Earlier this year, UFC President Dana White announced that former longtime welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre would finally be making a return to action and that he would be doing so in a middleweight title fight with 185-pound champion Michael Bisping. No date or venue was set for the bout, but a press conference featuring White, Bisping and St. Pierre was held this past March.

The tide then changed, however, as St. Pierre made it clear that he wouldn’t be ready to compete until the fall. Bisping also said that he was dealing with a knee injury, which led White to pull the plug on the bout.

St. Pierre, however, is still confident that the fight will take place:

“(The fight) was changing, but I talked to Dana a few days ago,” St-Pierre recently told TSN.ca. “I tried to convince him that it was a good thing, that if I come back it needs to be a situation where I put a lot of the risk, but I need to have something I can gain from it.

“Big risk, big reward. Fighting Michael Bisping, that’s what it gives me. … He said we’ll figure it out. We’ll see what happens.”

Not only is “Rush” confident that the fight will take place, but the Canadian star is also confident that he’ll dethrone Bisping, saying that he wants to be the one to ‘retire’ the brash Brit:

“I want to be the one that retires him,” St-Pierre said. “He’s got the most wins (in UFC history). I don’t want him to win again because he beat my record, and I’m the one that had the record before. He’s got one over me. I’m going to beat him and then win another few more. Then I’m 36, so it will be time to retire after a few more.”

In regards to the record, Bisping currently holds the record for most wins in UFC history with 20, a record previously owned by St. Pierre.

Is this a bout you’d still like to see?

Coach: GSP vs. McGregor Would Be ‘Greatest Fight In UFC History’

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre confirmed earlier this year that he would finally be making a return to the Octagon after going into a self-imposed hiatus after his highly controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in 2013.

UFC President Dana White had even announced that St. Pierre would take on middleweight champion Michael Bisping in his return bout, although White recently pulled the plug on that bout after learning that “Rush” would not be ready to fight until this coming fall.

St. Pierre’s longtime head coach Firas Zahabi, however, recently said that ‘everyone’ knew of St. Pierre’s timeline:

“I think everybody knows Georges has to go through the USADA testing,” Zahabi told MMAJunkie.com. “He has to wait to the fall until he can fight. I think it’s clear on everybody’s side – everybody knows that.”

When St. Pierre does indeed return, Zahabi feels as if only two bouts make sense for him: a title fight with Bisping or a fight with lightweight king Conor McGregor:

“I think I want Georges to fight a high-profile fight,” Zahabi admitted. “He doesn’t need any more to go and try to be champion of the welterweight division and try to defend the title every three-four months. I think he’s done that, and he’s past that. I don’t want to speak for him. I don’t know if it’s a lifestyle he wants to go back to.

“I think he should fight Conor McGregor or Michael Bisping, and I’ll tell you why: Michael Bisping will give him a two-title championship, and if he fights McGregor, it’ll be the greatest fight in UFC history.

“Other than that, I don’t know if there’s anything else that’s super-interesting. I don’t wanna speak for Georges – maybe Georges is thinking of other fights – but the two fights I’m interested in would be a Bisping fight or a McGregor fight. I don’t see why that can’t happen. Maybe it’s a question of time, but it should happen.”

Bisping recently revealed that he’s still dealing with a knee injury that will also keep him out of action until the fall, so a bout between him and St. Pierre is certainly still an option if that is the direction the UFC would like to go.

McGregor, on the other hand, is coming off of a brutal knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez last November at UFC 205 in New York City. He’s currently pursuing a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, but a bout between him and St. Pierre would pit two of the biggest stars in UFC history against each other. The “Notorious” one has competed at 170 pounds in the past, but “Rush” has also said that he could make the 155-pound limit.

While both options are lucrative, at the end of the day, Zahabi would like to see St. Pierre take on Bisping and it’s a fight he believes Bisping deserves:

“Bisping has been fighting for a long time; he deserves a big money fight,” Zahabi stated. “I think fighting Georges would make him the most money he’s ever made in his career. I think he deserves that. I think he’s a big name. I think he’s champion – he should make that money.

“And what do the fans want to see? I think Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre is the No. 1 fight they want to see. So why aren’t we giving it to them? I don’t know.”

What do you make of Zahabi’s comments?

The UFC’s middleweight division is a disaster.

Since winning the title with a shocking knockout victory over Luke Rockhold last June at UFC 199 in California, current champion Michael Bisping has only defended his strap once, scoring a decision victory over Dan Henderson in a highly criticized booking last October at UFC 204 in his hometown of Manchester, England.

Earlier this year, UFC President Dana White announced that instead of taking on top contender Yoel Romero, Bisping would next defend his title against returning former welterweight king Georges St. Pierre. St. Pierre hasn’t competed since scoring a controversial decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in 2013 and he has never competed at middleweight, although he remains a well-known name in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Recently, however, “Rush” said he wouldn’t be available to fight until next fall, leading White to call off the bout. Bisping then made things even more difficult, revealing that he was still suffering from a knee injury that would keep him on the sidelines for the coming months as well.

Because of these issues, White admitted that the promotion is considering booking an interim title bout between Romero and No. 3-ranked Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker:

“We’re trying to put together that Bisping-Romero fight,” White told ESPN.com. “If [Bisping] can’t fight this summer, we’ll probably create an interim title between Romero and Robert Whittaker.”

It’s currently unclear when a potential interim title fight would take place.

Romero is riding an incredible eight fight win streak, with six of those victories coming by way of stoppage. “The Solider of God” holds notable victories over Tim Kennedy, Lyoto Machida and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and he’s coming off of a vicious flying knee stoppage of former champion Chris Weidman.

The 26-year-old Whittaker, on the other hand, is riding a seven fight win streak of his own, with four of those victories coming by way of stoppage. “The Reaper” most recently scored an upset victory over “Jacare” at UFC on FOX 24 in Kansas City this past April.

Booking an interim title fight between these two contenders certainly makes quite a bit of sense, especially if Bisping is going to be out of action for the foreseeable future. It will also likely invigorate the disgruntled middleweight division, as numerous contenders have voiced their displeasure with not only the state of the division, but the UFC’s recent matchmaking as well.

As far as St. Pierre goes, his future is a bit a cloudy at the moment. White, however, said that the Canadian star will likely compete for the welterweight title once he makes his long awaited return to the Octagon:

“[St-Pierre] says he will fight whoever the 170-pound champion is when he comes back,” White said.

Do you still expect a bout between Bisping and St. Pierre to take place and are you content with the UFC making an interim 185-pound title?

Yoel Romero Is Done Chasing Michael Bisping

Yoel Romero is undoubtedly deserving of a 185-pound title shot. The No. 1-ranked UFC middleweight contender has won an incredible eight straight fights, with six of those victories coming by way of stoppage. Yoel Romero is undoubtedly deserving of a 185-pound title shot.

The No. 1-ranked UFC middleweight contender has won an incredible eight straight fights, with six of those victories coming by way of stoppage. The former Olympic silver medalist has scored notable wins over the likes of Tim Kennedy, Lyoto Machida, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Chris Weidman, most recently flooring Weidman with a vicious flying knee at UFC 205 last November.

After his victory at UFC 205 in New York City, Romero was all but promised a title shot against champion Michael Bisping, but he was forced to take a seat when UFC President Dana White announced this past March that Bisping would next be defending his title against returning former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

Since that announcement, little progress has been made towards making the fight official and White recently pulled the plug on the bout, saying that Bisping would fight Romero next instead. Ironically, “The Count” has now said that his knee injury is not healed and that he’ll be waiting till November for a showdown with St. Pierre.

With that being said, Romero took to his official Twitter account to announce that he’s moving past a bout with Bisping, saying that he’ll now focus his attention towards the next contender put in front of him:

As far as who he could fight next, Romero does indeed have some options. Despite his incredible win streak, he has yet to compete against the three contenders sitting behind him.

After losing his title in shocking fashion to Bisping at UFC 199 last June, No. 2-ranked former champion Luke Rockhold was scheduled to rematch Souza last November, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout after suffering a knee injury. He has recently voiced his displeasure with the UFC’s matchmaking, but if he returns to full health in the near future, a bout between him and “The Solider of God” would make quite a bit of sense.

No. 3-ranked Robert Whittaker is coming off of an upset stoppage victory over “Jacare” at UFC on FOX 24 in Kansas, City in which he established himself as a legitimate title threat in the division. The UFC could match up the 26-year-old Australian contender with Romero in what would be an exciting title eliminator bout.

Finally, No. 4-ranked former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi has recently hit his stride, scoring five consecutive victories, with four of those victories coming in impressive stoppage fashion. His most recent win, however, was a highly controversial one over Weidman at UFC 210 in Buffalo this past April. Either way, he remains a veteran of the sport and a bout between him and Romero would certainly pit two of the division’s very best against each other.

Of course, Romero should be rewarded the next 185-pound title shot if Bisping isn’t fighting St. Pierre, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the champion campaign hard for a ‘money fight’ with the Canadian star.

Who would you like to see “The Solider of God” take on next?

Earlier this year, UFC President Dana White went on SportsCenter to announce that former longtime welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre would be coming out of retirement to challenge Michael Bisping in a middleweight title bout. White, however, did not give a date or venue for the bout.

There was speculation that the fight could main event UFC 2013 on July 8, 2017 in Las Vegas during international fight week, but St. Pierre didn’t seem interested in fighting on that card. Now, “Rush” has finally shed some light on when the fight may take place, as he took to his official Instagram account earlier today, telling Bisping to pick a date after October and they will ‘get it on’:

Bisping has repeatedly said that he wouldn’t be willing to wait that long for St. Pierre so it’ll be interesting to see how he reacts to this news.

The Brit is coming off of a decision victory over Dan Henderson last October at UFC 204 in his first title defense. Prior to that, he stunned Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 last June to become the 185-pound champion.

St. Pierre, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since 2013 when he scored a highly controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167.
