Max Holloway Sounds Off On Conor McGregor’s Legal Drama

Pretty surprising response to Conor McGregor’s legal issue from Max Holloway:

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has fought Conor McGregor and as such, knows the controversial Irishman well.

Most of McGregor’s UFC colleagues have excoriated him for injuring several innocent fighters two days before April’s UFC 223 during the now-infamous Brooklyn bus attack.

Count Holloway among the very few who still wish Conor the best; the featherweight champion spoke to TMZ and gave a brutally honest yet positive response when asked about McGregor’s legal issues.

To somewhat surprising results, Hollway said he actually felt bad for “The Notorious”:

“Conor’s got some serious stuff going on and I wish nothing but the best for the guy.

”I feel bad for the guy right now with his legal issues and I hope everything goes good for him.

”As a family man to a family man, I hope everything turns out good for him.”

McGregor has been dealing with the legal fallout of his actions that day in Brooklyn ever since, having to fly to New York City for court appearances multiple times by the time he wraps it up. At the same time, he’s balancing out life as a new father, after his longtime companion Dee Devlin gave birth to their son Conor Jr. last year.

Holloway and McGregor threw down in McGregor’s seond-ever UFC fight back in 2013, with “The Notorious” leaving with a decision victory. “Blessed” hasn’t lost since that fight and has picked up the featherweight belt in McGregor’s absence.

Holloway will defend his belt against Brian Ortega at UFC 226 on July 7 while McGregor is set to return for another court date on July 26.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has an opportunity to be a two-weight world champion -something only Conor McGregor has done thus far – should he get past Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 this weekend.

But with McGregor about to be stripped of his second belt on Saturday, Holloway hopes a win over Nurmagomedov could lure the Irishman back for a rematch, according to Holloway’s manager, Brian Butler-Au.

Butler-Au discussed the idea during this week’s edition of The MMA Hour, and appears optimistic that this rematch could happen should Holloway win the second of McGregor’s relinquished belts:

“It’s been a funny situation with Max. He’s not somebody that has ever — he’s never gone after Conor like everybody else. He’s always been very aware of the fact that he’s not going to give that to Conor. He’s going to earn his way and he’s going to make Conor come to him, and that’s the way he’s been playing. That’s why you’ve never seen Max go out there and just blatantly call out Conor.”

“Conor will throw out a jab at him and Max will come back with a one-two on social media, and in my opinion, just decimate any verbal sparring that they’ve done, but that’s about the most of it for Max. From there, he’s earning his position, just like he did when he earned the titles. He didn’t leapfrog over anybody to earn the title. He legitimately cleaned out the division. There’s really nobody left for him to fight now, except for Brian Ortega. Even that fight, had Brian not pulled out that amazing win over Frankie, a lot of people would’ve said that he wasn’t ready yet. So, I mean, Max, like I said, he’s done it the methodical way.”

Holloway lost to McGregor during the Irishman’s epic featherweight run back in 2013 by decision, being the only man to not be finished by McGregor in that weight class.

Since then, the two have taken diverging paths, with McGregor moving up in weight and eventually taking on boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, and Holloway winning the featherweight title.

Do you expect to see McGregor’s interest in a rematch with Holloway peak should the Hawaiian win the lightweight strap on Saturday?

Current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has been on an absolute tear since losing to Conor McGregor back in 2013.

Holloway has remained vocal about the former champ of the featherweight division and former opponent, often taking to social media to trade barbs.

Holloway revealed the reason behind his vitriolic campaign against the Irishman to MMA Junkie:

“He’s been taking shots at me. Go tell all his fans, tell the whole world that he’s been taking shots at me. Then the one time he throws an underhand pitch – that’s a juicy ball, that chicken thing – no one was going to take it up? You’re crazy if you think ‘Blessed’ is going to let that slide. Your boy is going to slide in and let you know.

“This guy’s been picking on me. It’s like the school ground when you’re at school. If you ever get bullied, when you get sick of it, you turn around and you punch the bully in the face, and they don’t say anything. That’s what happened. It’s all right. I could not let that slide. I was giving a chance to everyone. No one was doing it, so ‘Blessed’ was going in.”

Holloway has kept busy in McGregor’s absence, defeating Jose Aldo by TKO twice to solidify his position at the top of the featherweight division, where McGregor was champion before absconding to the lightweight division and eventually boxing.

Holloway contends that unlike McGregor, who won two UFC titles but failed to defend either of them, he’s going to be a suitable titleholder until he’s pushed up to McGregor’s stagnating 155-pound division:

“I’ve got a throne to sit on and defend and show the world I’m the one. When I get pushed to 155 (pounds), we’ll see what happens. But for now my focus is on 145. I definitely think of 155 fights, but until I’m forced up there or the UFC tells me they want me up there, I’ll go. But right now it’s about keeping the 145-pound weight class in check and keep everything rolling and keep everything smooth.

Do you agree with Holloway’s assessment of McGregor?
