fist fight.

“I don’t want to be that guy,” Brown said. “I think we’re so narrow-minded and tunnel-visioned for so long. So enveloped in this one world, one goal, one focus — how do you step away from that? How do you transition to something else when you don’t see anything else for years and years? Now, all of a sudden you look around, and there is this whole other world that I wouldn’t even say I necessary fit in. I fit in with this small group of savages, beating each other up for money. That’s where I feel like I belong. That’s where I want to stay. But if it’s risking my health, that’s another thing.”

Mike Perry: ‘F*ck Donald Cerrone & Matt Brown, I Would End Brown’s Career’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yoTuGVkOPQ

Mike Perry is not one to mince words. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight is coming off the first loss of his professional career to Alan Jouban. That isn’t stopping “Platinum” from firing shots at other 170-pounders.

Perry recently spoke to BJPenn.com‘s Chris Taylor. He was asked about the fight between Donald Cerrone and Matt Brown back at UFC 206. While “Platinum” gave the fight its due, that’s where the compliments ceased:

“Yeah that Matt Brown versus Cerrone scrap was a great fight man. I seen that kick coming everyday and all day. But yeah it was a great fight. Both of those guys are good fighters and have a good fan base. But as far as I am concerned, f*ck them both. Brown is an old man and Cerrone’s time is almost up. If it came down to business between me and Matt Brown, I would end his career.”

Cerrone knocked Brown out in the third round with a head kick. The fight pushed “Cowboy’s” winning streak to four. Meanwhile, “The Immortal” suffered his third straight loss.

If Perry is able to get a bout with Brown, it’ll be his highest profile bout to date. Brown sits at No. 14 on the UFC welterweight rankings. Perry is currently unranked.
