Over the weekend (Sat. July 27, 2019) Max Holloway racked up another successful title defense, besting former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar after five rounds.

The pair headlined the UFC 240 pay-per-view (PPV) from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edgar was visibly upset after the defeat but vowed to come back again, stating he has plenty of fight left in him. “Blessed” recently took to Instagram and issued out a classy statement towards Edgar after the bout.

“The GOAT talk always makes me cringe. Legends can coexist. Frankie was gonna win no matter what last night because I am part Frankie. I am who I am as a father and martial artist because of some of the things I’ve learned from Frankie and coach Mark Henry.

“Proud to be Hawaiian, proud to be honorary Canadian. But if you know this sport the way us fighters know it, every champ reps a little bit of Jersey whether they like it or not because of these two legends”

With Holloway now passing the test that is Frankie Edgar, another challenge awaits. Alexander Volkanovski has emerged as the frontrunner for the next title opportunity. With a big PPV card in Australia coming up, adding such a bout to the lineup could be massive.

What do you think about Holloway’s statement after his win over Edgar?

Max Holloway defended his featherweight title for the third straight time in the main event of UFC 240. There, the Hawaiian beat Frankie Edgar by decision. With the win, he continues his case of possibly being the greatest featherweight of all-time. But, he is still eyeing the greatest fighter of all-time.

Something else he is closing in on, or perhaps past, is being the greatest fighter from Hawaii ever. Of course, many think UFC Hall of Famer, B.J. Penn is the best given what he accomplished. Being the Las Vegas-based promotions, lightweight and welterweight champion and fighting and beating some of the best to ever do it.

For UFC president, Dana White, it is hard to say if Holloway has surpassed Penn as the greatest Hawaiian fighter of all-time.

“It’s tough,” White said at the UFC 240 post-fight press conference (h/t TheBodyLock). “You know, B.J. Penn was such a huge talent. I think B.J. was so talented, he never took it as serious as he could have and should have.

“But if you look at how small that island is, and the talent that comes off that island, it’s pretty incredible. To have two of the greatest fighters ever out of Hawaii is pretty impressive.”

Regardless, both Max Holloway and B.J. Pen are currently having and had a legendary career.

Who do you think is the greatest fighter to come out of Hawaii?
