UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez put on the performance of a lifetime against Rafael dos Anjos. The Brazilian was blazing his own trail to greatness with wins over Donald Cerrone, Ben Henderson, Nate Diaz and Anthony Pettis. When he met ‘The Silent Assassin’ on July 7 though, the five-fight winning streak would come to an end. Alvarez touched the chin with a vicious flurry of punches and the belt changed hands to the former Bellator champ.

Before facing dos Anjos in Sin City, Alvarez had seen his first three UFC fights go to decision. Losing one of those fights, a burner against Donald Cerrone, the 32-year old from Philadelphia seemed to be having trouble finding his stride. Following his 2-1 start, the victory over ‘RDA’ to win the belt must have tasted that much better.

Decisions

Speaking during a great walk-and-talk with Ariel Helwani in his old Philly neighbourhood, Eddie Alvarez discussed a number of subjects in length. As well as the potential fight with Conor McGregor, the hard hitting lightweight boss talked about his performances before fighting Rafael dos Anjos.

“When I fought Rafael dos Anjos I was able to put on that kind of fight. People want to see the most vicious and crazy finishes. When you match up two of the best guys in the world, that doesn’t always happen. When you’re fighting these guys, with such a small margin for error, it’s not often you get that magic.”

Since Alvarez took the lightweight title and Conor McGregor defeated Nate Diaz in their UFC 202 rematch, a lot of talk has surrounded a potential shot for ‘The Notorious’ at 155 pounds. Alvarez addressed these reports, stating nothing is official yet, and also saying he could have done better at UFC 202 with a ‘five dollar’ training camp.

“We’re not anywhere just yet, just rumours and talks. Nobody has given the call or anything like that. I think it would be a little bit foolish (for him). When I look at the history of his opponents that were picked, I’m not one of those guys. I want the fight, 100 percent. If it was up to me, I think it could happen. It’s up to the powers that be, I’ll leave it to them. I’ll get ready. I think (McGregor) is a guy that’s fortunate to have a little country on his back.”

“I’m more about whats real, and I think he’s more about perception. Te perception is becoming more important about what really is. That’s why I don’t think they’ll take the fight. If perception is the most important thing, they won’t go after me. They’ll go after the guy that looks like the best in the world, but really isn’t. In a sparring room, there’s always a guy we call ‘the rest round.’ That guy you grab when you’re tired and say ‘hey come on man let’s do a rest round.’ He’s the rest round not just for me, for anyone in my gym. I was impressed by the first seven minutes (of Diaz vs. McGregor 2). The rest of it looked sloppy. It didn’t look like he’d spent $300K training for it. I could have done that for $5. It’s comical, it’s laughable for a guy like him to say he’d finish me.”

Michael Bisping: I Think Eddie Alvarez Destroys Conor McGregor

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping faced stacked odds against Luke Rockhold on June 4. UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping faced stacked odds against Luke Rockhold on June 4. Although ‘The Count’ is one of the longest-serving current UFC stars, he’d been beaten rather dominantly against ‘Rocky’ already. Following the 2014 defeat to Rockhold, Bisping compiled three straight wins before taking the title shot on short notice. The British slugger was obviously the underdog heading in to UFC 199, but he made very short work of Rockhold.

Knocking out his foe in the first round, ‘The Count’ finally tasted UFC title glory after 10 years of trying. After 26 fights for the promotion, this was Bisping’s first title fight. Facing such staggering odds made his title glory that much sweeter. Since rising to the top the trash talking Englishman has really started to let his feelings be known. Currently slated to face his fierce rival Dan Henderson at UFC 204, ‘The Count’ has not limited his banter to ‘Hendo.’

Trash Talk

First off we heard accusations of steroid abuse aimed at Dan Henderson. Then, in a recent snippet via BloodyElbow ‘The Count’ absolutely blasted Georges St-Pierre. Having called out the former welterweight champion 24 hours after winning the middleweight strap, the brash English native claimed GSP was a ‘pussy’ for not taking the fight.

“Quit being a p**sy Georges. I officially challenge Georges St-Pierre to a fight in Toronto in December. I’ll fight him at 180lbs. Right here, right now, I challenge him.”

McGregor

The subject of UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is always a popular one. After defeating Nate Diaz in a classic war at UFC 202, doors to a title fight at 155 pounds were opened by Dana White. The UFC president revealed ‘The Notorious’ would not be stripped, but would have to vacate the 145-pound belt if he wanted to pursue a title in another weight class. Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is baying for that fight, and Bisping doesn’t fancy the Irishman’s chances. Here’s what ‘The Count’ told The Daily Star:

“I think looking at that last fight, he does not want to fight Eddie Alvarez at 155. I think Alvarez kills him man. He’ll just take him down and destroy him. I’m not saying that to be mean, I just think stylistically. I like Conor. Conor is incredible, he’s done amazing things for this sport. He’s brought so many eyes on to it, he’s making so much money and he’s exciting as hell. He brings excitement.”

Canelo Alvarez Calls Out Conor McGregor For Boxing Match

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has done a great job of putting his name in everyone’s mouths. First the Irish star became hot property in mixed martial arts. UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has done a great job of putting his name in everyone’s mouths. First the Irish star became hot property in mixed martial arts. After a successful UFC debut in 2013, ‘The Notorious’ put the entire 145-pound division on blast. Calling out Jose Aldo from his very first fight, McGregor vowed to dethrone the long-reigning Brazilian, but few believed him at that stage. Following five more fights, McGregor stood opposite ‘Scarface’ at UFC 194.

As McGregor had predicted, Aldo fell from the first clean strike. The only ever UFC champion to that point had been demolished in 13 seconds. The next sequence of events would keep the Irishman away from the featherweight division and yet to defend the belt to this day. Originally meant to face Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, McGregor instead fought Nate Diaz. The Stockton bad boy rocked the boat in a big way, defeating the UFC’s biggest star by submission.

McGregor would remain at welterweight for the immediate rematch with Diaz, but not before a drawn out period of drama. After neglecting to attend the UFC 200 press conference, the Irish striker was dropped from the main event and fell in to a feud against the promotion. This in turn led to a somewhat theatrical beef with boxing great Floyd Mayweather.

Since he became the flavour of the month in the boxing world, ‘The notorious’ got in to it with the stars of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Once again proving his reach has no bounds, McGregor was making front page news with 10-word statements about pro wrestling. His saga in the boxing world is far from over though. After his UFC 202 victory over Diaz, former WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez piped up.

Canelo-McGregor

McGregor vs. Canelo

McGregor had first mentioned Canelo when the Mexican boxer vacated the WBC title. Choosing to drop one pound to face Liam Smith instead of Gennady Golovkin, Canelo took some flack from McGregor for ‘cherry picking.’ The decision has indeed caused controversy among boxing fans, and after UFC 202 Alvarez blasted ‘The Notorious’ for having poor cardio.

Taking it one step further during a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, as quoted by MMAMania, Alvarez issued a straight challenge to McGregor:

“If he wants to try out boxing, then anytime he wants. If he wants to come over to this side of the world and try boxing, anytime he wants, to see that it’s not as easy as he thinks.”
