Not all Bostonians are excited to have the UFC Fight Night 26: Mauricio Rua vs. Chael Sonnen in their city, especially when it comes to the children having access to the event. Boston City Council President Stephen Murphy made it clear he is not a fan of mixed martial arts and what he believes it teaches children.
The councilman recently sponsored a citywide petition that would ban minors from attending mixed martial arts events within Boston. The ban would keep children from the event even if parents or guardians over the age of 18 accompanied them.
I filed a resolution not so much for the behavior in the cage, as the behavior outside of the ring of some of the stars of the UFC and there haven’t been sanctions. They are all over YouTube and the internet which is a great source of information for kids. They are promoting violence against women, teaching kids how to rape and stuff that is way over the top, the behavior. There has been no official sanction from UFC, the governing body that employs all these guys.
The YouTube video the councilman implicated in his statement was one made by former light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson. The former champ made a tongue-in-cheek video regarding how to pick up women wherein he mockingly used chloroform. Jackson later admitted the piece was made to try and get himself fired from the UFC.
Subsequent rape-related, or otherwise insensitive, remarks made by UFC fighters have come with suspensions, firings and/or fines from the company. Such comments include a television reference involving a rape van made by former bantamweight contender Miguel Torres and abusive comments against a transgender individual made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione.
The petition pushed by Murphy is backed by the Culinary Union, the same group fighting to keep the UFC out of New York. Dana White has already dismissed the social concerns of individuals like Councilman Murphy, as there appear to be no concerns over other violent sports such as boxing or football within the city or state.
While the comments are sure to rile up some UFC/MMA fans, the councilman is not wholly ignorant to the positive aspects of the sport as well.
“It’s great for discipline, physical training and these guys are athletes. On one level, it’s really professional. It’s the level that I’m talking about, the social behavior, the anti-social behavior.”

UFC Fight Night 26 is headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and ChaelSonnen.
Each fighter will be looking to rebound from recent losses.
Shogun is coming off a loss to No. 1-ranked Alexander Gustafsson, and Sonnen is trying to get back in the win column after back-to-back losses to Anderson Silva and Jon Jones. While there is no shame in losing to any of those elite fighters, another loss will certainly hurt the veterans’ stock for future big fights.
There is certainly a lot on the line for each man on Saturday night.
Both fighters have changed up their training for this fight. Sonnen is now at Reign Training Center with Mark Munoz, and Shogun has been honing his boxing with legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach. That will add more depth to each fighters’ game heading in to the important bout.
The main event caps off a 13-fight card that will help launch the new 24-hour sports network, Fox Sports 1. It is a huge honor, and that will come with a lot of pressure. The Boston crowd will be excited when the two longtime contenders meet up in the main event.
Come back for live play-by-play and analysis from the night’s main event: Shogun Rua vs. ChaelSonnen.

UFC Fight Night 26 will help launch the new 24-hour sports network, Fox Sports 1.
In the main event, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and ChaelSonnen will battle in a light heavyweight tilt. Both fighters are looking to rebound from recent losses, and the winner will be back in the mix. The loser of this bout will slip in to irrelevance for the foreseeable future.
The co-main event features two top 10 heavyweights. No. 5-ranked Alistair Overeem and No. 8-ranked Travis Browne will try to make a case for being mentioned in title contention. This fight will likely end before the judge’s scorecards.
Also in action, two key bantamweight bouts featuring three top five talents. No. 2-ranked Urijah Faber battles IuriAlcantara, and No. 3-ranked Michael McDonald goes toe-to-toe with No. 5-ranked Brad Pickett.
UFC Fight Night 26 is filled with exciting fight after exciting fight. Bleacher Report will be here all evening to provide coverage and analysis for each and every fight from Boston.

It was a statement that likely perplexed fans and probably gave VitorBelfort a brain aneurysm, but Dana White made it clear he felt ChaelSonnen was the top dog in the UFC middleweight division.
The assertion came during an interview with Boston.com’s Steve Silva at the Boston Sports Live studios. White spoke on the upcoming Sonnen vs. Mauricio Rua bout at UFC Fight Night 26 on August 17, and responded to the notion that some fans questioned Sonnen getting a marquee fight following two consecutive losses.
“First of all, people are ridiculous,” White said in his standard blunt fashion.
“ChaelSonnen‘s two losses are to the two best pound-for-pound [fighters]. When you lose, not to just champions, but to two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world… In my opinion [Chael] is still the number-one contender at 185 pounds.”
Perhaps it was simply a matter of marketing the upcoming fight, or maybe it was a statement tailored to keep a marketable fighter on the radar. Whatever the case, it is an opinion that surely does not ring true for most UFC fans.
What is likely worrisome to those who disagree with White’s opinion is that there is no true objective ranking system in the UFC, and so the president’s opinion may matter greatly. While White’s qualification “In my opinion,” may lead some to disregard his statement primafacie, in the end White likely has significant control of who receives a title shot.
While it may send shutters down the spines of many purists and hardcore fans, Dana thinking Chael is the top contender (and continued marketable commodity) could equal another middleweight title shot for the “Gangster from West Linn, Oregon.”
The UFC held a media press conference for UFC Fight Night 26 today in Boston, featuring eight of the main card fighters as well as Irish featherweight Conor McGregor and his opponent Max Hollaway, who will be facing off on the prelims. You want to talk about hype? The press conference began with the unveiling of a fan-made Conor McGregor poster, for God’s sake. Hollaway was asked how he felt about all the attention that McGregor has been receiving lately, but really, that question would be better answered by main card fighters Matt Brown, Mike Pyle, Uriah Hall, and John Howard, who didn’t get a spot at the table thanks to the King of Dublin.
Some highlights from the presser…
– 1:08: The first question comes from Kevin Iole, who asks Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to explain why he hasn’t been able to string together any victories lately. So we’re off to a pretty good start.
– 8:29:Chael Sonnen think that MMA judges do a fine job overall, although “when people are judging people, it’s never fair. It’s not fair in rodeo, it’s not fair in gymnastics, and we’ve got problems in this sport.”
– 10:35: “Dere’s two tings I really like dadiew, and that’s whoop ass and look good, and I’m doin’ wunnadem right now, and Saturday night I’m gonna do deeudda.” – McGregor
