UFC women’s flyweight prospect Maycee Barber believes she has what it takes to not only defeat Weili Zhang, but dominate her.

Zhang became the new women’s strawweight champion following an impressive first-round TKO victory over Jessica Andrade back in August. “Magnum” currently holds a 20-1 record and hasn’t suffered defeat since her pro debut back in 2013.

But Barber — who takes on Gillian Robertson at UFC Boston this Friday — believes she is more than equipped to outclass the Chinese champion:

“Right away? I’d move back down to 115 and take that one first,” she said at a recent media scrum when asked which title fight she would hypothetically take. “Only because I really believe that’s the one that right now I could go in and just dominate that fight.

“Valentina would be a back-and-forth and I truly believe I would take that title still. But I’d rather have it be a beatdown than a back-and-forth brawl.”

There’s no denying that Barber is confident. After all, she’s still only 21 and already holds two UFC victories via TKO as well as a 7-0 record.

Aptly nicknamed “The Future”, Barber also has plans on breaking Jon Jones’ record for being the youngest UFC champion of all time.

However, if Barber wants to achieve all her goals, she’ll have to make sure she gets the job done against Robertson on Friday.

UFC strawweight prospect Maybee Barber hopes she gets to be the last opponent on Paige VanZant’s current contract.

VanZant currently has one fight remaining on her deal but speculation about her fighting future has increased. That’s because “12 Gauge” recently claimed she made more money with Instagram posts than she does fighting in the Octagon.

For Barber, that’s simply because VanZant isn’t fighting. Regardless, even though Barber is booked against Gillian Robertson next, “The Future” hopes to be VanZant’s next opponent:

“Now she makes more money outside than she does in fighting because she’s not fighting,” Barber said in an interview with The Score. “As far as her last fight on her contract, that’s my fight. If she wants to fight in Bellator, if she wants to move out, she can fight me on her last fight on her contract, or she can never fight again, and that’s up to her.”

VanZant recently responded to Barber’s callouts, stating that she found them disrespectful and that she wouldn’t reward Barber with a fight as a result. Barber believes it’s simply a case of her ducking opponents.

And if she continues to do that, she is not holding up her part of the deal with the UFC:

“I believe that, because that’s how she got that was because of the UFC,” Barber said of VanZant’s opportunities being a result of the UFC. “She would not be anywhere that she is right now without the UFC and what she’s done, and what they’ve given her, so she didn’t hold up her end of the bargain.

“When the UFC signed her, I think they saw someone who had very good marketability, and they thought could fight, and she’s not holding up her end of the deal. She’s not fighting. She’s not fighting anybody and she’s trying to duck all these girls – and she’s ducking me.”

Hopefully this is the fight that happens next. That is, provided Barber gets past Robertson.

An exciting women’s flyweight bout between Maycee Barber and Gillian Robertson is in the works for UFC Boston.

That’s according to sources close to ESPN, who state that contracts have not been signed yet, but both sides have agreed to the bout.

Robertson is coming off an impressive TKO win over Sarah Frota at UFC 240 this past weekend. It marked her fourth finish in as many UFC fights. Barber, meanwhile, is a finisher herself with two TKO victories in two fights since making her UFC debut last year. She most recently TKO’d J.J. Aldrich at UFC Nashville earlier this year.

UFC Boston takes place October 18 at the TD Garden in Boston. The event will be headlined by a pivotal light heavyweight encounter between former middleweight champion Chris Weidman and rising contender Dominick Reyes.

Expect more fight announcements for the card in the coming weeks.
