After suffering three consecutive losses to Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero and Gegard Mousasi, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman finally got back to his winning ways last month in the main event of UFC on FOX 25, submitting Kelvin Gastelum on Long Island.

Weidman remains one of the division’s top contenders, although a path back to a title shot isn’t completely clear at the moment. Champion Michael Bisping hasn’t defended his title since last October, but he’s set to take on returning former longtime welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 217 on Nov. 4, 2017. The winner of that fight will likely take on interim titleholder Robert Whittaker.

While Weidman admitted that he’d ready to replace either Bisping or St. Pierre if need be, he also said that he ‘would consider’ a jump up to light heavyweight:

“My goal is to be the champ and there’s no way of me getting to have the belt for two years or more just based on other people taking their time with taking fights,” Weidman told Submission Radio. “It’s a weird place to be, it’s not interesting. I mean, if 185 doesn’t like, things don’t change, I want to maybe think about possibly going to 205. So if there’s a clear picture to a title at 205, then I would consider that. Let’s see, maybe Bisping or maybe GSP gets injured, I don’t know, and then I’ll be ready to go for November and Bisping won’t be able to scatter away from a guy like me. So that would be something that would work out for me nice for me. I’m in New York, I’m ready to go.”

Weidman has discussed a potential move up in weight in the past, and given the scarcity of the light heavyweight division, now might be the best time.

What are your thoughts on Weidman’s comments?

After months and months of speculation in regards to whether or not the fight was actually going to happen, it has now been made official that middleweight champion Michael Bisping will take on returning former longtime welterweight king Georges St. Pierre at UFC 217 on Nov. 4, 2017 from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

St. Pierre, who hasn’t competed since earning a highly controversial decision victory over Johny Hendricks in 2013, is widely considered to be the very best welterweight of all-time, but he has never competed at middleweight. If he does indeed beat Bisping, however, he will be required to defend the title at 185 pounds, as it’s stated in his contract with the UFC:

“I have to defend my title,” St-Pierre said on today’s (Aug. 14, 2017) edition of The MMA Hour. “It’s written in my contract. I have to defend my title if I win.”

“That wasn’t my initial plan, but I understand the UFC’s point of view,” he added. “They want to protect their titles. They don’t want to delay the defense of their titles, because they don’t want to make people wait.”

As far as the fight with Bisping goes, many have criticized the UFC for booking the bout given the fact that St. Pierre is a natural welterweight. “Rush”, however, admits that it’s the fight he wanted, and the fight that could offer him the biggest reward:

“That’s the fight I wanted,” St-Pierre said. “That’s the fight Michael wanted. And I think that’s the fight people wanted to see.”

“I wanted my risk to be worth it,” St-Pierre said of fighting Bisping. “I wanted to try something that I never attempted before. For me, fighting Michael Bisping is the most rewarding thing I can do right now.”

Given that he’s 36-years-old and hasn’t competed in four years, many have also wondered if St. Pierre’s return is simply a one-off, or if the Canadian star will stick around for a few fights. In regards to that, “Rush” said that the plan is to win the title before defending it against interim champion Robert Whittaker:

“You never know in advance,” St-Pierre said. “But if we follow the logic, that’s what the UFC told me. That’s what they signed me for.”

What do you make of St. Pierre’s plan?

Michael Bisping Says GSP Fight ‘Is On November 4’ In NY

UFC President Dana White has repeatedly said that the ‘ship has sailed’ on a potential middleweight title fight between champion Michael Bisping and former longtime welterweight titleholder Georges St. Pierre, but that no longer appears to be the case.

Prior to UFC 214, which took place this past weekend (July 29, 2017) in Anaheim, California, White said that St. Pierre would take on the winner of the event’s co-main event between 170-pound champion Tyron Woodley and Demian Maia. Woodley ended up winning, but White wasn’t pleased with his performance, which led him to change his tune on St. Pierre’s future.

In fact, Bisping recently said that White confirmed with him that he’ll fight St. Pierre on Nov. 4, 2017 at Madison Square Garden in New York City:

“To be honest, Dana said at the press conference last week that the Bisping-GSP ship had sailed,” Bisping said on a recent edition of his podcast. “He said the winner of Woodley vs. Maia gets GSP and I was like oh right, whatever, it would’ve been nice and a bigger payday and all that stuff, but I was just mentally drained with it all. I stopped campaigning because every time Dana would just shut it down. So I drive home later on and Dana White calls. There you go, the fight is on November 4, Madison Square Garden, Michael Bisping versus GSP.”

St. Pierre hasn’t competed since scoring a highly controversial split-decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in 2013. He went into a semi-retirement after the bout, always leaving the door open for a return before officially announcing a comeback earlier this year.

Bisping, on the other hand, shocked the world last June, knocking out Luke Rockhold on short notice at UFC 199 to become the undisputed 185-pound champion. He then defended that title with a decision victory over Dan Henderson late last year.
