Well respected referee Herb Dean has drawn the assignment as the third man in the cage for Saturday’s UFC 128 main event pitting champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua against challenger Jon Jones.

New Jersey state athletic control board legal counsel Nick Lembo informed MMA Fighting of the decision on Tuesday.

Dean is one of the most experienced officials in the sport, reportedly presiding over 4,000 matches during his career. His most recent UFC main event was in last month’s UFC 127 draw between BJ Penn and Jon Fitch in Australia.

Depending on which sportsbook you consult, Jon Jones is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of a 2-1 favorite in his fight with UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128.

Whether that’s due to Rua’s long injury layoff or Jones’ dynamic blend of skills – or, most likely, some comination of the two – it doesn’t seem to matter to the two combatants. While they disagree on what the outcome of the fight will be next Saturday night, they both seem convinced that they deserve to be thought of as the underdog.

Jon Jones: ‘I Absolutely Hate When People Mention Rashad Evans’

A few months ago Jon Jones and Rashad Evans would have both sworn up and down that they’d never fight each other, and that they wanted only the best for one another even as the two teammates both chased UFC light heavyweight gold.

But with Jones’ title shot at UFC 128 against champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua just around the corner, those days are now but a distant memory.

While Jones described Evans as a friend on Wednesday’s UFC media call, he also insisted that won’t be thinking at all about his teammate at the Jackson squad when he takes on Rua in Newark, New Jersey next Saturday night. Even if he got the title shot only after an injury knocked Evans out of the main event, Jones was in no mood to discuss the fighter he’s described in previous interviews as a mentor and a big brother.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson did indeed turn down a chance to fight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 128, Jackson confirmed via his Twitter earlier today, but it’s the reason he turned it down that gives us an insight into the current state of his MMA career.

“I turned down the fight cause of short notice,I would have 2 lose 45 lbs n 4 weeks,u would have 2 be a fighter 2 understand, life goes on,” Jackson tweeted on Tuesday.

Of course, after he turned down the chance to step in for the injured Rashad Evans, the UFC offered it to Evans’ teammate, Jon Jones, who was only too happy to seize the opportunity. So what does that tell us, aside from the fact that Jackson is walking around closer to the heavyweight limit than the light heavyweight one?

Tatame is reporting that Jon Jones was not the UFC’s first choice as Mauricio "Shogun" Rua’s replacement opponent for UFC 128. According to the UFC light heavyweight champion, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was offered the title shot in place Rashad Evans, who injured his knee training last week in Albuquerque, but the A-Team star declined the fight for undisclosed reasons.

“The UFC had another opponent in mind, but it didn’t work out. For some reason [Qinton Jackson] didn’t accept the title shot," Shogun explained. “I’ll have to change my training because [Jon Jones] is a lot different than Rashad. He’s much taller, which will present a great challenge. He’s been surprising everybody in the UFC — defeating everybody with ease, and it’ll be a tough fight for me."

"Smell it!"

Maybe Rampage is still waking up in cold sweats from the recurring nightmare of getting his head soccer-kicked into the fifth row by Shogun.

Anderson Silva knocks out Vitor BelfortLAS VEGAS — The incredible history of Anderson Silva adds new and dramatic chapters after seemingly every fight. He dances, he punches, he taunts, and he wins. Sometimes all at the same time.

The gifted middleweight champion extended his own UFC record win streak to 13 straight in the octagon with a highlight-reel front kick knockout victory over challenger Vitor Belfort at UFC 126.

After Silva’s last fight, a near-defeat against Chael Sonnen, there was a thought among some that Silva’s reign was nearing an end. Instead, his performance was reminiscent of his dominant knockouts over Forrest Griffin and James Irvin. After nearly half a round of measuring Belfort, Silva snapped his left leg forward, catching Belfort flush under the jaw. Belfort crashed backwards and looked out of it, but referee Mario Yamasaki gave Belfort a chance to recover. Silva didn’t. He jumped all over Belfort, landing a right and left on the jaw that finished yet another contender.
