Max Holloway would entertain a champion vs. champion fight against UFC lightweight title holder Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Las Vegas-based promotion has already attempted to book this fight before earlier this year.

Holloway almost fight Khaib back in April at UFC 223 once the fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib was canceled due to Ferguson suffering an injury. UFC President Dana White got Holloway to take the fight on short notice but Max was pulled the day of the weigh-ins by the commission.

Following the UFC featherweight champion successfully retaining his title over Brian Ortega in the headliner of UFC 233, Holloway spoke about his future. White has gone on record by stating that this would be Holloway’s last fight at featherweight.

The game plan would be for him to move to lightweight. Thus, at the post-fight presser, Holloway spoke about a potential showdown against Khabib.

“Khabib is another undefeated fighter,” Holloway said (H/T to MMAfighting). “I got this niche, I guess. I just gave an undefeated fighter his first loss. So maybe that one might excite me the most. We were supposed to have that one. So we’ll see what happens. I don’t know. I ain’t picky. Feed me. They all can get it.”

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway did his best to save the day after Tony Ferguson pulled out of his lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at April 7’s UFC 223, but weight cutting issues prevented him from doing so.

After medical officials deemed him unfit to compete, Holloway is moving on and looking forward to his next fight, which he’s hoping will take place at the blockbuster UFC 226 event this summer.

Holloway last defended his belt against Jose Aldo for a second time at UFC 218 late last year, and since his removal from UFC 223 wasn’t injury-related unlike his UFC 22 withdrawal a month prior, ‘Blessed’ is ready to go.

The obvious candidate for Holloway’s next title defense is Brian Ortega, who replaced Holloway and knocked out the always-durable Frankie Edgar at UFC 222.

Holloway (19-3) is gunning for a spot on UFC 226 on July 7, which will feature a super fight between light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.

Holloway would have had the chance to win the lightweight title if his weight cutting hadn’t prevented him from taking on Nurmagomedov, who ultimately took on Al Iaquinta and defeated him to win the interim UFC lightweight strap.

UFC 223 is set to be a huge event despite not having the original main event that had been advertised over the past few weeks.

There was a fear that Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov could be canceled and it turned into a reality.

The promotion had been promoting this lightweight title fight at the UFC 223 pay-per-view as their next big event. The trends were there for it to be the biggest thus far this year.

There was some concern that it wouldn’t do as well once it was revealed that Ferguson wouldn’t be able to compete due to injury.

The UFC was able to talk featherweight champion Max Holloway into accepting the fight and go for history as if he beats Nurmagomedov then he would be a two-division champion.

UFC President Dana White went on record by stating at Wednesday’s (April 4, 2018) press conference that this event is the biggest trending fight since UFC 205.

“The great thing about us being able to pull this off and him stepping up is this thing is a sellout on Saturday and all the trending for pay-per-view (PPV), this is the biggest fight since UFC 205,” said White (transcript courtesy of MMA Mania).

UFC 205, which took place back in 2016, featured Conor McGregor’s history-making win over Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title.

This event also beats out UFC 207 which marked Ronda Rousey’s highly-anticipated return only to be dominated by UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes in the main event.

UFC 207 also featured a co-main event bantamweight title fight between Cody Garbrandt and Dominick Cruz that did 1.1 million PPV buys.

The latest big event was UFC 214 that saw a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier that reportedly raked in 860,000 buys. UFC 205 pulled in 1.5 PPV buys.

A rematch between Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jedrzejczyk will serve as the co-main event of UFC 223.

Rounding out the five bout main card is Al Iaquinta vs. Paul Felder in a lightweight bout, Michael Chiesa vs. Anthony Pettis in a lightweight bout, and Renato Moicano vs. Calvin Kattar in a featherweight bout.

Max Holloway and Khabib Nurmagomedov got rather lively at Wednesday’s press conference in Brooklyn just days ahead of the lightweight title fight at UFC 223.

Nurmagomedov was complementary of Holloway’s featherweight run, but made a point of differentiating his reason to fight from his opponent’s:

“I want to explain to you guys the difference between money and legacy. He fights for money. I fight for legacy. It’s different.”

“I watched all his opponents. Twelve-fight win streak. Aldo, Pettis, Jeremy Stephens, Ricardo Lamas, nobody like me. Look at his run. Nobody like Max Holloway. No one like me! We on the same boat. No one is like me. There’s levels to this. I fought no one like him, he fought no one like me. We’re going to find out Saturday night. It is what it is.”

Holloway exuded confidence heading into what could be the biggest fight of his life, one that he only took on six days notice against a bigger, undefeated opponent.

“Yes! One-hundred, I wouldn’t be sitting here if I didn’t. Who in their right mind goes into a fight they think they’re going to lose? I would have made good money defending this (featherweight) title. I would have waited a couple of months. This is a legacy fight.”

Who do you see leaving UFC 223 with the lightweight belt?

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has an opportunity to be a two-weight world champion -something only Conor McGregor has done thus far – should he get past Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 this weekend.

But with McGregor about to be stripped of his second belt on Saturday, Holloway hopes a win over Nurmagomedov could lure the Irishman back for a rematch, according to Holloway’s manager, Brian Butler-Au.

Butler-Au discussed the idea during this week’s edition of The MMA Hour, and appears optimistic that this rematch could happen should Holloway win the second of McGregor’s relinquished belts:

“It’s been a funny situation with Max. He’s not somebody that has ever — he’s never gone after Conor like everybody else. He’s always been very aware of the fact that he’s not going to give that to Conor. He’s going to earn his way and he’s going to make Conor come to him, and that’s the way he’s been playing. That’s why you’ve never seen Max go out there and just blatantly call out Conor.”

“Conor will throw out a jab at him and Max will come back with a one-two on social media, and in my opinion, just decimate any verbal sparring that they’ve done, but that’s about the most of it for Max. From there, he’s earning his position, just like he did when he earned the titles. He didn’t leapfrog over anybody to earn the title. He legitimately cleaned out the division. There’s really nobody left for him to fight now, except for Brian Ortega. Even that fight, had Brian not pulled out that amazing win over Frankie, a lot of people would’ve said that he wasn’t ready yet. So, I mean, Max, like I said, he’s done it the methodical way.”

Holloway lost to McGregor during the Irishman’s epic featherweight run back in 2013 by decision, being the only man to not be finished by McGregor in that weight class.

Since then, the two have taken diverging paths, with McGregor moving up in weight and eventually taking on boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, and Holloway winning the featherweight title.

Do you expect to see McGregor’s interest in a rematch with Holloway peak should the Hawaiian win the lightweight strap on Saturday?
