Maycee Barber has aspirations of becoming the youngest champion in UFC history. That record is currently held by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

The 21-year-old was on a roll, undefeated in her mixed martial arts (MMA) career, heading into UFC 246 last week. Barber headlined the UFC 246 preliminary card against Roxanne Modafferi. Many expected Barber to easily get the victory against the longtime MMA veteran, however, Modafferi dominated the fight for a unanimous decision win.

During the bout, Barber suffered a torn ACL that greatly impaired her ability to stand or fight properly. In fact, her father, Bucky, suggests the only reason his daughter lost to Modafferi was because of the injury. Now, Barber herself has issued a comment on the matter. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Barber said she still has eyes on becoming the youngest champion in UFC history.

”The loss has not shifted my goals in the sport at all,” Barber said. “It has added more goals to the pre-existing ones. I’m still gonna be the youngest champion in UFC history.”

Typically, a return to action from an ACL tear takes anywhere from six to nine months. With that being said, Barber is fully expecting to fight again in 2020 before the year is up.

”I am hoping to make my return and fight again by the end of 2020,” Barber said.

Barber also teased that she and Modafferi could run things back down the road. “The Future” seems desperate to prove what she and her team have been saying all along – that she’s better than “The Happy Warrior.”

”Roxanne is a phenomenal competitor, so I don’t doubt she will still be taking care of her business,” Barber said. “She and I will cross again, and I’ll have the opportunity to prove to everyone what my team and myself already know.”

Barber proceeded to detail exactly when in the fight she knew her knee had been compromised, and explained how the pain got worse over time.

”I realized that the muscles surrounding my knee were starting to want to protect it,” Barber said. “Round two started, and I realized the pain had gotten worse (and the) instability had gotten greater. I don’t remember a lot, but I remember being slow and seeing her jab come and wanting to step back.

“With that half a second extra of thinking, she caught me with the jab. I still stepped back, but my leg wasn’t there. The stability had left me.”

What do you think about Barber still wanting to be the youngest champion in UFC history after her ACL tear?

As previously mentioned, Maycee Barber’s father, Bucky, recently took to Instagram to discredit Roxanne Modafferi’s victory over his daughter this past weekend (Sat. January 18, 2020) at UFC 246.

The pair headlined the preliminary card on ESPN, where Modafferi put on a dominant performance. However, during the fight, Barber suffered a complete ACL tear, which impaired her ability to walk or fight properly. Despite putting up a valiant effort while fighting through the injury, Modafferi picked up the victory on the judges’ scorecards.

Bucky claimed on Instagram that Modafferi didn’t beat his daughter because of her skill set, but rather due to the circumstance that Barber found herself in with a torn ACL during the fight. Now, Modafferi has taken to Twitter to offer a response to Bucky’s comments. Modafferi said she understands that dads need to sometimes say “stupid” things to defend their daughters.

“Meh, fathers are supposed to be biased and say stupid things. Mine used to say, “I’m proud of you…so are you retiring yet?” Not anymore, though. ? At least she didn’t say it. I still respect Macyee for being a warrior.”

Modafferi’s win over Barber was certainly a big accomplishment for the longtime veteran. Prior to their bout, Barber was undefeated with a record of 8-0. The 21-year-old was looking to become the youngest champion in UFC history, a record currently held by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. However, with Barber suffering from the torn ACL, she’ll likely be out-of-action for the majority of the year.

As for Modafferi, she could be looking at a big opportunity next after taking out one of the UFC’s hottest prospects.

What do you make of Modafferi’s response to Barber’s father?

Roxanne Modafferi had mixed feelings about Maycee Barber speaking on the microphone at UFC 246.

Modafferi quite literally upset the odds as she defeated Barber via unanimous decision and handed “The Future” her first loss in mixed martial arts. Usually the winner of the fight talks to Joe Rogan first.

However, Barber — who notably tore her ACL during the fight — asked to have some time on the microphone first. She gave praise to Modafferi while also apologizing for the result before embracing her opponent.

Although it was a gesture with good intentions, it didn’t go down well with many.

Modafferi, herself, was not sure what to make of it especially as she felt a little dissed by what Barber said:

“Mixed feelings,” Modafferi said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “She said it was an honor to fight me and that was cool. And she said she wasn’t embarrassed about her performance because it made me shine or something. And I was like did she just diss me?

“I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt so I don’t know. Whatever. I won the fight. I believe even if she hadn’t injured her leg, I still would have taken the fight. I was beating her in the first round anyway.”

What did you think of Barber taking the mic?

‘The Future’ took to social media to address her loss and state her intentions moving forward. In an Instagram post she said.

What a life. Tonight may not have gone my way but there is not a single piece of regret in me. I am so blessed to live the life I have and I thank God everyday for the people in it. Thank you @roxyfighter for sharing the octagon with me tonight. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t plan on walking out of there 9-0 but I did what I could and tonight that wasn’t enough to get my hand raised. Huge thank you to everyone who supports me and this journey through the ups and downs. I couldn’t ask for a better team to have by my side to cheer with me when I win and wipe my tears (and blood????) when I lose. I love you all. I’ll be back (it might take a few days of healing ?)…The outcome of this fight may not have happened according to plan but my Goal of beating Jon Jones record and being the youngest champion in UFC history stays the same.”

Light-heavyweight king Jon Jones claimed his first UFC
title at 23-years-old. The Flyweight prospect Barber now faces a race against time
to rehab from injury and begin her climb up the UFC rankings towards the 125lb
title.
