In 2005, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was a man who would not be denied.

He took the Pride FC middleweight division by storm, defeating Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona to claim the 2005 Pride Middleweight Grand Prix title, not to mention the mantle of greatest middleweight in the world.

He was pure Chute Boxe, cut from the same cloth as stable-mate Wanderlei Silva, and he was young to boot.

The world was his oyster, and he was devouring it all with relish.

Hard to believe that in 2013, Shogun is 3-3 in his last six bouts in the UFC.

Since he handed Lyoto Machida his first loss en route to claiming the UFC light heavyweight title, Shogun has lost every other fight. His last bout was a decision loss to Alexander Gustafsson, which was only two fights removed from Rua‘s war with Dan Henderson.

And on August 17 at UFC Fight Night, he’s going to fight a man who has the perfect style to defeat him: Chael Sonnen.

Make no mistake about it: This is a very winnable fight for Sonnen. His takedown game is still among the top of the division, and he’s gritty as hell. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Sonnen will take Shogun down every round and grind out a decision victory.

And that could be costly for Shogun.

Right now, he’s a man at a crossroads in his career. If he wins, his name regains some of that luster, which is all important.

If he loses, given the depth of the division, his name is going to be mentioned in the same sentence as the phrase “gatekeeper.”

That isn’t to say he couldn’t turn his career around. He’s only 31 years old with a wealth of experience.

But a loss to Sonnen would drop him many rungs down the ladder. And worse, it would make him look far older than he is.

When you consider the names in the division—men like Henderson, Machida, Gustafsson, Phil Davis, Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, Rashad Evans and reigning champion Jon Jones—Shogun is on the outer edge as it is.

He’s already lost to four of the Top 10. If Sonnen, a man who hasn’t posted a victory at light heavyweight in many years, manages to defeat him, Shogun would suddenly look like a man waiting at the bus stop.

Yet still, there is something about Shogun—something raw and dangerous. Every single victory he has earned in the UFC has come via KO/TKO. This fact makes him watchable, no matter how many fights he loses.

Will that be enough to keep him in the UFC should he lose to Sonnen? It probably would, given that White would hate to see Shogun added to the Bellator roster.

Still, posting more losses than victories hurts a fighter in the UFC. In the world of boxing, a big-name fighter like Shogun could get some tune-up fights to rebuild his career. He does not have that option under the Zuffa banner.

Many committed fans know Shogun and won’t be quick to write him off, but the public at large is fickle.

Add to that the amount of attention a fight with Sonnen draws due to the American’s gift for gab, and a loss would be a public affair. A fighter never wants to look powerless for 15 minutes, and being trapped under Sonnen for that long is not the image Rua wants to send to the millions of Fox viewers.

So, where would a loss to Sonnen leave him?

For starters, it would leave him looking vulnerable to up-and-coming fighters who would love to build a name out of his ruin. As far as the buying public is concerned, he would be barely visiblejust out of the corner of their eye.

When you examine Sonnen, he is a basic fighter, nearly one-dimensional. He’s just so good at takedowns and maintaining top position that he doesn’t need to do much more to win.

If Shogun loses to that species of fighter, then he is going to be forced to re-examine his skill set and make some changes. He will have lost five of his last eight, and at that point, ignorance is no longer bliss.

All fighters go through periods of change; those who can adjust see a return to winning ways.

He already had to fight hard as a young man to get into the spotlight. He doesn’t want to wage that kind of war again as an older man.

If he doesn’t want to go back to the drawing board, Shogun needs to beat Sonnen.

August is a stacked month for the UFC.

Things kick off on Saturday night with UFC 163. The main event features Jose Aldo defending his featherweight title against Chan Sung Jung, “The Korean Zombie.”

However, that is only the beginning, with three more events in the month.

The highlight is the first event on Fox Sports 1. Chael Sonnen and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will square off in a light heavyweight tilt in Boston boasting an undercard stacked with competitive and compelling fights.

UFC Fight Night 27 and UFC 164 close out the month. The title pictures will be rearranged: some fighters will emerge as new contenders while others will fall out of the discussion as they show themselves to be mere pretenders.

These are those men, and women, for the month of August.

Chael Sonnen: Beating Shogun Rua Will Finally Add a UFC Champion to His Resume

Chael Sonnen may get labeled as a brash trash-talker about 99 percent of the time, but he’s also an excellent analyst who has paid respect to a number of his opponents.

When he was matched up with former WEC champion and decorated Marine Brian Stann ahead of their fight at UFC 136, Sonnen didn’t have a bad word to say about him.

The same can be said about his next opponent, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who meets “The American Gangster” at UFC Fight Night 26 on Fox Sports 1 on August 17.

While Sonnen has had beef with more than a few Brazilians over the years, he has nothing but good things to say about Rua. What Sonnen wants to accomplish by facing him is to beat a former UFC champion—something he has yet to do in his MMA career.

“He’s an excellent fighter. He’s won everything there is to win including the UFC,” Sonnen told Bleacher Report recently. “I have beat every champion of every company there’s ever been, every one of them—except the UFC champion. I’ve never beat a UFC champion, this will be a chance to do that.”

He does take a chance during the interview to land a couple of shots at Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, who was supposed to face Rua at UFC 161 before dropping out due to injury.

Check out the interview with Sonnen, including his comments on why he switched training camps and how he enjoys working with new head coach Mark Munoz.

Coincidence Much? Chael Sonnen Returning to Middleweight After “Fight Night” Bout With Shogun Rua

(Referee Yves Lavigne scrambles to clean up the pool of Vaseline he dumped on the canvas to turn Sonnen’s perfectly-timed spinning backfist into a subject of parody at UFC 148. Photo via Getty.)

We are shocked, Potato Nation. SHOCKED WE TELLS YOU.

For reasons that are not yet understandable despite being clearly explained to us, P4P G.O.A.T., multi-division UFC champion, possessor of the arms and the charms, the hefty lefty, the flyin hawaiian, the Juggernaut, bitch, Chael Phinneus Sonnen Esq., recently announced that he will be returning to the middleweight division after he defeats Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at Fight Night: Sonnen vs. Shogun on August 17th.

It’s a goddamn travesty is what it is. As we all know, Sonnen was last “defeated” by light heavyweight “champion” Jon Jones via technical knock out (emphasis on “technical”) at UFC 159 in a fight that he would have undoubtedly won had referee Keith Peterson not been in Jones’ pocket and prematurely stopped the fight. So discouraged by the evident corruption at 205, Sonnen broke the news of his middleweight return on UFC Tonight yesterday:

I’ve moved to Southern California and am training at Reign with Mark Munoz. My new contract, which is a five-fight deal, was finalized today.

I’ll return to middleweight after beating Shogun. There are two guys I want to get matched up with: Vitor Belfort, because he’s awesome and he’s on an incredible roll. And Wanderlei Silva, who I’ve heard is going back to middleweight. The landscape has completely changed. I’ve got a new contract and I’m returning to the weight class.

“To those of you who think I am only doing this because Anderson Silva has finally been dethroned,” Sonnen continued whilst one-arming a 90 pound dumbbell and smoking a corncob pipe, “I will remind you that I am still up 5 rounds to 2 on that chickenshit.”

In even more shocking news, Chael Sonnen apparently respects (most) Brazilians now *vomits*. First he declared that “Rua seems like a really great guy” and now he’s calling Vitor Belfort “awesome.” Marriage has truly revealed some cracks in his grizzly exterior, but REGARDLESS, who would you prefer to see “The American Gangster” take on after he finishes putting a spanking on Rua?

Chael Sonnen Signs 5-Fight Deal with the UFC

Granted, Chael Sonnen didn’t get UFC president Dana White‘s least favorite Ferrari, but the Oregonian naturally seemed just as thrilled to accept his boss’ counteroffer, a new Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Sonnen, who made a comedic list of demands regarding his potential new contract at the UFC Fan Expo on July 6, announced on this week’s episode of UFC Tonight that he inked a five-fight deal with the UFC.

“The American Gangster” also announced his intentions to return to his natural weight class of 185 pounds following his bout with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night on Fox Sports 1.

After I get done with Shogun, I’m returning to middleweight. There’s two guys that I want to get matched up with. First is Vitor Belfort because he’s awesome and on an incredible roll, and the second is Wanderlei [Silva], who I’ve now found out is going back to middleweight. The landscape has completely changed. I got a new contract, and I’m returning to the weight class.

Sonnen would only tease the crowd at the UFC Fan Expo about the specifics of his potential contract. But in typical American Gangster fashion, he generated plenty of chatter in the wake of his mythical list of demands, which included such quips as: “Every fight I’m in must be a No. 1 contender fight or a title match. If I lose I get an immediate rematch until I win.” and “No media can look me in the eye or they’ll be removed from the room.”

Some believe Sonnen, who’s lost two fights in a row and three of his last five, only stays relevant because of his comedic value and his ability to sell fights.

Before his back-to-back losses to Jon Jones (light heavyweight) and Anderson Silva (middleweight) in title fights, Sonnen earned consecutive wins over Brian Stann and Michael Bisping at 185 pounds.

While some doubt what he’s got left, the experts at Bovada.com apparently still assume Sonnen possesses top-tier wrestling and ground-and-pound chops. Otherwise the aggregate betting website certainly wouldn’t have pegged the 36-year-old as a 1.45-to-1 favorite (-145) to best Rua (+115).

A former light heavyweight champ, Rua has also fallen on tough times, dropping two of his last three fights and three of his last five.

Wanderlei Silva: I Guarantee Shogun Will Retire Sonnen at UFC Fight Night 26

Fight fans are well aware of the fact that there is no love lost between UFC veterans Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen

The outspoken American has never hesitated to spit verbal venom at his Brazilian rival and “The Axe Murderer” has always been happy to fire back.

On the latest edition of UFC Tonight yesterday evening, Ariel Helwani informed the viewers that the former PRIDE champion made a bold prediction about Sonnen‘s upcoming bout with fellow Brazilian star Mauricio Rua.

A gutsy claim indeed by “The Axe Murderer,” considering “Shogun” is just 2-2 since losing the UFC light heavyweight strap to current champ Jon Jones at UFC 128 in March 2011.

Even the most die-hard PRIDE fans (PRIDE is where Rua won the 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix) have begun to question if the Brazilian slugger’s best days are behind him after posting just a 5-5 record in the UFC.

In all fairness, though, “The American Gangster” has lost three of his past five bouts (twice to Anderson Silva, one to Jones), and also has an even record inside the Octagon (6-6).

However, it’s also worth noting that Sonnen is 7-1 in his past eight non-title matchups.

Ironically, it once seemed like a forgone conclusion that Silva and Sonnen would headline the UFC’s first event on the FOX Sports 1 network on August 17.

Funny how a couple of months can change things, as Wanderlei also allegedly told Helwani that Sonnen is old news and not on his level, so he no longer has any intention of settling their differences inside the cage (via MMA Fighting).

Has Silva called a massive upset in the making or is Shogun’s style tailor-made for Sonnen to take him down and beat him up for three rounds?
