The Ultimate Fighting Championship continues to give us exciting new match bookings week by week, and this one is no different, as The Ultimate Fighter 7 contestant Matt Brown is slated to face The Ultimate Fighter 11 winner Court McGee at UFC Fight Night 225.

UFC Fight Night 225 is to go down on May 13, 2023, live from a to-be-determined venue and location.

As it currently sits, UFC Fight Night 225 has three bouts scheduled thus far.

The first of these match ups was announced about a week ago, a light-heavyweight affair between no. 5 ranked Anthony Smith and no. 7 ranked Johnny Walker. Then the UFC recently added a women’s bantamweight clash between Jessica-Rose Clark and Tainara Lisboa, and now of course Brown versus McGee at 170 lbs.

Matt Brown went 2-1 on his season of The Ultimate Fighter, securing both victories via knockout and only losing to eventual season champion Amir Sadollah, while McGee went 3-1 on the show with two submission victories en route to winning his season.

Both of these men have had a bit of a rocky road along the way, but both have also had incredible success through their careers.

Matt Brown defeated eventual multi-time Bellator welterweight champion Douglas Lima (TKO) before even joining the UFC roster.

Since joining the UFC roster, he became the first man to ever defeat Stephen Thompson (UD), who went on to fight for a UFC championship not once, but twice following, and he also boasts wins over the likes of Mike Swick (KO), Mike Pyle (KO), Erick Silva (TKO), Tim Means (guillotine choke), Diego Sanchez (KO), and Dhiego Lima (KO), which made him 2-0 against the Lima brothers with both victories coming via knockout.

Then we have Court McGee, who came to the UFC with a record of 11-1, only losing to UFC veteran Jeremy Horn in that time.

McGee initially went 5-2 through his first seven octagon appearances, one of those wins coming over future UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (SD), and one coming over longtime veteran Josh Neer (UD). He also defeated Claudio Silva (UD) recently, who was 5-1 in the UFC at the time of their encounter, and he’s gone 2-1 over his last three.

Who walks away from this welterweight clash the victor, Matt Brown or Court McGee?

UFC veteran, Matt Brown shared his thoughts on the welterweight division and believes Belal Muhammad is the “biggest threat.”

The UFC Welterweight division is at a standstill of sorts as the organization figures out what to do with the Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman trilogy situation. Along with this, there are still question marks about Khamzat Chimaev’s ability to fight at 170 and Colby Covington‘s desire to step back into the octagon any time soon.

With all these unknowns, UFC vet, Matt Brown is sure of one thing, Belal Muhammad is as much of a threat to the top welterweights as anyone else. Matt Brown recently appeared on The Fighter vs. The Writer podcast and shared his thoughts about his weight division and Belal Muhammad.

“If you want to talk about biggest threat to [Kamaru] Usman, I’m going with Belal Muhammad. I think Belal Muhammad is probably the biggest threat to all of these guys. I think Usman beats Leon and the champ at the end of the year is either Belal or Usman.” (H/T MMAFighting)

Matt Brown believes Belal Muhammad can win against anyone at 170 pounds

As it stands, Belal Muhammad is ranked number 4 in the Welterweight division, after his dominating TKO win over Sean Brady. The power and improved striking he showcased in that fight took a lot of people by surprise and Matt Brown believes that’s one of the things that differentiates Muhammad from his contemporaries.

“He’s not like Colby [Covington] where he’s keeping a high pace but it’s kind of soft punches, kind of meaningless stuff that you can disregard and not really worry about. Colby will do so many different shots until he finally gets it whereas Belal, he’s a high pace work horse. He’s a truck. He’s coming hard the whole time. I think he poses a lot of threat for every single person in this division and I want to see him fight Usman.”

Currently, Muhammad doesn’t have a fight set up. He has called out Edwards for a title fight and has even challenged Chimaev to one, too. Muhammad has also seen the high praise Matt Brown has given him and has appreciated the kind words.

Matt Brown: Michael Chandler chooses to be “Arturo Gatti when he could be Floyd Mayweather,” an entertainers dilemma

The most exciting cross-over superstar in history potentially, Michael Chandler, has hit a rough patch in what was a stunning start to his UFC career.

The Bellator icon had an illustrious career with the promotion, but after accomplishing almost everything possible, he made the transition to the UFC back in 2021. Now, after almost two years with the brand, ‘Iron Mike’ is sitting with a 2-3 UFC record.

The Bellator legend made his debut against Dan Hooker and ended the fight with an insane knockout finish. He would drop two, to Charles Oliveira and Justin Gaethje, respectively. Both fights were phenomenal, as has been the story with every UFC fight Chandler has been a part of. After dropping the two losses, he secured a highlight reel front-kick knockout over Tony Ferguson.

In Michael Chandler’s last battle against Dustin Poirier at UFC 281, the two warriors put on a show, but unfortunately for Michael Chandler, he would not come out on top this time either. He suffered a third-round loss via rear-naked choke, sparking debate if Chandler is trying too hard to entertain rather than trying actually to win fights.

Matt Brown believes Michael Chandler could be Floyd Mayweather and fight smarter

Matt Brown appeared on a podcast by MMA Fighting, where he critiqued the wild intensity that Chandler fights with. “He needs to fix his strategy,” Brown said about Chandler (H/T MMA Fighting). “In my particular style, that’s just how I fight. That’s how I beat guys. I go in, I wear them out, I make it a tough fight, kind of a Dustin Poirier kind of thing. We go in, we make it dirty, make it grimy, and guys get worn out and overwhelmed by it.”

“Now, Michael Chandler,” Brown continued. “We get the feeling — at least me and you and the people watching — he doesn’t have to do that. He is fighting for the fans. There’s basically two different ways to fight. Do you want to fight for the fans, or do you want to fight for yourself and win?”

Brown makes an intriguing argument. With the experience and versatility of ‘Iron Mike’, one could imagine he could battle a lot more tactically.

Matt Brown even made a comparison between Gatti vs. Mayweather. The two were involved in a fight where Mayweather tactically beat the brakes off of Gatti, ending in a merciful corner stoppage in the sixth.

“Floyd pieced him up easily,” Brown said about that night. “That’s exactly it. Gatti never developed those skills. That’s sort of the difference with Gatti and Chandler. I think Chandler, as much of a compliment as it is to be compared to Arturo Gatti, [with] Chandler we see the ability to go out there and win titles. I think most of us assume, we don’t know for sure, but we assume he probably could have beaten Dustin Poirier with a smart strategy. But he’s playing Dustin Poirier’s strategy. He’s playing Justin Gaethje’s strategy when he does that.”

“When he (Michael Chandler) goes out there and wings it like that. Does that mean you’re going to lose every time? No, because it works for him a lot of times too, but what you’re doing is you’re playing those guy’s game. Take them out of their game if you have the ability to do that. A lot of guys don’t have the ability to do that. There’s guys that’s kind of what they’re stuck with.”

Matt Brown dives deeper into the Michael Chandler and Arturo Gatti comparison

“What do we remember Gatti for? The wars,” Brown continued. “What do we remember Mayweather for? Not any wars,” Brown said. “We remember him for piecing people up.”

“That’s my whole criticism here. Not to knock on Michael Chandler, love the dude and love his style and love everything about him. It’s his career, he can do whatever he wants. But what I see is the ability for him to go out there and be that dominant champion, and he simply chooses not to.”

“He chooses to be Arturo Gatti when he could be Floyd Mayweather. Whether that’s right or wrong, we’ll have to see if he ever changes up his style, but that’s what it seems to me is his own choice.”

“People love winners more than they love brawlers or anything,” Brown said. “I could knock myself for this, too. I probably could have settled down many times and just picked people apart or used a little bit of wrestling, but that’s what people are going to remember in the end — the winner. That’s why people talk about Floyd so much, because he keeps winning. What does Floyd talk about all the time? How he wins. That’s all he brings up. That’s what people are going to care about.”

“If you have the ability to do it, and you’re saying you want to be a champion, then go do that. You don’t have to please anybody. Now if he wants to just go out and please the fans, that’s fine too. We love that. You’ll keep getting top billings on pay-per-views. You keep putting on f****** amazing fights, Michael Chandler. We love that. But you’ve got to kind of decide your strategy and what you want to get out of this.”

There has been a lot made of former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields’ run in with UFC welterweight talent Mike Jackson at the UFC Performance Institute over the last week, Matt Brown being the latest to chime in on the matter.

For those of you who are unaware, Jackson and Shields got into it on Twitter, with Jackson calling the former UFC title challenger a Nazi, as well as a white nationalist. Shields did not take too kindly to this choice of words, and he confronted Jackson on site, as he claimed he would do.

Shields took Jackson down, mounted him, and got a few shots off before being pulled off and forced to leave the PI.

Matt Brown, the fighter with the most finishes in UFC welterweight history, had the following to say in regards to their altercation:

“I mean more power to Jake. This guy (Jackson) was talking shit to him and I know Jake says some fucking crazy shit on Twitter. I’ve followed him for a while. He says some shit that no one’s going to agree with but you don’t go calling people Nazis and shit. Jake is far from a Nazi.

“He might say some shit you don’t agree with. He might be a little out there on some things according to you, or according to someone else, but come on man. You know you can’t say that shit and then see Jake Shields in person and (act like) he’s not going to do anything. So fuck Mike Jackson.”

“You’re a UFC fighter, too. You are in the UFC, too. You’re an open book. That’s an open invite to fuck you up or to fight you. Especially at the UFC PI. What do you think Jake’s going to do? More power to Jake. Fuck that guy.

“If you’re a UFC fighter, you’re opening yourself to those consequences. You’re going to talk shit to another UFC fighter, when you guys see each other you’re probably either going to be fighting or he’s going to try to fight you. You see this all the time. Guys are ready to throw down any second.”

Jackson has decided to press charges on Shields for the assault, with a likely court case pending for a future date.

Was Jake Shields in the right, or was he in the wrong to force a fight upon Mike Jackson?

Matt Brown speaks out on Paddy Pimblett’s ‘lack of discipline’ outside of fight camp

Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett has very quickly become one of the brightest, most popular young stars in the sport of MMA today.

The former Cage Warriors featherweight champion had a sizeable following prior to joining the UFC’s roster last year in 2021.

Since Paddy Pimblett debuted for the organization last September at UFC Vegas 36, the 27-year-old has gone 3-0 with three finishes, improving to 19-3 in the process, where he captured Performance of the Night bonuses in all three victories.

But, if there’s one critique most would have, it’s that Paddy Pimblett doesn’t stay in shape when he’s not training for a fight, ballooning up to nearly 200 lbs in his off seasons.

That hasn’t stopped him from making weight, but it has however been a reason for concern when regarding the English talent from Liverpool.

The latest figure to speak out on this was longtime UFC welterweight staple Matt Brown:

“The biggest thing, the x-factor that we haven’t really talked about is Paddy’s weight problems when he’s not in camp. He’s sitting there glorifying eating pizza and cheeseburgers and shit. We’ve seen the pictures. He gets ridiculously big, and that shows me a lack of discipline. That shows me that most of his (training) camp is really fat camp.

“You can’t live that way, especially in the UFC. You can’t live that way. You’re fighting killers that are training year round, staying on weight, staying ready. You’re fighting fucking lions here, and I think that’s a very, very bad move by Paddy,” Brown stated on The Fighter vs The Writer podcast.

Brown continued: “He might make weight easy. It might not even be a problem making weight (for him). Maybe he didn’t have to spend his whole camp in fat camp or whatever, but you can see right through it and see all the discipline issues that come along with that. There’s no way he’s in there training his balls off everyday.

“He’s not in there pushing himself everyday. He’s not in there testing himself, evolving, that’s the big thing. You’re not evolving. You’re not getting better everyday. Other guys are. So every time they’re getting one-percent better, that’s another day you’re falling behind.”

Do you agree with Matt Brown? Can Paddy Pimblett continue evolving in spite of his lifestyle choices?

Be sure to watch Paddy Pimblett take on Jared Gordon tonight at UFC 282!
