No. 1-ranked UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero has won an incredible eight straight fights, with six of those victories coming by way of stoppage. “The Solider of God” was expected to face off with champion Michael Bisping next, but the UFC elected to give the title shot to returning former welterweight king Georges St. Pierre.

Romero clearly wasn’t pleased with the decision, which led him to call for an interim title bout. Bisping, however, feels as if Romero’s idea is ‘laughable’:

“You’ve got Yoel Romero calling for an interim title shot, which is just desperate,” Bisping said on his podcast “Believe You Me” this week. “It’s laughable. It’s desperate.

“Interim titles are for if the champion is hurt or injured or taking time out. None of that’s happening. GSP’s fighting for the belt. So shut up, fight someone else in the meantime or sit on the side. One or the other.”

While Bisping vs. St. Pierre certainly makes sense from a business standpoint, the bout has angered some fans and fighters. Aside from Romero, No. 3-ranked Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has also voiced his displeasure with the booking, as he even went as far to say that he hopes Bisping and St. Pierre knock each other out.

“The Count” also responded to the Brazilian:

“Well first and foremost, ‘Jacare’ come on, my friend, that’s a very, very nasty thing to say. I thought you were all about love and God and this and niceness and spreading the beauty of jiu-jitsu and all this [expletive] but yet you call for us both to get knocked out? That’s not very Christian is it?” Bisping said.

“Listen, I understand his frustration, of course. But the fact of the matter is he did lose to Yoel Romero. So he’s only won two fights since then. So he’s really got no one to be mad at but himself. He lost around a year ago so it is what it is. Yoel’s ahead of him when this fight happens.”

What do you make of the decision to give “Rush” a shot at Bisping?

After nearly three years away from the sport, former longtime welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre recently announced that he would be making his long awaited return to action and UFC President Dana White made it clear that “Rush” would be taking on reigning middleweight king Michael Bisping later this year.

While the fight will certainly be a blockbuster bout, UFC commentator Joe Rogan recently criticized the booking, saying that the fight takes away the value of a championship belt.

Bisping has since responded to Rogan’s comments, arguing that the commentator ‘contradicted’ himself:

“Listen, Joe’s a very smart man and he’s very learned on the subject of mixed martial arts and the UFC,” Bisping said on his Sirius XM podcast The Countdown“He’s been around forever. He knows the sport, but as I say, he kind of contradicted himself. He’s like, ‘why have title fights?’ but then he says, ‘I, for sure, would get the popcorn and buy this PPV.”

Continuing on, “The Count” feels as if he has earned the right to lobby for the most lucrative fights available given the years he has put into the sport of mixed martial arts:

“See, to become a champion, you have to pay your dues which I did for a long, long, long time. When you become the champion, it changes because now, it’s only a very small portion, but you get a portion of the PPV. Now every single fight you have, there’s a possibility you’re going to lose that fight, So you want to maximize the potential.

“You want the fights to be as big as possible, but in terms of credibility as well, that has to be a factor. With Georges St-Pierre coming back, I feel like I’m trying to justify a point that I’ve said a million times, but Joe actually just said there himself, he would buy the fight. He 100% would buy it, so therefore, there goes my argument.”

Those who have agreed with Rogan have criticized the booking simply because St. Pierre, a natural welterweight who hasn’t fought since UFC 167, is returning and leap frogging worthy 185-pound title contenders, most notably No. 1-ranked Yoel Romero. In regards to this idea, Bisping said that St. Pierre will serve as a ‘warm-up’ fight for Romero, who “The Count” plans to take on shortly after his bout with GSP:

“Well actually, it’s not crazy, it’s not ludicrous, it’s not beyond the realms of imagination, because Georges St-Pierre, in a lot of ways, is the perfect warm-up fight for Yoel Romero,” Bisping said about Rogan’s criticism of fighting Romero immediately after GSP. “They’ve got very similar styles. Yes, Yoel is bigger and hits harder, but they’ve both got fantastic wrestling, they’re both shorter guys than me.

“Say we fight, I don’t know when it is, say UFC 215 for argument’s sake. UFC 217, I’ll do it (fight Romero). I’ll do it because I don’t want all the work I’ve done, all the wrestling work I’ve done, I don’t want to get rusty in that regard.”

What do you make of Bisping’s response here?

Coach: GSP Is Still Top P4P Fighter In The World

After vacating his long held UFC welterweight title back in 2013 and entering a semi-retirement of sorts, Georges St. Pierre was rumored to be finally returning at last weekend’s (Dec. 10, 2016) UFC 206 from his home of Canada, but he announced in the weeks leading up to the event that negotiations with the promotion

After vacating his long held UFC welterweight title back in 2013 and entering a semi-retirement of sorts, Georges St. Pierre was rumored to be finally returning at last weekend’s (Dec. 10, 2016) UFC 206 from his home of Canada, but he announced in the weeks leading up to the event that negotiations with the promotion had stalled.

Apparently the UFC recently reopened negotiations with the former 170-pound king and St. Pierre’s team is still hoping to see “Rush” back in the Octagon. In fact, his longtime head coach Firas Zahabi recently spoke with ESPN on the topic, saying that he prefers a bout with middleweight champion Michael Bisping over a bout with welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley:

“I would love the Bisping fight to be honest with you,” Zahabi said. “I feel the welterweight division doesn’t have a supremely confident champion yet. Tyron Woodley is a great champion, but he’s on his first defense. We need someone to build a history like Georges did, to have a super fight.

“With Bisping, it would be for the middleweight title. That would make it epic. Georges needs to come back for a mega fight, super fight. Something five rounds, something historical. Not just another contender.”

No matter who the opponent may be, however, Zahabi would be confident heading in, as he still feels as if St. Pierre is the best fighter on the planet:

“I still think Georges is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world,” Zahabi said. “He trains regularly so I still see him in action and the guy is a monster. I hope Georges and the UFC, his management team at CAA, they book him again. He’s such an incredible talent sitting by the wayside. It’s crazy to me.

“I think it’s a matter of time. I’m hopeful at least.”

Have you given up hope, or do you expect to see St. Pierre return at some point?

Georges St. Pierre Confirms He Will Not Fight At UFC 206

Last week, former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre shocked the MMA world when he said that his lawyer had terminated his UFC contract, making him a free agent. This announcement all but confirmed that St. Pierre would not be making his long awaited return at Dec. 10’s UFC 206 from his home of Canada, a possibility that seemed very likely not too long ago.

A glimpse of hope once again emerged yesterday (Oct. 25, 2016), however, when middleweight champion Michael Bisping announced that he had verbally agreed to a bout with St. Pierre at UFC 206. “The Count” also urged “Rush” to ‘sign the papers’. Fight fans were excited for a moment, but UFC President Dana White quickly denied the report.

Today (Oct. 26, 2016), the nail was put in the coffin, as St. Pierre responded to Bisping with a video message. The ex-champion expressed his interest in the bout and said that he had made ‘peace’ with White after difficult negotiations, but also confirmed that he would not be fighting at UFC 206:

While it’s a shame that one of the sport’s biggest-ever stars won’t be making his comeback in the coming months, perhaps the fact that St. Pierre has made amends with White is a good sign.

Do you expect to ever see “Rush” back in the Octagon?

Reigning UFC middleweight champion Michael “The Count” Bisping recently defended his title for the very first time earlier this month at UFC 204 against Dan Henderson, but it was rumored that he could be making a quick turnaround against former longtime welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at December 10’s UFC 206 from Canada.

After three years away from the sport, St. Pierre made it clear that he was interested in making a return to the cage, but negotiations then took a downward turn as he recently said that he was a free agent, a claim that the UFC quickly disputed.

Given St. Pierre’s star power, especially in Canada, it’s likely that the promotion is still attempting to get him on the card, and Bisping is hoping for the same:

“Georges talked about fighting me a while ago and I’d love to fight the guy,” Bisping told Sport360.com. “It’d be terrific for me business-wise and I also think I’d beat the guy.”

“I’m here if you want to fight Georges, let’s go. Sign the papers, buddy, that’s all you’ve got to do.”

After his bout with Henderson, Bisping was given a 180 day medical suspension for the damage he took in that five round war, but the Brit says he has cleared his tests and is healthy and ready to compete:

“I had a CT scan after the fight and I’m all good,” he said. “There’s some misinformation going around, I don’t know where they’re all getting it, but they are incorrect. I’m good, I’m healthy. My leg is a little bruised, but a bit of ice and a few more days and I’ll be good to go.”

UFC 206 is currently set to be headlined by a light heavyweight title rematch between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson.

When recently asked who he would like to fight next, newly minted UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping expressed interest in some questionable options to say the least. “The Count” threw out two names, specifically noting ageing veteran Dan Henderson and former long-time welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

From Bisping’s view, one could see why either of these men would make sense. Henderson scored one of the best knockouts in sport history over Bisping back at UFC 100, a defeat “The Count” clearly wants to avenge, and St. Pierre is one of the biggest draws in promotional history, which in turn would give Bisping a huge fight.

However, neither option makes too much sense from a rankings standpoint. Henderson isn’t ranked inside the top 10 at middleweight, and St. Pierre has been on the sidelines since vacating his title in 2013, although he constantly hints at a potential return. In fact, the Canadian star has apparently expressed interest in fighting Bisping as well.

One man who isn’t happy with these options being discussed is former 185-pound champion Chris Weidman. Weidman was slated to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title at UFC 199, but was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury, leading Bisping to step up and knock out Rockhold.

Weidman is hoping to receive the next crack at the title, and has blasted Bisping in the media for looking beyond the division’s highest ranked fighters. The ex-champion doesn’t blame St. Pierre, however, as he recently said that GSP is likely looking for an ‘easy’ fight and a belt:

“If it’s true, they see an easy fight, why not go for it and get a belt at the same time? Who wouldn’t want that? I mean, poor Bisping but can you pick one guy in the top 15 that you are sure he can beat? There are definitely guys he can beat but that you would say for sure he would beat? Who is he gonna be a favorite against? Maybe a small favorite [against Henderson].” Weidman said at a Q&A in Canada.

The bad blood definitely seems to be growing between Weidman and Bisping, but who would you realistically like to see “The Count” clash with next?
