The investigation into the tragic accident involving former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes continues.

Illinois State Police Officers and the Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit are holding out hope that they’ll be able to speak to Hughes to find out what happened last Friday after his truck was hit by a moving train on the passenger’s side on Beeler Trail in Montgomery County, Illinois. The railroad crossing reportedly did not have a barricade and was only marked with a sign.

Per a report from MMA Junkie, ISP public information officer Jason Bradley said that officers are waiting to see if Hughes’ condition improves enough for them to speak with him about the accident that required him to be airlifted to a nearby Springfield hospital.

He also said that they are awaiting the toxicology reports from the hospital Hughes was taken to:

“If he obviously is in a position where they think he’s going to pull through, the investigation will continue, because they’re going to want to interview him,” Bradley said. “They’re going to go back and recreate everything they can up to that point. They’re going to wait for toxicology tests to come back.

“There really is no time frame, because a lot of times, a majority of the investigation will be completed, but they’re waiting on one thing before they can close it.

Hughes is currently in stable condition and his sister, Beth Ulrici, said in a recent statement that her brother has no broken bones or internal injuries, however, he has yet to wake up and is not responding. Hughes is currently on a ventilator.

The Triumph Over Tragedy Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that aims to “support the family unit through biblical principles from the initial impact of a tragedy of illness,” recently contacted the Hughes family during this difficult time. One of Hughes’ close family members (who asked to remain anonymous) stated that Triumph founder Reggie Jones offered to evaluate Hughes and have him transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta – who specializes in brain trauma.

We’ll keep you updated on Hughes’ situation as we learn more…..

Matt Hughes remains in stable condition after he was hospitalized with serious injuries sustained when a truck he was driving was hit by an oncoming train in Illinois last Friday morning according to a family statement released by Hughes’ sister.

Beth Hughes Ulrici posted on her Facebook account (via MMA Fighting) earlier today (Sun., June 18, 2017) that the UFC welterweight legend was ‘stable with no broken bones or internal injuries,’ but was not yet awake as he is weaned off of his ventilator:

Official Family Statement

“Our family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support.

Please understand that there are many false reports out there by people who say they are close to the family. We will post another update here when we have more news.

Matt is stable and has no broken bones or internal injuries. He has some minor lacerations and bruising and is currently being weaned from his ventilator. He is not yet awake and not responding as we would like to see but we see the fight in him.

Matts strength and determination along with God’s Mercy and Grace will bring him through this.

We ask that you all continue to pray.”

Hughes, 43, was hit by an oncoming train around 10:45 a.m. on Friday when he drove his vehicle onto the tracks, where it struck the passenger side of his vehicle according to details released shortly thereafter from the Illinois State Police. He was then airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, where he will hopefully recover from the unfortunate accident.

Yesterday a report surfaced where Hughes’ longtime manager Monte Cox said his client was ‘awake and responsive’ according to Hughes’ brother Mark, something that may have been untrue based on what his sister detailed above.

There’s been no word on if Hughes Ulrici is referring to Cox’ words or something else, but clearly they want to set the record straight and provide their own personal side of the harrowing situation. Our hearts go out to Hughes’ family, and we at LowKick MMA pray that he continues to improve.

Matt Hughes’ longtime manager manager Mont Cox has a positive update on the UFC star’s condition after he was involved in an accident with an oncoming train in Illinois early yesterday.

Cox told MMA Fighting that he had been talking with Hughes’ brother Mark and doctors are “hopeful and optimistic” about his condition:

“He is awake, but eyes closed,” Cox said. “Can squeeze hands.”

It seems Hughes isn’t out of the woods just yet, but seemingly there is some light at the end of the tunnel for him, his family and friends, and his fans.

MMA was thrown into an upheaval when news came that Hughes was involved in the harrowing accident where his truck was hit by an oncoming train as it crossed the tracks at approximately 10:45 in the morning. A few specific details of the crash were released per The State Journal-Register, and the Illinois State Police further elaborated on the crash by describing that Hughes had approached a “railroad grade crossing marked with crossbucks” in the truck. The truck crossed the tracks “directly in front of a train and the train struck the passenger side of the truck.”

The 43-year-old former UFC welterweight champion was then airlifted to nearby HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois, and they issued an official press release Friday evening:

“Raymond, Illinois – Officials with the Illinois State Police (ISP) are currently investigating a serious injury crash on Beelers Trail in Montgomery County.

“At approximately 10:45 a.m. a pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Beelers Trail approaching a railroad grade crossing marked with crossbucks.  The driver of the truck crossed the railroad tracks directly in front of a train and the train struck the passenger side of the truck.

“The driver of the truck, Matt Hughes, age 43 of Hillsboro, Illinois, was seriously injured.  He was transported to a Springfield hospital via Arch Air Medical Services.  Officers with the ISP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit are currently investigating the crash.

“No further information is available.”

HSHS also released an update later on Twitter:

“SPRINGFIELD–Former UFC fighter and Hillsboro native Matt Hughes was airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital in the noon hour on Friday, June 16, 2017. The HSHS St. John’s Regional Trauma Team stabilized him and continues to help him in his recovery.

“Hughes’ family asks that you respect their privacy during this difficult time. They ask that you keep Matt in your thoughts and prayers”

So while the MMA world awaits a hopeful recovery from the hard-charging 170-pound legend, the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit are actively investigating the root cause of the crash and details surrounding it, but have released no further updates as of this morning.

Retired MMA fighter Matt Hughes is “awake and responsive” after his truck crashed into a moving train Friday.

The update came from the former fighter’s manager, Monte Cox, who also told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani on Saturday the doctors are “optimistic and hopeful” about Hughes, via Helwani’s colleague Marc Raimondi.

Although Hughes’ eyes are still closed, Cox said the fighter “can squeeze hands.”

The incident occurred in Illinois, and Raimondi cited a police report stating the train hit the passenger side of Hughes’ truck after he crossed the tracks in front of it.

The UFC shared a message on its Twitter account:

Hughes was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2010 and won two welterweight titles throughout his career with the organization.

More details have emerged regarding former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes’ tragic accident this morning.

It was first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that Hughes was airlifted to a nearby hospital in his hometown after being involved in a collision with a train while driving his truck. UFC President Dana White revealed that Hughes was suffering from ‘head trauma’ after the event:

“Apparently he has head trauma,” White said. “His family is traveling to him now.”

The UFC confirmed the news via Twitter by sending out their thoughts to the Hughes family.

Soon after, an official statement was released by Marcia Martinez of The State Register-Journal who states that Hughes actually drove his truck directly onto the tracks where the train was about to pass, before a collision occurred on the passenger’s side of the vehicle:

“Hughes, 43, was taken to a Springfield hospital by helicopter. His condition was not immediately available, but Illinois State Police described his injuries as serious.

Illinois State Police said Hughes was heading east on Beelers Trail about 10:45 a.m. and crossed the railroad tracks directly in front of the train. The train struck the passenger side of the truck.

The crossing was marked only with a sign, state police said.

Officers with the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating the crash.”

An official press release has been issued by the Springfield hospital that Hughes was transported to regarding the matter:

“Raymond, Illinois – Officials with the Illinois State Police (ISP) are currently investigating a serious injury crash on Beelers Trail in Montgomery County.
