Its been a long and troublesome road for the UFC’s hunt for a legitimate female 145-pound champion.

Germaine de Randamie defeated former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm back in February to become the division’s inaugural champion, however, after refusing to fight Cris “Cyborg” Justino in her first defense due to her history with performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), the promotion stripped “The Iron Lady” of her title.

Cyborg and Invicta FC featherweight champion Megan Anderson were expected to go head-to-head for the vacant UFC strap, however, Anderson was forced to pull out of the bout due to reasons not yet disclosed. Anderson was replaced by Invicta FC bantamweight champ Tonya Evinger who will step in to fill the void.

UFC President Dana White recently sat down with MMA Junkie to discuss the crazy ride to crowning a 145-pound champ, and said that ‘the least we can do’ is grant Justino a fight for the title:

“She’s had a rough go here in the UFC,” White said. “She hasn’t been thrilled with things that have been said, things that have been done. And to be honest with you, :  :  ‘Cyborg.’ So the least we can do is get our (expletive) together and get this woman a fight for the title.”

As for Anderson’s replacement, Evinger, White believes that the Invicta 135-pound champ is a woman who is going to step into the Octagon and bring the fight right to the Brazilian powerhouse – something others have been wary of in the past:

“(Anderson) had some personal problems and couldn’t do this fight,” he said. “And Tonya Evinger is a girl who has been around for a long time. She’s tough, she’s gritty, and what I’m really looking for is, I want a woman that’s going to go out and fight ‘Cyborg.’ I believe Tonya Evinger is that woman. We’ll see.”

White then went on to claim that Cyborg ‘owns’ the 145-pound division, and that any woman looking to fight at featherweight can expect to be standing opposite Justino inside the Octagon come fight night:

“We make it very clear: When you go into that division, you know who you’re going to be fighting. Basically, ‘Cyborg’ owns that division. You go into the 145-pound division and you’re fighting for a belt, you’re going to fight ‘Cyborg. “We signed ‘Cyborg,’ we made a commitment to ‘Cyborg,’ and not everything is easy and not everything is as fun as other divisions or whatever, but we made a commitment to this woman.”

Why The UFC Messed Up With Women’s Featherweight

Earlier this year, the UFC announced the installment of its twelfth division: a women’s featherweight division. The only problem, however, is that it’s barely a division, and it may be fair to say that the UFC made a mistake by creating this division.

To be honest, the division was created for one reason, or rather for one fighter, and that’s former Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg Justino. The Brazilian slugger has long been considered to be one of the very best female fighters on the planet, if not the best period. She is also a massive featherweight, which is why her debut in the UFC came long after many had hoped it would.

Cyborg has had two UFC bouts to date, with both ending in stoppage victories for her, but with both also taking place at a catchweight of 140 pounds, and even at that weight limit, she had difficulty making weight. Given the star power she possesses, the UFC essentially created a division for her, which does make a bit of sense, although she did not fight for the inaugural title, which was odd.

MMA Junkie / USA Today Sports

At UFC 208, which took place this past February from Brooklyn, New York, Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie, two natural bantamweights, fought for the newly invented women’s featherweight title. This was the first mistake regarding the division, as the UFC essentially took two fighters from a different weight class and booked them against each other in a title fight because a main event was needed rather than wait for the fighter in which the division was created for.

The problems didn’t stop there, however. De Randamie went on to beat Holm in a lackluster and somewhat controversial bout before refusing to fight Cyborg and recently being stripped of her title.

After the decision to strip de Randamie of the title, the UFC essentially had a division, if it can even be considered that, without a champion and without a list of viable contenders.

Obviously Cyborg was going to fight for the now-vacant title, but it was difficult to find her an opponent because, once again, there are no contenders waiting. Eventually, she was booked against Invicta featherweight champion Megan Anderson at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017, which was an intriguing fight because Cyborg would actually be taking on a legitimate featherweight and contender.

Unfortunately, Anderson was forced to withdraw from the bout earlier this week, which led the UFC to replace her with Invicta bantamweight champion Tonya Evinger. While Evinger was likely the best option, and she certainly deserves credit for stepping up to face Cyborg when very few fighters are willing to, it seems as if we are back to square one, as Cyborg will essentially be fighting a smaller fighter.

It simply seems as if there isn’t a division at 145 pounds. Instead, it seems as if Cyborg is the rightful champion, and she is undoubtedly a championship caliber fighter, and the UFC will constantly be faced with the task of finding her an opponent, whether that be a be a featherweight, a bantamweight, or simply any female fighter willing to face the Brazilian.

In your opinion, did the UFC make a mistake by creating this division?

The UFC’s new female featherweight division continues to hit some bumps in the road on their way to finding a solid title-holder.

Earlier this month it was announced that former Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino would be taking on Megan Anderson for the vacant 145-pound strap, after inaugural champion Germaine de Randamie was stripped due to refusal to defend. Now, however, that fight will no longer happen.

Per a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Anderson has been forced to pull out of the contest due to reasons not yet disclosed, and current Invicta FC bantamweight champion Tonya Evinger will fill the void left behind by Anderson.

Evinger is currently on a 10 fight win streak, not having lost since July of 2011 when former UFC bantamweight title challenger Sara McMann took home a unanimous decision win over her. The 36-year-old has been competing in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) since 2006, and will finally get her crack at the UFC next month.

Cyborg hasn’t lost since her MMA debut in 2005 and has since established herself as one of the most dominant female fighters in the history of the sport. She is currently on a 17 fight winning streak and has finished her past 11 fights via knockout.

The pair will co-headline UFC 214 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on July 29, 2017 for the vacant female featherweight title. The card is headlined by a light heavyweight title bout between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones.

Former Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris Cyborg is approaching her first-ever UFC title bout next month (Sat., July 29, 2017) when she takes on Megan Anderson for the vacant female 145-pound title in the co-main event of UFC 214.

Justino made her UFC debut back in May of 2016 when she met Leslie Smith inside the Octagon on the main card of UFC 198 on pay-per-view (PPV) from her hometown of Curitiba, Brazil. Cyborg won the bout via first-round knockout just after one minute into the contest. She followed that up with a second round finish over then-UFC newcomer Lina Lansberg last September in Brasilia, Brazil.

Cyborg has long advocated for a female 145-pound weight class to be implemented in the UFC, and she got that wish when the promotion paired former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie in the main event of UFC 208 this past February to crown the first ever women’s featherweight champ. “The Iron Lady” went on to win that contest via unanimous decision and was dubbed the first ever female 145-pound champion.

The Brazilian powerhouse was unable to partake in the historic bout due to the fact that she wasn’t given enough time to make the weight. Now, however, de Randamie has been stripped of her title due to her refusal to defend, and Cyborg now gets her crack at the gold when she takes on Megan Anderson, who has been called up from Invicta FC and vacated her own featherweight title to participate in the bout.

Anderson has won her past three fights inside the cage via early knockout, so Cyborg is taking her boxing training very serious heading into the fight. She has brought in North American Boxing Federation middleweight champ and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields for her camp, and video surfaced earlier this week of the pair’s sparing session. Check it out:

Shields took to Twitter after the session to credit Cyborg’s power and also offered her some tips to improve her striking game as well. Cyborg returned the favor by helping the boxer work on her ground game:
