Max Holloway Reveals His Top Moment in MMA History Ahead Of UFC 308

Of all the epic moments in Max Holloway’s mixed martial arts career, beating the ‘King of Rio’ on his home turf tops the list.

In a matter of hours, ‘Blessed’ will attempt to create another memorable moment when he headlines UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi, challenging the promotion’s reigning and defending featherweight world champion, Ilia Topuria. It will be Holloway’s 10th title fight under the UFC banner, but even if he recaptures gold in the UAE, it won’t top the feeling of beating perhaps the greatest featherweight the sport has ever seen.

“It means a lot. There’s a saying I always heard: train till your idols become your rivals,” Holloway said in an interview with TNT Sports. Jose Aldo was an idol, even after our fights. There’s no better feeling than fighting the King of Rio in Rio and doing what I did.

“I remember after the fight, there was not one sound in the audience. Just silence. This will be my number one MMA moment, no matter what.”

Despite underdog status, Max Holloway is determined to kickstart a new title reign at UFC 308

Holloway unified the interim and undisputed featherweight titles against Aldo in Rio de Janeiro at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017. He would go on to defend the title three times, besting ‘Junior’ in a rematch before scoring wins against Brian Ortega and Frankie Edgar.

He later dropped the belt against Alexander Volkanovski but has never strayed very far from the title picture. In April, Holloway delivered yet another iconic Octagon moment when he scored a buzzer-beating KO against Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 to win the BMF title.

‘Blessed’ will attempt to do what no man has been able to thus far and hand Topuria his first career loss. Thus far, ‘El Matador’ is a perfect 15-0 and is an almost 3-to-1 favorite to come out on top against Holloway at Etihad Arena.

The upcoming pay-per-view event at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates provides a chance for UFC Featherweight Champion Ilia Topuria to further enhance his legacy on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage.

After capturing the gold this past February by brutally knocking out the previously long-reigning Alexander Volkanovski, “El Matador” is next tasked with stalling Max Holloway’s ambitions of a return to the 145-pound mountaintop.

The stakes will also be high in the co-main event, which will see former middleweight champ Robert Whittaker look to secure another shot at regaining the crown by blemishing the currently perfect professional record of Khamzat Chimaev.

Elsewhere on the UFC 308 card, Magomed Ankalaev and Aleksandar Raki? do battle for a potential shot at Alex Pereira’s light heavyweight title, Dan Ige becomes the latest threat to Lerone Murphy’s ‘O’, and middleweight prospect Shara Magomedov looks to impress once again.

Ahead of the event, all 26 fighters successfully made weight but two bouts did undergo late adjustments. Nevertheless, every fight has remained intact, and all that remained on Friday was for the athletes to face off one final time at the UFC 308 ceremonial weigh-ins!

During Max Holloway vs. Justin Gaethje, ‘Blessed’ earned one of the greatest moments in the history of the UFC. After five rounds of war, he pointed to the center of the octagon and both men began trading flurries of punches. Holloway landed a knockout blow in the closing seconds of the fight earning him the BMF title.

Blessed’ Max Holloway earned the featherweight crown with a series of wins against MMA legend Jose Aldo. He has also jumped up to lightweight for bouts against Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje, both of which earned Fight of the Year accolades.

Now, this weekend at UFC 308, Holloway will look to reclaim his featherweight thrones against the unbeaten world champion Ilia Topuria. The Spanish-Georgian is just coming off a knockout win against the top-ranked pound-for-pound athlete Alexander Volkanovski.

Reflecting on the legendary bout Max Holloway vs. Justin Gaethje, speaking in an interview with TNT Sports, ‘Blessed’ commented on his most recent win. He said:

“Crazy, man. Crazy. Shot the gate, she gave me a shot, you know. I’m a 45er. He was supposed to fight for the title next. I just shot my shot. When I saw that, he didn’t get it. They asked him, he agreed, he put his BMF title on the line, and I felt like I just couldn’t do wrong in that fight, man. I felt on.

“I felt great for every single round. Everything just felt right. I loved it. It was ten seconds, like I said. Ten seconds—we point down, I land my punch before he lands his, and the rest is history, you know? To do this on the biggest stage, the biggest card, UFC 300, it was insane, man. Crazy. Dana said it best: he sells the “What the F” moments. I’m glad I was able to deliver the most iconic one of all time, which leads us nicely to this weekend.“

The upcoming pay-per-view takes place Saturday, October 26, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The main card begins at 2 PM ET/11 AM PT, with the preliminary card starting at 10 AM ET/7 AM PT.
