UFC president Dana White didn’t seem surprised by Colby Covington’s UFC Newark post-fight insult directed at Matt Hughes.

Covington infamously took a shot at the UFC Hall of Famer following his five-round decision win over Robbie Lawler this past weekend:

“Let’s talk about the lesson we learned tonight,” Covington said. “It’s a strong lesson that Robbie should’ve learned from his good buddy Matt Hughes. You stay off the tracks when the train’s coming through, junior. Don’t matter if there’s a Trump train or the Colby train, get out the way!”

Many in the mixed martial arts world were shocked by the comments and found it distasteful, including Jorge Masvidal. However, White simply felt it was another typical Covington moment and didn’t pay heed to it much:

“I think it was very Colby, you know,” White responded. “He’s Dan Lambert’s guy and you know, Matt Hughes is best friends with Dan Lambert. They’re together all the time. So it was typical Colby Covington.”

Many in the mixed martial arts world were shocked by the comments. Hughes would react himself soon after, and to his credit, took it in stride. However, in a recent live stream Q&A, Masvidal said the comments were not even remotely funny.

“He did? I didn’t see that,” Masvidal said (via MMA News). “That’s not even remotely funny. That’s the stupidest sh*t I’ve ever heard if that’s real. …Super distasteful. Whatever, that’s kinda stupid of him.”

Masvidal and Covington were former roommates and training partners, and despite the latter’s claim that they are still best friends, it appears that things have become a little hostile between the two. However, it should come as no surprise either as the pair are on a collision course.

Earlier today (Sat. August 3, 2019) Colby Covington picked up a big win over Robbie Lawler in the UFC Newark main event.

Covington dominated “Ruthless” for 25 minutes inside of the Octagon. After his fight, however, Covington made some controversial comments about UFC Hall Of Famer Matt Hughes. He poked fun at Hughes’ 2017 train accident that left him hospitalized for some time.

Here’s what Covington had to say, per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

“Let’s talk about a lesson, Robbie Lawler should have learned from Matt Hughes. Get off the tracks when the train is coming.”

Hughes, a noted supporter of Lawler in the past, took to Instagram to respond to Covington’s comments. Here’s what he had to say.

“Not sure if @colbycovmma should have use my accident as fuel for his post-fight trash talk, but that was one heck of a fight. Nice win for @americantopteam, and @ruthless_rl always puts on a good fight. Reminder though, this is the fighting world. People trash talk and you gotta have thick skin”

Aside from his controversial comments on Hughes, Covington is now expected to challenge Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title next. The pair actually had a heated exchange on the ESPN+ post-fight show.

Colby Covington is one of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world’s most controversial figures.

He didn’t disappoint when on the microphone after his UFC Newark main event win over Robbie Lawler earlier today (Sat. August 3, 2019). Covington took a shot at UFC Hall Of Famer and former welterweight champ Matt Hughes’ recent train accident, in which he was struck by a train while crossing the tracks in his truck. Here’s what he had to say, per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

“Let’s talk about a lesson, Robbie Lawler should have learned from Matt Hughes. Get off the tracks when the train is coming.”

In June of 2017 Hughes was struck by a train while driving in his hometown in Montgomery County, Illinois. Miraculously, he had no broken bones or internal injuries but was unconscious and unresponsive for some time. Hughes eventually recovered from the accident but now has trouble speaking. Earlier this year, Hughes was hit with domestic violence allegations by his wife and was also given a restraining order by his brother.

As for Covington, he is now on a seven-fight win streak inside the Octagon. “Chaos’” latest victory has likely solidified him as the next challenger for Kamaru Usman’s welterweight throne. It will be interesting to see how the two high-level wrestlers match up against each other inside the cage.
